Realistic self defense is very different to professional fighting where there are rules and regulations. On the street it is a potential life or death situation, every time! And so one must avoid fighting but if its unavoidable you must do what it takes to safely get away - in one piece. That may mean doing things that would be illegal in professional fighting.
Wing Chun is a system developed exactly for that, Real/Street fighting and its most fundamental principles would mean that you would get disqualified if you used it in the ring or the octagon.
But having said that, it is extremely crucial to practice live sparring and/or try to replicate a realistic situation in your training so to bring out the fear and adrenaline dump in yourself and learn how to operate mindfully and in a relaxed fashion under these types of pressure. One can not expect to just practice forms and preempted techniques and be able to apply them on the street. you MUST pressure test everything!!

I’m the same. No guard in a fight. Be alert, but you don’t need to show your intentions. When you attack it will comes from anywhere and directly at a target. And don’t stop until you know it’s enough. Street fights are over in a few seconds. Not 2 minutes in a ring with an audience and reward if you win . Good lesson Sifu King ❤. Sifu Spence is spot on 👍🏻🙏

Something I have found useful is to practice using a loose guard in everyday life. I have a bunch of mannerisms, like scratching my elbow or clasping my hands together, that I practise when I pass people coming towards men on the street. I have not been in a situation that required it, but a couple of times someone has approached me asking for 'bus money' and I automatically have my hands in front of me, which is reassuring.

That's a good way to get into the habit of always being guarded. Good stuff 👌🏼👏🏼

Awesome tips for self - defence, definitely need more realistic self defence scenario practice in classes. People just get stuck in drills and sparring but nothing compared to Street Fighting. Thanks for Sharing!

Your mental teaching about Wing Chun is extremly useful. This kind of videos of yours pushed me to buy your udemy study set in first place. I just want to say that, in order to understand the mentality of Wing Chun (atleast Mindful Wing Chun's perspective) do not hesitate to follow them. They can lead you some different ideas which you cannot find easly. And thank you for your sharing those kind of knowledge with us.

The controlling of the distance in a deceptive manner with your hands without being in an on guard position, is known here in the UK as "the fence." Geoff Thompson who was a bouncer & who is a very well respected reality based martial artist is probably the most well known person for making this technique popular. He has written a book called "The Fence" which you can download off of epdf.pub & you can find his instructional videos on "The Fence" on KZbin & I highly recommend his book "Watch My Back."

Yeah it's a very important aspect of any Martial art (if people are doing it to learn how to fight). Some people are doing some kinds of Kung Fu for health reasons - like the elderly doing Tai Chi in parks - so ofcourse they dont need to do sparring. But unfortunately sometimes people think they can fight without sparring and if they ever get into a proper fight they find out the hard way that infact they cant use any of their practices techniques once under an adrenaline dump...

Sorry, but as a traditional wing chun guy, you really want to be in close combat range. That range is the most advantageous for us. It stops any further attack from a strike, kick or take down. And yes, you do want to keep your hands up in the middle to protect both sides. Having your hands up allows you to intercept the attack before it even comes close to our face. That is one of the MAJOR flaws in boxing, is that they keep their hands on the sides of their head, which doesn't give them much time to respond to an attack. It also pulls the hand away from that side, leaving an opening we can step into and exploit! Now, if they DO, by chance, catch the attack (which is rare, if you do it properly), then you can step into the now-open area where the hand once was and attack again, SUCCESSFULLY! This is because it is very difficult to bring the hand back in time, since it is too far away from the point of attack. I know that in WSL's system you guys use more sensitivity because you lack the proper footwork (the circle inside the triangle), angled step to the outside of the attacking arm and a body rotation towards the attack to see and stop it. It also pulls you away from the attack, making it easier to enter in safely once contact is made. They also go past center when punching or blocking, and overcommit their response. This means they have to finish the strike first, pull the hand back, reset the stance, THEN do another strike. In wing chun, we NEVER overcommit, so we can, in the RARE case we miss the strike, can change direction in mid stream (change a punch to a palm strike, for example), and continue on to the target. Remember, the further away your hands are from the center, the less likely you are to stop the attack.

Thanks for sharing. Yeah I dont know too much about the WSL lineage but I think you're right that they do use more footwork than others... Wong Chun Leung himself was an amazing fighter. I know this not only from what his students and Chu Shong Tin told me but also from many other elders i that I have met in gatherings over the years here in Hong Kong, even those that didn't really like him (I could tell by the way they talked about him) respected his fighting ability.

When the video starts from "first things... , I know Sifu Nima King will explain alot. Thanks for the insights. I think when we do self defense in street fight, internal wing chun will be the system because every punches and kicks are natural (not just a form like movies style). Cmiiw

@@Gieszkanne He has his own skill sets that's for sure and I really enjoyed our time together. That stuff doesn't have that kind of effect on people that can open their joints the way we do. I haven't met anyone else in other methods that are doing what we do in CST Wing Chun, but am searching and hope to one day meet someone that can. The closest person who has the most similarities with what I do is probably DKYoo but he's is also still different.

Yeah, guard your head and don't fall over, hand position and stance, KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid. Glad to see you realise duelling and self-defence are two totally different things, too many people confuse the two.
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 2 жыл бұрын
'Keep it simple Stupid' - I like it :) And yeah unfortunately many ppl think combative sports are the same as self defense AND on the other flip side of the cone, many 'traditional' martial arts practitioners don't do any real sparring or dynamic pressure testing because they hide behind the fact that they dont need to put on gloves and throw proper blows to each other.
