One other note: the trick at the end has a gotcha. Lava won't burn the scaffolding, but scaffolding _is_ flammable; when the lava reaches the ground, if it sets something on fire, that fire can (and in my case, did) burn the scaffolding. Either have fire spread off or make sure the ground has nothing flammable on it.

4:58 Husks and zombies both drop 0-2 rotten flesh per mob, so why build in the desert? 5:21 why exactly 28 scaffolding? I calculated and found that this design would make the floor of the first mob spawning platform exactly 30 blocks above ground. What is the meaning of this number? Is it supposed to be the minimum height necessary to kill witches (with health 26, requiring 30 blocks of fall to kill)? 5:37 Note: the trapdoors are so that the scaffolding can extend out by 7 blocks. Scaffolds can overhang by only 6 blocks, while water flows for 7 blocks. The trapdoors can be replaced by any solid block. Since the airspace beneath the trapdoors is only 1.75, too low for most mobs (except spiders, which require only 3x1.5x3 to spawn), replacing the trapdoors with any solid block should be just fine with only a tiny decrease in efficiency for spawning spiders. 6:18 I just tried making a roofless mob farm, and it still works during the night, just with less efficiency. 6:53 Note: bottom slabs prevent mobs spawning on them. 7:59 Note: make sure the rail tracks are in the pictured direction, perpendicular to the line that the minecarts make, else the minecarts would push on each other and make the build messier. 8:38 Note: the height (relative to the ground) of the afk room does not have to be 127. It can be at a height of up to around 155. This is because the spawning radius is 128, and the bottom spawning platform is at height 30, so 128 + 30 = 158. Decrease by 3 (I think 2 is enough, but 3 to be safe) so that the bottom spawning platform is fully included in the spawning ball. I think putting the afk room at least 24 higher than the roof is useful as well, since mobs don't spawn within radius 24.
@ianxofour3 жыл бұрын
What a great series of questions and comments! Husks only spawn with direct sky access. Yes, the fall distance is needed to kill witches. The trapdoors that support the scaffolding also let creepers spawn; I agree that using solid blocks instead would only impact the rates a tiny bit. Making the afk spot lower means that you needs to light up more of the ground to ensure that mobs that spawning there don't interfere with the minecarts. Any caves underground within 128 distance can also compromise the productivity of the farm, so you need to light them up, too. I think its easier to just afk at +127. The video mentions a maximum of 25 spawning platforms before they start to encroach on the afk spot (within 24 blocks). Thank you for taking time to write these questions/comments and for your analysis!

This works so well. I did have a missing piece of scaffolding I had to go up and replace but other than that it worked like a charm first try. I'll be using this in every world I make from now on. A few things of note: check the biome of the entire area you are placing the farm in (I got mostly desert but some beach and wish I'd have taken a bit more time to check), if you build the full 25 tiers you'll need about four stacks short of a full double chest of scaffolding., This seems to get witches quite a bit too as I get Redstone, bottles, sticks, and glow stone dust, quite a bit. I continue to be impressed by the usefulness of the videos in this channel.

Damn this is clever, everything about it is so precisely designed. I never thought about using scaffolding as vertical redstone transmission The temporary roof idea is an aspect of good design thats often overlooked in our world of permanent fixtures, but is very common in biological engineering. Being able to re-use old builds for new builds is so elegant. Engineering elegance aside though, I'm kind of obsessive and would be slightly bothered by one of the platforms being a different color lol, so I'd probably just build the top roof the first time i want a roof, and have empty space to put more platforms in later if i want. Whats the maximum height the roof should be at? That was certainly a convenient way to make a bubble column
@ianxofour3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jake! The roof should be just over the topmost scaffolding platform for best performance, and the farm can accommodate 25 platforms before they start to encroach on the afk space.

Small note for anyone wants to improve their farm bit by bit: 1. It would save a lot of effort to build the roof as high as possible (24 blocks from afk platform or 2 blocks away from 25th layer) , You only need to build more layers when you get more bamboo. 2. Like the traditional design, this farm can be upgraded into creeper + spider farm, just cover the roof of every layer (under the scaffolding) with trapdoor to limit the zombies, skeletons and witches from spawning (They are too tall to spawn)

Unfortunately, 1.19.3 has obsoleted this design, since mobs can no longer spawn on top of scaffolding. This makes me sad because otherwise the design is amazing. However, I'm pretty sure you can still rely on the center scaffolding tower to propagate the redstone signal to the dispensers and just use top slabs for the platforms as you mentioned.

Amazing video! Super informative and well structured. A question that has been burning me is why not build the farm in a deep ocean biome? Wouldn't this ensure that all mobs spawn inside the farm? Or is lighting the immediate area at the bottom enough as the afk spot is far enough away? Thanks!

I build this in my world, capped at 5 levels, and I'm super pleased with it. Unless you need a truly insane quantity of mob drops, 3 or 4 levels is more than enough. Some notes for others doing this in survival: - Scaffolding is fast to build. It's also fast to destroy. When there's this much overhang, it's really easy to accidentally left-click instead of right-click and drop half a platform, possibly including the bit you're standing on. - Taxi-cab overhang distance means that you must build the rows of the diamond in order. You can't, for example, build out one long-row of the diamond, and then fill in the sides towards the center. Build everything from the middle outwards. - None of the resources used in this are very rare or hard to get, even fairly early in the game. But it does use a lot of them. Each platform is 66 scaffolding, plus 128 scaffolding to get to the first level. The final roof (if I understood correctly, going 21 out from the center) is 861 slabs. - When adding new levels, make sure to flip the switch to turn off the clock. I forgot this once, and as soon as you put the water in the dispenser, you start getting pushed off the platform, and a waterfall will wash away the clock circuit. I never considered using scaffolding in such a big way, this is really clever.

Excellent video, thank you for showing me mechanics I have never seen before. That made me instantly subscribe :) However, would it be possible to make a water funnel at the bottom of the farm so I can kill them with a looting 3 (netherite) sword?
@ianxofour3 жыл бұрын
Hi Technoverse! Have you watched my video for "instant gold xp farm"? You can use water to push mobs into a portal elevator to take them to the afk spot, where you can use looting 3. This is on my list of projects to cover in a video. Let me know if this is unclear. I'd be happy to help you set this up.
@doyounglee78353 жыл бұрын
@@ianxofour Thanks for the quick reply. I actually built the gold farm two days ago (It's working perfectly), but I was thinking I would just afk up top and drop down to collect the resources, how much faster would it be to make the portal elevator? Edit: I think I have a rough idea of how to build the portal elevator. Make a portal on the ground, go inside of it to the nether, make a tube so that they get pushed to another portal that links up to a portal that I set up on the afk spot.
@ianxofour3 жыл бұрын
@@doyounglee7835 It would be a ton faster to make the portal elevator, rather than dropping down to collect stuff, which might not even be worthwhile due to all the efficiencies. The portal elevator should more than double the productivity of the farm. The nether "tube" that you need to make may need to be wider than the one for the gold farm. It needs to be able to hold all the mobs over the course of 15 seconds at least so that they can cool down for the second portal. Let me know how it goes!
@doyounglee78353 жыл бұрын
@@ianxofour I decided to forgo the nether portal elevator. but I kept the water funnel and directed to some magma blocks with hopper minecarts underneath. The mobs spawn outside of the farm, and they never seem to spawn inside the scaffolding. I did light up the areas around the farm, but they still didn't spawn. It kinda works, but the rates seem very crippled. I think I might be due to my afk place. The lowest point of the farm (killing chamber) is y = 58, and the lowest spawning platform is at y=72, and my afk room is at y = 177. What am I doing wrong?

Brilliant design. I just built this in my newest world. Actually twice. I made a tiny three-level version near my home base just to get some string and gunpowder, but it was too close to some hills that affected spawning. I then went out and rebuilt a bigger version of it in a far-away desert. But that's (just) one of the reasons this is so genius. It was so easy to build. I've made several of the other versions, but laying out all the slabs and blocks takes forever and I'd hate the prospect of tearing it down and rebuilding. The fact that scaffolding can be placed in the correct shape by just clicking and the overflow falls off makes this ridiculously easy. Also, how easy it is to expand. Thanks again for a great design.

hey, the top of my farm goes all the way to the build limit - where should I put the AFK spot in this case?
@ianxofour3 жыл бұрын
Just go as high as you can go to afk. You can even stand directly on the roof center if needed. Normally you want at least 24 blocks of distance between your afk spot and the topmost spawning platform because mobs cant spawn any closer than that, but the extra platforms in your case arent hurting the farm, so there's no need to dismantle them. Let me know if you have any more questions, and thanks for watching!

@ianxofour3 жыл бұрын
Hi James. Yes this can be changed to a creeper-only farm by using trapdoors and glass blocks laid out like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nabZfqCamr-kn6s Fun fact. Instead of trapdoors, you can use scaffolding instead! Scaffolding acts just like trapdoors by blocking skeletons and zombies, but letting creepers (and spiders) spawn underneath. Thanks for subbing! Next up is probably a gold farm.

*LEAVING MY COMMENT UP IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE IS AN IDIOT LIKE ME* EDIT: I put the tower of scaffolding up from the solid block, NOT the trapdoor. Do not do that lol. Hey, I have followed this tutorial (I think) to the letter on Java 1.18.1 and the redstone signal doesn't flow up from the trap door being changed to the first observer. If I break the piece of scaffolding directly below it , the water dispenses correctly on each level and the water retracts when the scaffolding is replaced, so that bit is working. I just cant get it working automatically.. Any ideas?
