Just did my first ever water color pencil with your inspiration - i chose a tufted titmouse one of my favorites from way back home in PA. I'm enjoying all of your videos, they are some of the best for VERY new beginners, you walk through everything in such an easy to follow, calm and intellectual way. THANK YOU!

You r correct- there is very little difference between black-capped & Carolina chickadees. Where u saw the bird helps a lot but in the East, there is a crossover from North to South. Here in CA we don’t have Carolina but have chestnut-backed & black-capped. I have Fabre-Castell Aqua Karell watercolor pencils I’ve been using 59 yrs (on 2d Set). Don’t like waterbrushes so use regular watercolor paint brushes so I can control the amount of fluid. I’m working on an art journal with my photography of birds I’ve seen in all 50 states. I’ve seen almost 500 species of birds in USA.

I am a Canadian who moved to Mexico just over four years ago now and one of the things I miss are the Black Capped Chickadees. They have always been my favourite little bird. Can't wait to move back home to all the things I have been missing. Thank you for bringing back such fond memories. I have just recently found you channel and am anxious to learn all that I can. Bless you for sharing your talent and time.

Hi Steve ...lovely watching you paint and I am learning a lot about shading and using a delicate touch. I shave the wood down the pencil barrel for about 1.5 inches to expose the colour and it makes it easy to pool directly with a wet brush lift enough pigment for a wash. Of course the trade off is you loose the ability to have a sharp point but I hold several in my hand at once mixing as I go. Also my style is more serendipitous .......Lynette

I'm learning how to use watercolor pencils and having a rough time of it but that might be because I haven't found the right paper to use with the pencil. I did a landscape, in a watercolor journal, and it wasn't great as I couldn't get color up very well once it was applied. And I couldn't move color around very well. I'll just have to keep working with it to find which technique works the best for my style of painting.

Great bird! I here what your saying about how the watercolor pencils sets in. I have fun with the WC pencils and water pens because of the fact you can control the water better. The WC pencils help to get the fine lines that I want but they are a lite value when you add the water. I noticed with the black you can't get the darkest value but they do have the water soluble grafite now and I want to try one of those pencils. Beautiful painting. Thank you for the demo and keep them coming.

I use watercolor pencils 2 ways. First, I use it as a secondary process when doing a large painting. I first do a value sketch for tonal value, then I do a watercolor pencil sketch to test the color scheme before going onto the full-sized painting. The second way I use them is for small paintings and cards. I will sometimes do a 5 - 7 with them, put them into an oval matt, and an inexpensive frame.

First off, that is gorgeous. I haven't done much with watercolor pencils but I do have some neocolor IIs and I often scribble on a slick surface (palette, glass, etc...) and pick up the color from there. It helps me from accidentally leaving any marks on textured paper that I may not want in that area. (You can also mix colors that way too if you have a limited palette and do not want to layer on the paper.) You didn't seem to have that problem at all! You must have a light touch.

Hi Steve, I love to watch your videos, you do such detail and I love that. I am trying to learn watercolor and it seems that I have a heavy hand with it. Problem!! It is sometimes come two dark and not bright enough like it should be. I am original with oils. I don't know it that could be part of my problem or not. I am not sure. It is not always but in some of my stuff. Any remedy?? I love the look of the watercolors and am striving to do it more transparent. If you have any ideas I open to suggestions lol. I know watercolor is opposite from the way you do an oil painting I don't know if this is part of my problem. Frustrated!!! Thanks your work is just beautiful. I do admire it. You have an attention to detail and realism which I love. My dad painted oils and that's why I started in it as a young girl. But it is messy and hard to clean up after so I have tried other mediums in the process.I loved my fathers work and wish he was here to enjoy the art world with. Do you know The Marboro man that used to be on the Television guides in the back of the book? Well in my office, I have a painting of him that my father did. He is holding a cup of coffee with work glove on and it is so beautiful with the glove felt and his hat in felt looking cowboy hat. Vivid color also. The painting is huge. So real you could feel the softness. I love it. Well I won't keep you. I know it is a long comment. Thank you for you help with these videos They help a lot.
@mindofwatercolor5 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to say without watching you paint. In general it's usually due to not leaving your highlights open by using less pigment. Watercolor won't cover and it just gets darker the more you add. It just takes getting used to.
@candytrippiedi14065 жыл бұрын
No not the highlights so much just some times the paints are too dark or heavy I do know to save the highlights, just not transparent enough I guess. Sometimes I do okay and sometimes not so much. Sometimes they look dingy not bright enough. Thanks for answering me. I wish I could let you see what I mean
