I recently started going to the gym as a 16 year old teenage girl. The first time I went by myself was SO intimadatiing but it turns out every one in the gym just minds their business and is very respectful and polite. I think it sometimes comes from a place of insecurity and the fear of being judged by others. But it's not the case at all !!

I have spent the last 10 years feeling horrible and never taking care of myself. Then late last year I found your podcasts, programs, and have focused on my health and wellness. you guys really explain the root of the problem as to why people have the challenges they have with their fitness journey. I remember after starting listening to you guys it was so much easier to excel in my fitness journey. Also just easier to explain to family and friends how they could start their fitness journey, and STAY there, without using confusing words and terms that they don't understand. Love what you do! 👏👏👏

Thank you for this insight! It's definitely hard to ask for help. Just a couple weeks ago I got stuck on a machine and couldn't freaking figure out how to get it to lock so I could get out 😂 I was mortified but the nice lady that helped me figure it out was just happy to help. I think when we're trying something new we think more people are looking at us, when really they aren't. Even though I was super embarrassed at the gym, literally no one else cared. It really is the most encouraging environment ❤

This is all so true. I remember years ago walking into the gym people are looking at you and judging you. Makes you want to stop going until yes I agree bringing a friend. Since the pandemic my husband and I have been fortunate to purchase gym equipment little by little. We have Anabolic, Aesthetic, and the 15 min program. Love each one and looking forward to continue our fitness journey.

The way you worded it is definitely right. If you go in with the mindset that you will be bad, you'll have a better time. I remember the first time that I went into a gym, I wasn't nervous, I just didn't know what to do. I already knew that I was going to be bad at it and I accepted it. I was 13 with two older brothers who were way stronger than me, as a default I just expected to be bad at everything I did for the first while of me doing it. I asked the guy who owned the gym (very small gym in a small town) and he just straight up gave me a workout program and showed me how to perform the exercises after I explained my goals. I went to that gym until I graduated and ended up getting my parents for a while too.

I'm 43 and last time I was in the gym was 2001. I am still feeling self-conscious which made me procrastinate about going. Sal made a comment in another vid (and he repeated here) to look at working out as a skill to practice and improve on. That has been a revelation. I still don't want to go and I still feel self conscious, but the reframing as an improvement strategy has really helped me with consistency. Thanks!

I used to play college football and was pretty dang strong…but since college I bloated up to 320 lbs and lost a ton of the strength and mobility I had. The hardest thing over the last year since I started getting back in the gym has been the fear. Fear of judgment from others and the fear of not being able to lift and move the way I used to even 5 or 6 years ago. But I’ve been trying to push through it and I’ve lost 40lbs in about 6 months and regained a good amount of strength back. The only judgement I’ve felt has honestly come from myself and I’m now finally accepting that I’m just not as strong as I used to be. @MindPumpShow has really helped push me forwards through this time so thanks for that. I’ve got a ways to go yet but I know I can get there. A topic I’d be interested in you guys discussing would be for people like me; the people who used to be really fit and are struggling to get back into it again. Things like training tips as well as a dive into the mental side of that.

I used to have a personal trainer and i received amazing results in a year But after 2 1/2 years doing great by myself! But i had relatives come from out of town and I could hear my dad's voice saying I need to spend time with them and not worry about what i eat. So I got too into my head and since then it's been really hard to get back into working out. Just signed up again for the gym about 3 weeks ago and I've only gone once. It's tough working 10 hrs full time single mom of 3 and I'm just so tired to go in or i psych myself out to go in. I love you guys, you provided great amazing content!

The gym intimidation took years for me to overcome. I joined a gym when I was 17yo in 1997 and for months I would only do group aerobics classes. Even the treadmill took me a long time to get up the courage to try, I wasn’t a runner and thought just walking on a treadmill would look dumb. I never had the funds to hire a trainer and they intimidated me too to be honest. Through the years I’d quit and restart the gym several times, never getting over my fear of the free weight area because I never saw women touching the dumbbells and barbells. Mind Pump was instrumental in making me realize why I should be focusing on strength training. KZbin was where I studied how to set up a squat, bench press, etc. I watched countless videos on technique, form cues, dos and don’ts and it gave me the courage to start really lifting. Thanks guys!

I was definitely nervous when I got my first gym membership and I knew nothing about form and technique. If I didn't have a friend that was also a novice, i might not have ever joined a gym. We fed off each other and together we built up our confidence not only to join the gym, but to continue training when we knew we didn't know what we were doing. Not once did anyone pass negative energy our way and we learned really quick this was a place we wanted to be.

Killer Episode! Thanks! My first day at the gym back in November, I went to the biggest jacked guy that was there and I was totally scared of him. I said to him: "excuse me, I'm trying to find where I can do cable tricept extensions" He ended up being coolest guy ever. Showed me how to set up the cable machine and work it. Once he did that. This other gal who was a vet at the place helped correct my form. Was so bad ass of them. One tip I've learned to get help is to compliment someone on their technique. This will alert them that you care about what they are doing and you want to improve too. This seems to be way more affective than complimenting their physique. Keep up the great work guys!

I'm changing the narrative for myself... my experience was not normal. I went from lifting at the Y when I was teen, to the military where negative reinforcement was the rule. I guess you get called a fat body enough, work out in low oxygen environments, and get fed crap food you end up with a poor outcome. Fast forward to today... I've been lifting consistently for a year 1/2 and just focusing on getting strong and being kind to myself. Your long form discussions have given me a lot of peace of mind. Keep up the great work gents.

My first gym was a PF, the most intimidating thing was actually breaking from the machines into the free weights (dumbbells and smith machines). The intimidation coming from not wanting to clang weights or be seen as a try-hard. Looking back, that fear really set me back by years. I’m only just now breaking into actual strength training with a purpose.

So I put a plate on that barbell and Instantly failed before I knew it the barbell was at my neck. Thank god a couple of people helped me out and instantly taught me a couple things. Right there and then I figured out how welcoming a gym can be. All this was after weight training in high school sports and being part of sports since 5years old.

It's super legit. That's why my garage is decked out. I hate people and gyms. I realize it's all in my head, but the garage gym is my solution. That being said, through training your programs for the last six months in the garage, I feel more confident and have considered joining a gym to use part time. So I think a garage gym is a good place to figure out your form without being around others and gain strength and confidence to feel comfortable to walk into a gym. Again, I realize these are personal issues, but it helped me.

I dont even use the squat rack and never have...because it still intimidates me. I have been on and off the gym for a couple decades too. I will still watch what other people are doing to see if I can get pointers by watching. A noob might look at me and think this guy knows what he is doing....nope, I know enough to grow muscle but barely more than a complete gym noob. Me, like anybody else in the gym, are not looking at noobs and thinking...why is he here...look at him...he dont know anything...I promise you, nobody is thinking that, if anything, they are like....hell yeah, another guy or kid starting his journey.

I remember my first time going to a gym. Went to a small old school gym where you didn’t have time to mess around.

First of all you don't need to be fit to go the gym. I was maybe the exception that didn't need to go the gym to get fit, as I was already fit from cycling for years doing races plus having a manual job. So I was already active. I had decided I was going to enter the stelvio santini. So I wanted to be in the best shape ever so I got a coach. The first thing he did was put us on a strength and conditioning program and took us to the gym to go over the exercises that was going to benefit the cycling performance. The first thing I got told was focus on form and full range of movement and don't worry about the weight no one cares what you can lift. The weight room can definitely be intimidating, or at least I found it to be. The things that help is going regularly, don't be a dick be pleasant and put things back and people are fine. I did have someone show us and go over the squats and dead lift. I had watched KZbin clips but still wasn't sure where with someone going over and giving cues of what to do and where to feel the balance I felt gave me confidence. Before going have your goals written out and what you want to achieve. If the goal is I want to get fit , then that's not a goal it needs to be more specific, you're going to get fit. The goal can be lit a certain weight do an event etc. Every year I think of a key event plus another that I'm focused on hitting peak fitness for. It then keeps the drive going to train. So this year I've got leige bastogne liege challenge. The etape du tour. Try to qualify for the Grandfondo World championship and if I make qualification. Then the world Grandfondo champs. So have to be in the top 25,% for my age group. I'm not going to win but the fact of qualifying and taking part on local roads with a home crowd is a win

All great advice once again. Sometimes you just have to get that "screw what everyone thinks of me" thought in your head and just go at it! Don't nlbe afraid to ask questions. There's always someone in the gym willing to help out, specially those that really want the help. By the way, how's the MAPS Calisthenics program coming along? 😀
