Entirely by coincidence, I came across this speech in the last scene of the film "Bobby" on the very same day that five policeman were killed in Dallas in response to yet more killings of black men by police. Josh Charlie I agree my friend.. Far too often indeed. Whenever I learn of another report of some senseless needless mindless violence that has occurred somewhere in this world, the words Robert speaks here always come into my mind as well (& w/ seemingly increasing regularity lately too).. And sadly it sometimes feels as though the message he's sharing in this brief yet powerful speech has only grown more & more relevant over the time since he spoke them in 1968, (& even in the last 3 years since I 1st posted this video). - Tragically so. :/ And I'll tell ya, for as much as I adore RFK, & enjoy hearing the beautifully poignant, undaunted & courageous, elegant & enlightened, honest & inspired, words of wisdom which he stood up, spoke out, & shared w/ us during his time here.. I would honestly rather the world become a place where those words & their messages simply held no real relevance to/in society, a world where the next generation would find them strange nonsensical & out-of-place, & where there was never reason for them to come to mind again.

This speech makes me weep, it is so soulful and honest. Knowing the background and the history, and what was to come, makes it moreso. I came here after reading the NYT OpEd piece about Mitt Romney who was the only republican to vote against the sitting president, and how behind the scenes so many republican senators were too afraid to publicly oppose him. There was a quote of RFK and it said that, ""moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle." In these troubling times, more than ever we need the voice of reason that can heal us all.

“Yet we seemingly tolerate a rising level of violence that ignores our common humanity and our claims to civilization alike…. We make it easy for men of all shades of sanity to acquire weapons and ammunition they desire. Too often we honor swagger and bluster and the wielders of force; too often we excuse those who are willing to build their own lives on the shattered dreams of others…. Our lives on this planet are too short and the work to be done too great to let this spirit flourish any longer in our land. Of course we cannot vanish it with a program, nor with a resolution. But we can perhaps remember - even if only for a time - that those who live with us are our brothers, that they share with us the same short movement of life, that they seek - as we do - nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and happiness, winning what satisfaction and fulfillment they can. Surely this bond of common faith, this bond of common goal, can begin to teach us something. Surely we can learn, at least, to look at those around us as fellow men and surely we can begin to work a little harder to bind up the wounds among us and to become in our hearts brothers and countrymen once again.”

The hidden costs of ignoring the connection between what we do and how others are affected by it, near and far, is one of the most fertile grounds for the seeds of evil. To successfully win the war against evil, we must remember we fight against institutions, concepts and ideas which cannot bleed. Why do we draw the blood of our neighbors in the “name of peace?” Because our true enemies are invisible to us as we focus on our neighbor’s weaknesses. Our true enemy is the fear of loving thy neighbor as thy self, globally. The message in this speech lives on.
