The lathe is cheap, but it punches slightly above its weight for that price. kzbin.infoUgkxKGVtPhqZBB5AQXXFlU2kdd4mQhO6wlhl Its not that powerful, the working area is very narrow, and the tailstock effectively moves less than an inch. However, this is a pen lathe at its core and none of those things matter for that. This will turn pens without issue. By far the nicest feature is the adjustable speed and overall size. If you have a small worksurface this is a great option. One thing i have not seen in the reviews (maybe I didn't look hard enough) is that the tool rest has been updated for the 3421 over the 3420. The tool rest can now be set to sit well below the center line of the spindle. Given this was the largest complaint the community seemed to have for the 3420, I'm surprised WEN doesn't include this more in their marketing material.

When I was in High-school woodshop, I learned that turning was probably one of the most interesting and somehow satisfying areas of woodworking. It's been so long now. But this absolutely unbelievable piece of work INSTANTLY throws me back through 5 decades, to the joy of creating pieces that somehow just resonate with something inside us. I STILL can't wrap my head around starting with a cube and getting wings... smh....and all the different laminated layers are just staggering at the end. Simply incredible piece. I'm glad, for all its flaws, that KZbin brings artists like you to the public's attention. Best to you.

Remember that if your spacial awareness is not best, you can use modern designing tools to help out with that. For instance get fusion 360, design a bowl or what ever you like shape vise, then make objects to present boards and other material, place them top of each other and with that you get dimensions of the plank, dimensions of materials to be cut, how it ends up looking and so on, heck even animate whole process and count how much it will weight eventually. I have excellent spacial awareness and i could barely figure out how he did this and i'm guessing nether he did know how it will end up, just mixed boards, flip them on angle and removed material until it looked good.

Can I offer thanks from another kind of woodturner? The kind - and there must be many - who can't safely turn any more. In my case a mixture of osteo-arthritis and myalgia that prevents me from even holding a chisel any longer. I was never a bowl turner or segmented turning enthusiast - I preferred small 'fancy' spindle turning. Each to his own of course. But if every woodturner learns nothing else, we learn an appreciation of other people's work. You'd think that - for me and folks like me - videos like this might be painful. But no - in fact they're a profound pleasure. I'd sooner watch exquisite work like this than the latest Netflix blockbuster. Beautiful work. Simply beautiful.
