As Close to Crime

2 жыл бұрын

Famed FBI profiler John Douglas interviews two men who opted to plead guilty rather than face the death penalty.
- Joseph Kondro, a man who raped then murdered two young girls, Rima Traxler and Kara Rudd. These children were known to him - Kondro was a friend of the families.
On screen interviews include Danelle Kinne (Rima's mother), Courtney Kondro (Joseph Kondro's daughter) and Susan Bauer (Cowlitz County prosecuting attorney).
Sgt. Steve Rehaume (from the Longview, Washington Police Dept. is seen in archival news footage).
- Donald Harvey, a hospital orderly who, by his own estimation, killed as many as 70 people during his 17 years of employment at 3 different hospitals.
Harvey's lawyer, Wiliam Whalen, is also interviewed.

I agree completely!!! (Oldheads here)... We were raised by survivors of WW2.. "success success success" (the only way north America will have any sliver of chance to include ... Anyone different from 'the norm'/'well to do'/'good family's... So I grew a fire in my belly and fought for equal opportunities from childhood to mid 30s... When I had the REVELATION that... Life sucks... For ANY/EVERY BEING under the sun- ESPECIALLY the working poor/poor... Let alone homeless.... That gave me the permission to live. Now I have utmost respect for homeless, poor, working poor, (and even what's left of the working-middle/ even middle-upper income people)... Who not just keep living... Some manage to even remain kind/good/loving people!!! If we even make it to old age in this CRAZYMAKING world - THAT'S the miracle in itself... All that 'monumental success' and 'change the WORLD' 'make sure to leave the world better a better place than you found it's... All the while being POOR and from a poor-working poor family/zero nepotism to be had... Miraculous. All that social responsibility can fall on the shoulders of those who can afford the time, resources, and energy...

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Japanese-American, too. I first learned about John Douglas, when he helped try to profile The Green River Killer, before we knew it was Gary Ridgway. Portland used to be my favorite vacation spot. I've been through Longview many times going to and from the coast. I've stopped in neighboring Kelso many times, for fast food, gas, and bathroom stops at the Red Lion Inn. So, this story really hits close to home for me. Rima Traxler was such a beautiful girl! When they made the age progression picture, it showed how she would have been such a beautiful woman. What's scary about Joe Kondro, is that he was soft-spoken and WELL-spoken. That's what made it easy for him to win the trust of his victims. I don't wish death upon many, but I am not sad to see Joe Kondro deceased, because he was such a danger to society.

I’m a security guard at a hospital. I agree with Harvey that it is the hospital’s responsibility (or the security company) to make sure that patients are safe from a potential threat. He definitely should not of been allowed back in that patients room after the attack, and that patient should have had charges brought against him. Does that justify Harvey’s actions, of course not. But I don’t think he was being narcissistic and blaming the hospital for his actions, he was simply stating they shouldn’t have let him back in the room. Which is true.

@@ardenalexa94 The FBI's profile of the then-unknown Unabomber said that he was more than likely a working class man, perhaps an airplane mechanic. In reality, he was a former child prodigy who graduated high school at 16, earned a BA in math at Harvard and a PhD from the University of Michigan. It's likely they would never have caught him if his own brother hadn't ratted him out. This is just ONE example of profilers getting it wrong.

It's a good thing those who hunted these monsters down to get some more attention with the internet. I think we don't stop to think enough about what these detectives have to go through to solve a case. My sister was brutally murdered by her husband and the cops who arrived at the scene had to go into therapy afterwards. In our town these things don't happen too often, luckily. With individuals suffering a cluster b disorder, control and some type of validation is their life blood. My sister's husband was a psychopathic narcissist. I was abused myself. These disorders are so complex it's almost a miracle researchers understand them without having to have gone through abuse themselves. Thanks for sharing this documentary, it's really good !

@@DuffMan. I've found over the years, having studied the worst of the worst, there are times when ill put a book down for weeks I'm an avid reader but some if the depraved shit some do to others takes a toll on your mind. You can learn a lot about preditorial behavior, what to watch for etc but sometimes its a stiff price to pay when you have a conscience and empathy for others. On one hand you want to learn, to help society prevent the nurturing of these guys, then there's other times you get so mad you don't give a shit about their reasons and just wanna throw em in the electric chair and pull the switch yourself. The way I've found to balance these things is by believing in God and everlasting life. If people are reunited with their loved ones for all eternity then it takes the sting out of the wound. Not completely but you can rest assured nobody is getting away with anything when God deals with them. Thats just how keep going when a new heinous act is discovered.Take care God Bless the victims, their family and friends and a special blessing to the men and women who HUNT these guys for a living as I could only view small amounts with a good deal of time in-between.

I get that killing is wrong and people who killed are horrible but certain killers I just don't regard as horrible as other people do. Like the son of Sam yeah, he intentionally went after couples, but even after adults with a gun, real simple, quick action, I guess just a sign of a bit of depraved mind versus a completely sadistic fucked up my mind like others, who take pleasure in watching their victims suffering.

I can stomach the evil people in this world, but I've gotta bow outta this documentary as it starts with some reptile killing kids. Too much.. just want to say, GOD BLESS the victims, their family's and the men and women who CAN soldier through this kind of sickness and apprehend or kill the people who do this type of criminality....W.E.T.

There's nothing to learn from these guys. There's no explanation at the end of the bottomless dark pit that is their soul that explains why they do this. None that would make any sense to a sane person, anyway. They're monsters and that really is all there is to know about them.

When somebody is found "beyond a shadow of a doubt to have killed," and killed often, why aren't they given the death penalty?? I don't understand this, it not like there could possibly be a mistake and that they didn't kill. Keeping people like that alive is not really fair justice to the victims, or the victims families?? is it?? I guess they are kept alive so that they can be researched! Your tax dollars going to work, the only explanation I understand.

The only thing i've learned watching John Douglas and profilers is that they provide very minimal help if any. Every serial killer is different but share a few similar traits i.e some trauma in childhood, outcast, animal cruelty, substance issues,, how does this help actually catch anyone?

People commenting "it is interesting" as if it's some lab experiment with a dead rat. Real children lost their lives and all people has to say is this is interesting. Lack of sympathy is not exclusive to serial killers at all.
@chaos4316

I don’t think the people saying that are deliberately trying to sound heartless. There are so many different facets of law enforcement where they’d use language like ‘interesting’. I get how it sounds, and so did this network which is why it never went past the pilot. But it is interesting to those of us actively engaged in hunting these people. John Douglas would love to rip this guy in 1/2. But he’s not going to learn anything about this killers signature, where that gets turned into data, and crime scenes fall into that equation. “What kind of murder is this?” Data compiled from endless interviews with these sick bastards can help assess the next murder and it’s characteristics. This is interesting, because it hopefully leads to the interception and arrest of such monsters before they can amass more victims. To the average civilian, methodologies and vernacular around victims can sound really cold. Because when we investigate, doing your best not to become emotionally attached (until it’s over at least) is important. The approach is systematic to achieve consistency interpreting victimology. It’s very hard to do this. A lot find out the hard way that they can’t and move on. I don’t know if I’m explaining myself well, I guess my point is… to people who work these awful jobs, things can be both interesting, and unbelievably heartbreaking at the same time. Douglas is actually ‘grooming’ this guy. With his calm demeanour and none judgemental tone - he’s winning their trust, and extracting vital information.

@@IwasBlueb4 so do the FEDS probably tapping into people's cells. All their money no jobs for these people on the streets in the cities. Give'em jobs especially the veterans, pretty sick how this financially rich takes care of its own. Have them(homeless) build a place for themselves to shelter from the elements, crime rates will drop and stop allowing people to go hungry. We look out for each other here in this small remote town in Alaska NOBODY GOES HUNGRY and people will always have a place to stay.
