The part about it being a hip hinge back when you bend down to grab the bar helped me. I've been squatting it up basically.

Idk of this tip will help anyone out but my shoulders were internally rotated. Externally rotating before the lift helped me able to retract and bring down my shoulders. It helped taking the weight out of my arms and kept my back yight. You know your deadlift is working if you feel your flutes acrivated before even lifting.

Hey guys! might be good to have also mentioned something about coordinating the knee with the hip movement. I have trouble explaining it to people and I'm not even sure I have it down set myself. I.e. the timing with straightening the legs and the hinging at the top of your legs, not banging your knees, scraping your shins, riding your thighs etc.. Which comes first etc and when do you change over... Ah - just noticed it says part 1... P.s. love the podcast. Long time listener. Will write a review soon I promise ;)

Adam I like your show especially the back episode. However, for those with old low back injuries deadlifts may not be possible. I've been doing rack pulls as ive been told not to lift from the floor. Even stiff leg deads on ham day leaves me with pain the next day and had to remove them. What do you suggest to build a complete back if you have low back restrictions?

If you are just starting the deadlift how can you modify this exercise? (I.e. Can't lift 45 lb plates on each side for the bar to be lifted at the proper height)
@AntonyStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Ideally your gym will have extremely light number plates. Ie same size as 45's but weigh 5. Other wise, I have the same question 😁
@cress19748 жыл бұрын
If your gym doesn't have bumper plates . You can lay some plates on the floor and put some 5s or 10s and pull off the plates on the floor.
@studentkenpo8 жыл бұрын
Don't worry about bar height. Use whatever plates you have access to/are able to lift. If you are using a smaller plate, let's say 25lbs, you will be starting the move from a deeper position and there is nothing wrong with that.

Sal: The conventional deadlift a great hypertrophy exercise?!?! Shit, no muscle goes through a full range of motion on it and it is more fatiguing than any other exercise. "great back developer"?? Do the lats go through a full range of motion in a deadlift?? And as for the deadlift improving strength everything else, the same could be said of the squat, and without the cost of excessive fatigue and without the same degree of risk because of bad technique, bad athropomology, and or mobility. Guys, leave the powerlifting lifts to powerlifters, and stick to general strength.
@longb19137 жыл бұрын
boxerfencer He said hypertrophy as in growth in back THICKNESS, lat pulleys and pull ups and such work your lat which is the muscle responsible for making your back WIDER. Learn the difference
@boxerfencer7 жыл бұрын
"It's a posterior chain movement. So, you're working all the back side of the body. It's a great back muscle developer, overall" (1:07). Learn to listen to what's said. And even if Sal were to say that it was a great muscle thickness developer, there's no full ROM. Learn basic biomechanics as to how it relates to hypertrophy.
@AmritP7 жыл бұрын
yeah i dunno if hypertrophy is a great word to use here, but it's definately a good exercise which every person who wants to get stronger should hit!

Wrong type of grip. A proper deadlift uses a reverse grip, one palm facing out one palm facing in. So he started wrong
