Loved this episode! Routine is everything. Monday through Friday I am at the gym at 4am for an hour, do a 20 minute walk after and then get ready for my day. THIS keeps me focused and disciplined. I feel so off if I miss a part of my routine.

Having the energy to do a little more around the house instead of feeling completely gassed when ya get home. That alone improves a person’s quality of life and is worth the effort.

The story of woman who noted sleeping better after getting back to strength. That is by far one of the biggest highlights for me. I have trouble with sleep and anxiety if I'm off track with my training. And I also do better at cleaning up around the house when I'm on point at the gym. Weight loss is a bonus, not the first focus. You boys are OUTSTANDING for your guidance.

So glad for reminders like this episode to focus on the improvements everywhere. I suffered with Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciaitis for years. I could barely do stairs anymore.... I just turned 40! Started focusing on fitness and strength training last year. And I forgot how much I used to hurt. I don't have any pain anymore. It's amazing. Thank you for all you guys do!

This video saved me from quitting the gym. Today my membership is due, it’s my third month. I have not seen any muscle growth or weight loss although I have been going consistently for 2 hours everyday following my trainers instructions. But I completely had forgotten all the benefits I have gotten out of it. After my shoulder injury it has been 3 years since I was able to do any bench lifts. Yesterday I was able to finally do incline bench and I smiled so hard, it was such an empowering moment because I thought I would never be able to do it again. My sleep is better and I get this rush of motivation every time I get out of there. I enjoy listening to my music and seeing everyone at the gym crushing it and going after their own goals every day. I am so renewing my membership today. These added benefits make it so worth it to make this a daily habit for life. I am 38 so I wish I had started this journey when my testosterone was at it’s peak for muscle growth . But honestly the vanity metric is just one of the benefits this brings to my daily life. Thank you so much for making this video, it makes a huge difference in my mindset.

I'm 55 and have been lifting for more than 10 years straight, I recently cut my volume down from 5 sets on some exercises and 3 sets on others to 2 sets and instead of full body, like I've done for most of my lifting journey, I split up the body 3 days a week also. I'm still making gains. I'm experiencing the same thing as well, Sal

Have always worked toward weight loss my whole life…. I just turned 60 and have decided I want to be strong.. so I can enjoy my granddaughter and be there for her as she grows up. Way stronger motivation than weight loss. Ordered MAPS Starter a month ago and now starting Phase 2. So crazy that with this new mindset I don’t even consider skipping my workout!! Thank you!!!

The best metric for me is being able to get down and up with my 2 and 4 year old. At 47 I can pick them both up with ease all day long. I was getting down because I’m not lifting a lot of weight but who cares I’m a better engaged and more present dad with a healthy flexible body for my boys.

Your content is so helpful to me. I'm 54 and trying to lose the final 20 to 30 pounds, and several inches off my body. I got your book on the Resistance Revolution, and now I am doing full body lifting sessions 3x a week, just completed my first 3-week cycle, and just switched to heavier weights and lower reps (1 - 5) and I did that based on all you guys talking about rep ranges and how varying them keeps the body adapting, and I do a 4-count eccentric on a lot of moves. I'm healing a sprained back, so my dead lifts are light, 20# for 12 reps and 3 rounds the first 3-week cycle, and now I'm doing 10/side for 3 rounds of single leg, because the back rehab program is teaching me the proper muscles to use and body mechanics, but I'm hoping to get those higher over the next couple of months. This cycle that I'm in for the next three weeks I am adding a 4th day of resistance training with just bands to work on the proper body mechanics, and I'm going to load my Olympic bar with 60# and unrack it on my squat rack and just stand there with it, as you guys suggested in one of your podcasts, and just let my CNS feel it, but on my lifting days I do just the bar at 45# for 5 reps/3 rounds. I listen to you guys daily, digging into your content over the last several years, and it is revolutionizing my relationship with exercise. I love my workouts, whether it's my lifting days (which I track and have a spreadsheet on) and my rehab days, where I work on healing my back and retraining my deep core muscles, but also where I incorporate the priming exercises as I find instability issues and work to strengthen them. The 90/90, combat stretch, and lizard are my current favorites, plus the shoulder mobilization. And that ELDOA stretch you taught for L5/S1 is amazing. That's where my back is injured, and I have spondylolisthesis there, so I'm healing that and stabilzing/strengthening that and you guys are aligned with my back rehab program, which is helping me move forward quickly and safely. Thank you so much!

If i to to the gym, im going to eat better to take advantage of the time i spent and nurish my body. When i eat better i have more energy, when i habe more energy i can accomplish more, eo on and so on. The gym is basically my foundation for the rest of my life to fall and maintain itself in place.

I got lucky with my clients... They started with the goal to lose weight... Now it's all about getting stronger. In fact I celebrate for them. I say something along the lines of "ohhhhh am I seeing some bicep definition?! Girlll look at you! If you haven't noticed it, I'm here to notice it for you and celebrate." They then get more motivated to lift more/heavier.

I changed my diet about a month ago, have been going to the gym religiously for about three weeks now including 30 minutes of sauna daily. I have yet to lose a pound on the scale and I started to get really discouraged. And I am saying major life change, I went from eating out virtually every meal to eating 100% clean. I'm basically grass fed everything, zero processed foods and I'm locked in. Right before I clicked on this video I took my shirt off and looked in the mirror and there is a difference. I may not be "lighter" but my phisyque is changing. My gut is shrinking and my shape is improving. It gave me a shot of motivation and I'm excited to keep going. Kinda weird that this video hit my feed right after that moment. Anyways, the scale means almost nothing. I think I'm just going to stop weighing myself all together. When I started I wanted to go from 230 to 190. I haven't been 190 since highschool (i'm 45). I just picked a number, I have no Idea what fit me should even weigh. Anyways, thatnks for all the info you guys give here, it has really helped me navigate this world by myself.

I bought a ZozoFit suit to take measurements of my body and took measurements every Sunday for 3 months. I literal lost 3 inches from my belly and waist and arms and legs got bigger. I'm a new trainer and this week and changing her mindset in looking more towards the way she feels and moves better vs what it looks like on the scale. She was worried for our monthly progress check and even before we checked measurements I knew there was progress being able to reassure her because she wears a fanny pack and it was tipping falling off because she had not adjusted for the waist inches shrinking when I pointed it out I think she made the connection that the scale means less

Appreciate the insightful discussion on exercise and the full scope of benefits in our lives. As someone who was obese for 20 of my 54 years, this hits home. I've never stayed with weight lifting in particular as I've always pushed too hard with the wrong expectations and burned out/injured myself. I happen to love steady state cardio, but it is really more that I love being outdoors so running, hiking and biking are things I can enjoy outside for several hours at a time (raising kids was wonderful, but being an empty nester has it's benefits). After breaking my left hand, I'm back into weight training and thanks to Mind Pump and a couple others, doing so in a much healthier and sustainable way, but certainly have room for program improvement. ? Looking for general/functional strength to carry me through my 50's and beyond that also supports my endurance events and moderate athleticism. I have adjustable bench, adj. dumbbells (Powerblock up to 90lbs), pull up bar, suspension trainer, bands, and sandbags (love for front loaded squat). I run 35-50 miles per week (4 runs per week) as I'm gearing up for a 50k (31 mile) trail ultra at the end of September, marathon in January and culminating the running season with a goal of 50 mile ultra in April (just trying to finish strong, not win anything or be "fast" here :-). I'm currently running a upper/lower split Mon/Tue, Thu/Fri with each session during my lunch hour (garage gym) and it has been awesome for the last 5 weeks (12 weeks circuit style before this phase). As a newbie, I'm definitely seeing muscle gains and my son, who was a trainer for several years, mentioned he could see a pretty significant change in my upper body musculature and posture last week while swimming with my grandsons. While improving steadily, I definitely have tighter hips, back and poor dorsiflexion, but have seen improvement (weighted front squats are approx. 90 degrees, but nowhere near ATG except on a slant board). I realize all the running will limit muscle mass gains, but that is fine and the ongoing practice of strength movements and increased flexibility leave me a lot of room for other types of improvement for a fair amount of time.

I am 51. When I hit my highest bench, Squat and Deadlift I was 46. Then I hurt my left shoulder after surgery 2 years earlier because of a crappy spotter. At that point I took a year to rehab everything with no real heavy lifting. Then Covid hit and although I have a killer home gym, I did not want to set up my power rack, I elected to make weighted calesthics like weighted push up variations, hand stand push ups between two boxes to get s full range, weighted pull up variations but I incorporatef dumbbell rows, barbell rows, Romanian deadlifts, banded good mornings, various dumbbell arm and shoulder movements curls, extensions. Lateral and rear delt raises, hanging leg raises. Calve raises, dumbbell floor presses. The weight I use in push ups is a combination of vest or backpack weight plus doubled knotted bands used for powerlifting. Although I have not performed the bench press, conventional deadlift or squat, I am significantly stronger on my weighted push ups and weighted pull up, my RDLs are better but it would require a month or two to relearn my perfect technique on paused bench presses, deadlifts off the floor And full squats. I know my muscles are stronger now but whether the carry over is anything significant I don't know abd don't care. My raw lifts were not done on the platform so to a powerlifter it's meaningless. Never the less I was well over the raw elite numbers in each lift at 205 and that means in would compete at ,198 and weigh 5 to 8 pounds more the next day. My ego still makes PRs on something mandatory to motivate me. I train using disciplined progressions going to failure only on low fatigue isolation exercises. .so I firmly believe strength can improve for many years but injury becomez much more likely as you age so warm ups using a variety of loads and never do something you aren't certain you can do. Working backwards from a goal makes knowing you will get the set for the prescribed reps is a foregone conclusion

Great show and I do find that I can gain so much knowledge from the Quahs at the end of podcast as well. I needed to hear your thoughts on reverse dieting today as I am going through my first one at the moment. I had got to that point where I would have to be on stupid tiny calories if I wanted to lose more fat. I was not gaining muscle either. With the reverse diet, I’m a little heavier and clothes are a bit tighter and so had a major wobble and was ready to quit. I have another month to go and so this has helped me to trust the process. I am seeing an increase in muscle and hope it’s going to translate to some PR’s! Love you guys!

8 months of working out 3 to 4 days a week and I went from 250 to 240 pounds. I was frustrated but I kept going. I had gotten significantly stronger and built a lot of muscle. Now keep in mind I was an athlete growing up and played 3 sports all the way through highschool so that’s probably why my strength went up so quick. I went from benching 135 3 sets of 10 to 225 3 sets of 10. Squatting 225 3 sets of 10 to 315 3 sets of 10. Dumbbell curling 25 pounds in each arm 3 sets of 10 to 50 pounds in each arm 3 sets of 10. I was definitely getting stronger but my weight wasn’t dropping. My best guess is I was swapping muscle for fat. I wasn’t counting calories but I was eating probably 80 percent clean. Weeks days during work I was eating a Mediterranean diet consisting of rice with all the vegetables sautéed on the flat top which were onions, green peppers, black olives, banana peppers, mushrooms, with my gyro meat and chicken then getting raw vegetables underneath my sautéed vegetables which were all of that I just listed plus tabouli, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, feta cheese and a little bit of ranch. I’ve eaten that every day for lunch for a year and haven’t missed a day. Dinner time I would eat healthy or moderately healthy. Breakfast was usually just coffee. The weekend is where I would mess up and I found that out when I started calorie counting with my fitness pal app. I would drink about 1600 calories of whiskey Friday night and sat night combined plus eat anywhere from 1,800 - 2,500 calories a NIGHT because of the drunk munchies 🤦🏽‍♂️ And I wondered why I wasn’t dropping weight 🤣🤣 I felt way better energy wise though and I built up a lot of muscle and strength. I’m now one month into counting calories and I eat 2,400 a day and I haven’t had alcohol in this month and I’ve dropped from 240 to 230. My goal is 210-215. I don’t use any supplements so my gains have been strictly from the Mediterranean diet, I highly recommend it, I also just had a physical done and everything came back great, which before I usually had an average blood pressure reading of about 138/90 which was high 😬 My blood pressure was 114/80 and everything else was within the range it needed to be in. Keep going and count those calories with an app tracker for best results. Been listening to these guys since I started my journey and have loved all of the advice, they have completely changed my relationship with food and how I fuel myself and how I look at exercise now. Also I have a 50 drive to work in the morning and they entertain me with there goofy ass side conversations 🤷🏽‍♂️ I have high pretty anxiety but don’t take medication for it plus I’m slightly bipolar but don’t take anything for it and exercise has tremendously improved my quality of life and helped me become a better dad and husband. Good luck to you all and know the grass is greener on the other side. 🙌🏽

I love the fact that you must be engaged in consistent strength training in order for your life to improve however … do you have any tips on how to improve a binge eating habit? I can tell that if I fixed it than my weight loss would finally improve. I would love to be surprised by losing 10 lbs 😂 14:51

for me budget protein would have to include soft tofu (to add to rice especially), tofu isn't as a high a quality protein but it's still fairly good and the soft tofu goes down super well, easily digestible etc. you can eat a TON of it easily. i would not recommend it as your only source of course but i love it for reaching my protein goals (along with eggs and cottage cheese) since sometimes meat can feel a little heave to me in large quantities and it digests longer whereas i can pack in the soft tofu very easily. Tofu gets a bad rap in America because people don't understand it's utility and they have no idea how to make it tasty, that's the barrier.

I think they should send out bubble sheets for everyone to choose how much of their taxes are allocated to different areas. We get to choose what percentage goes to military spending, education, infrastructure, etc. I think a lot of things would change if we could make that happen.

Problem with people hearing they are going on a bulk, I think they automatically assume “ice cream & cake”…..do it correctly and minimize the fat gain.💪🏼

My scale broke and I purposely did not replace it. The lbs have nothing to do with progress. And I am happier for it, I feel like less of a failure. I don’t even use a measuring tape. I just go by how I look in the mirror.

I'm thinking the reason the fitness industry focuses on calories is, it's quantifiable. It's so vague to talk about individual differences and behavior changes based on food choices. But math is math to a certain extent. It's an easier narrative if you don't dive into the nuance, and the nuance tends to scare people away. So the traditional fitness industry keeps it simple to help people be more receptive to getting started.

I'm struggling with some body dysmorphia right now. I see the scale going down and I'm getting stronger on my lifts. But I still hate what I see in the mirror more now then even 30 lbs ago

So what you guys are saying is to look at my nose not my stomach? 😂 This is great advice I’m two months in and it’s harder than I thought to concentrate on those things instead of the weight. ❤

Epigenetics, interesting how it maybe working for Sal. Wishing that was my outcome, unfortunately I just started strength training @52 and don’t have 30+ years of training, to be able to workout three days (less volume) weekly.
