I really wished they kept strongholds to generate with a surface entrance. Not only do you need eyes of ender to find the stronghold without stumbling upon it, you need it to enter the portal. It's much cooler to enter through the top and find it incase the eyes are glitched, and strongholds generate with an entrance but it's underground so it's kind of inconvenient to enter. also above ground, it's much cooler looking. Reminds me of exposed mineshafts in mesa biomes. I think above ground stronghold entrances are much cooler, the screenshot of it looks so cool!

I remember being really excited for all of the changes in 1.8 and release. I say this as someone who has generally be a huge fan of every addition to the game, but as the years have gone by and as I've revisited some of the old versions of Minecraft, I think I can really pinpoint a handful of changes that have created the most friction for me over the years and if they had to go back and do it all over again, I wouldn't mind not seeing. 1) Beds and Phantoms Make the game very, very easy. This is one of the older additions, but I think it set the tone of a lot of these problems by making the game a bit *too* convenient. They really should have made skipping the night require a bit more effort than collecting 3 wool and some wood Moving onto Phantoms. On their own, I think Phantoms are a great mob, but the way they were implemented. You either never see them or are dealing with them pretty much all of the time. It's just exacerbates the effect that sleep has on the game by effectively putting players on a timer to skip the night or be punished 2) Hunger I feel like it needed more time in development as the hunger and saturation system has grown a bit tedious. Sprint and natural regeneration are great QOL features, but the hunger system makes them easy to use but tedious to maintain. Not to mention that it sort of broke combat by making mobs easy to kite without much effort. I do like that it's allowed for more food variety, but it's not much when you can get the best food in the first minute of gameplay. 3) Elytra Flight I think people massively underestimated the power of Elytra flight as it almost single handedly invalidated every mode of transportation the player has at their disposal. They felt underwhelming as just a glider, sure, but having so much flight time at your fingertips is pretty insane. A big part of Minecraft pre-Elytra was building roads and railways and post-Elytra this need just vanished. It's not a good or bad change, though I feel like I preferred the feeling of needing to invest in a world and build infrastructure to have easy means of transportation rather than the feeling of unlimited flight at your fingertips as soon as you find an end city (as fun as that feeling can be). 4) 1.14 Villager Trades Just straight-up destroyed progression. There's really not much else to say about this.
@haiperbus
@haiperbus Жыл бұрын
Mojang doesn't think things through if they see kids are hype about it sadly. I wholeheartedly agree with your entire post, especially the villagers and elytra. Those 2 systems just straight up encourage players to bypass the game's content, and for what? The endgame has nothing besides a mediocre boss fight. Some players find joy in building, but it takes someone with lots of patience and stubbornness to actually put effort into building. Survival mode is extremely hostile towards the sandbox aspect while trivializing the combat and exploration. I've been preparing to start a modded server with friends and decided that it was my chance to fix some of these specific issues. For elytra, I'm removing firework boosts all together, instead you need to srart up high or set up some kind of infrastructure that launches you. This forces players to have to travel by foot when exploring new places and only using elytra for pleces where constant travel is necessary. Second is villages. Remove them entirely, and adopt the terraria system where occasionally a lone wanderer shows up to your base and you can offer shelter. Giving them a workstation and custom house, lord knows the game needs more reasons to build stuff. The code is already there in wandering traders, and I miss the almost oppressive loneliness of beta.

For elytra and villagers, you can ignore them, thats the best part of minecraft, nearly every eddition is something you have to choose to explore for, and honestly villagers are fine, they allow for cool bases and markets, if you dont think it feels vanilla or breaks your playstyle, then play an older version
@awyrlas
@awyrlas Жыл бұрын
@BT-7274 This reasoning always falls flat for me as a game designer. Players are always going to go with the path of least resistance and will optimize the fun out of a game without even noticing. There is no ignoring a feature because you don't like it because most players want to actually, ya know, play the game. It's the responsibility of the developers to curate this experience. This is why I consider them both to be such "problems." They're too good not to engage with. Who wants to walk or build infrastructure when you can fly? Who wants to mine diamonds or set up an enchanting table when you can just trade for what you need? They both undermine core aspects of the game so substantially it can feel like you're wasting your time not to chase after them.
@awyrlas

@Box I think the problems with the hunger system are smidge deeper than its interactions with combat, though it certainly should help. Now here's hoping it's not another 4 year wait for those changes to be implemented.

3:40 When you talk about how "creepy" the beta villages looked and the overall "implication of life but lack of" in Minecraft at the time you hit the nail on the head of what I miss from Minecraft. Back then Minecraft had an overall creepy or unsettling atmosphere. You were alone in this vast but empty world with nothing but the occasional animal or zombie or creatures that hunted you at night. I miss that. In modern Minecraft with bustling villages and monuments and pillagers etc. instead of this isolated feeling it just feels like you're some kind of wild mountain man living in the woods avoiding civilization for no reason. Thinking about it the isolated feeling of old Minecraft gives me similar vibes to Metroid Prime, same type of deal where you're alone isolated on a world hostile to you where there are signs of life once being there but mysteriously now all gone. Modern Minecraft no longer has any of that. EDIT: "I wasn't active in the Minecraft community when the adventure update dropped because I was 8" Jesus Christ just drive a stake through my heart why don't you? Really good video, subbed! This update is very controversial for me, on one side I do really much enjoy modern minecraft and argubly these updates put it on that path, but on the other side I think it really removed minecraft's original feel of surviving and building yourself up overtime and instead put it down a path of becoming a game where its mostly about just getting the most op stuff you can get and then building whatever you want. I think notch and mojang wanted to make minecraft be a bigger more replayable game then beta, which yeah is kind of lacking in features and can get old after a few weeks. And Beta 1.8/1.9/1.0 did that for the most part, but really started to sacrafice the original "feel" and gameplay loop of minecraft was. I wonder if they knew that they were making such a gigantic and game changing leap back then, and if they did, what did they think the future of minecraft would be. That being said, I don't think minecraft before beta 1.8 is way better than minecraft after, they both have their good sides and downsides. As iDeactivate said, their kind of different games, and the community should really start recognizing and treating them as such. Anyways thats all I have to say for now, I would really like to see a video about minecraft from 1.0 to 1.8 and 1.10 to 1.12 when the game had updates that were really directionless, since I think that really disproves the argument of microsoft ruining the game.

I wish you went more into the addition of SPRINTING into the game. That was probably the biggest feature of 1.8 and one of the most monumental changes in Minecraft HISTORY. It drastically changed world traversal and platforming as a whole and ultimately, increased the PACE of the game. It was a pivotal moment for the game and while relatively simple, it definitely deserved a bigger mention for the Adventure update

When I was 10, I didn't really own any games but watched a lot of let's plays. I watched tons of Minecraft video's and played the Minecraft demo countless times. Eventually my dad agreed to buy the game for me and I could finally play the full version. Apparently the adventure update just released around the time that I first got the game and I didn't even know there was an update system back then. When I saw the hunger bar and XP bar for the first time I was very confused. I had never seen any video's with this UI. IMO the vibe of the game really changed with that update and I'm kind of bummed that I didn't play any of the previous beta versions. These previous versions and the atmosphere that the game had back then was the image I had of the game but never really got to experience myself.

I remember watching a Beta 1.9 Prerelease Let's Play series on KZbin in 2012. I had just heard of the game in school and wanted to check it out. It seemed glorious! The building, the exploring, the infinite world... And then I, a kid who had never been allowed to play many video games before, sucked at it. I was just awful. My hobbies at the time were Legos, hiking, and reading. I just hadn't developed the reaction time needed to fight monsters. So I played in Peaceful mode... and Minecraft was infinite again. I didn't have to feel like I was bad at the game because I couldn't kill the ender dragon, because the ender dragon didn't exist. I was good at the things I wanted to be good at. I built, I explored, and I told my own story. ...and then the guys in my class introduced me to multiplayer Infected and I started sniping people from rooftops instead. I still feel an odd disconnect between the different versions and playstyles. Beta was different from today's Minecraft, but I can see a lot of it in Peaceful too. No hunger. No potion-making. No dragon. No End. It's the sort of split that also exists between survival and creative modes, too. It's a split between different games. Minecraft is a sandbox game. A schoolyard game, in a sense. Most people may choose to play a certain way, but you don't have to join in. You can make your own rules. You can still open the launcher and run the old beta 1.8.1.

Nobody knew anything about them, but we were sure that there was more to come. It was without a doubt *the most exciting* time for Minecraft. If the End had released at the same time, its inhabitants wouldn't have been nearly as interesting. There would have been a dragon to steal the show, after all. But loading up Beta 1.8 and hearing that horrifying shriek for the first time, with absolutely no context... I really want to experience that time again.

My brother, my best friend, and I went and played Minecraft for months straight when this came out. It truly changed how I felt about Minecraft. It went from a pure sandbox to an adventure game, in my eyes. Now my annual Minecraft binge always devolves into getting a "god" version of every item and beating the game. Then laying it to rest until I need to play again. I'm definitely of the adventurer arch-type.

I was playing Minecraft around the time the adventure update was being teased (I was 11). This was when I was most enthusiastic and active with the game. At the time I was excited about anything Mojang would put out. I had no real reason to expect an update could have negative consequences since all the other updates were consistently positive. During the reveals at Minecon 2011 I got a distinct feeling that this was *modern*. A feeling that the game was becoming something brand new and polished. My first thoughts weren't that it was the death of an era, it's rather that the game was sprouting into new exciting directions. The hype build up for this update was so extreme that there weren't really any concerns about how much the game was changing. At the time preservation wasn't really the goal since it didn't seem possible that added features would actually have some kind of meaningful consequence. Rather, I think we trusted that the brain behind Minecraft knew what he was doing and we were just all in it for the ride. When I first tried the update I do admit to feeling like the game felt very foreign. The vibe of the game was completely different from that moment on. However, I didn't necessarily translate that difference to "worse". I just thought it's basically a new game that I'll be getting used to. Somehow I couldn't really shake the feeling that I wasn't really enjoying the experience as much though. The new features were fun and all, but it felt like the game lost its "subtlety". It felt very videogamey. The sentiment now is very different. I think people are becoming aware that Mojang actually doesn't know what they're doing and it feels like they need to be carefully micromanaged by the community to prevent them from making poor decisions. The Adventure Update was most likely the *first* poor decision, but no one really noticed it at the time. You can't convince a mob of happy people that the update that releases Minecraft is a bad one (at least in some ways).

Man, I was 10 when Beta 1.8 came out and I remember it feeling kinda underwhelming? It's strange actually, I only did the End Dragon fight for the first time a couple months ago, even though it's been around for the majority of the time I've been playing the game. Stuff like Hunger and the new food and bow mechanics felt really really strange, but QoL stuff like sprinting I am so glad they added these days. I think this was when they started to diverge from focusing on the stuff I really liked about the game, but the QoL changes since beta make it very hard to go back to 1.7.3 or so on. The mention of Pocket Edition was a real blast to the past too, I remember playing it when it first got released on general android devices and it was such a surreal game. Really short render distances and limited mechanics so that the whole world was just kinda covered in fog was super creepy.

The dragon and villagers genuinely felt alien at the time. Like it was a transplant from an entirely different game. It got criticism for being like Skyrim but I think it’s because notch always intended for the game to be more fantasy mmo esque but it wasn’t done in time. I recommend you to play the "Better Than Adventure" mod. It's a 1.7.3 beta mod created in 2021 that basically modernizes beta minecraft without losing the gameplay "feel" that beta mc had. I remember being excited about the b1.8 adventure update as well, and I played the subsequent versions a lot also, but the game truly and irreparably changed from that point on. It had an objective, one that I myself never felt pressured to achieve as that wasn't the game I played since alpha (I only killed the dragon 4 years after release 1.0). The game before beta 1.8 was eerie, it was only you and your friends in an empty world, that tried to kill you at night and in the dark. Mobs had almost the same speed as you, there was no running out, you had to fight or die. Then, you could sprint and avoid combat, there were villagers, and you now have to use them in recent versions for your progression. Enchantments felt unbalanced and still are until this day, enchanted armor protects almost all damage and enchanted swords kill almost everything in one or two hits. The game nowadays feels full of items and mechanics yet very boring. Beta minecraft was also boring, but it owned it. The world was yours, you shape it the way you want it. The game wasn't trying to be something that it's not (a RPG).

@@llucmou I'll have to try it out, thanks for the recommendation. Beta 1.8 was a really weird turning point for Minecraft. I think in all the time I've been playing I fought the ender dragon maybe twice. It's not a fun boss to fight. I'm not a huge fan of the way enchantments are set up, like you said they are broken and really need fixed. Plus if you're like me and play java, the combat needs fixing. I agree that the beta combat system wasn't optimal and needed improvement, but what they ended up doing was more like moving backwards. It just doesn't work for me. There's all kinds of new blocks to build with but I still mainly build with the same block types I always did in beta, wood and stone. I don't know why but a lot of the new blocks just don't really interest me and the ones that do look out of place in builds that I make.

I started playing Minecraft in July 2011, so Beta 1.7 was my first version of the game. I was just about to turn 13 when Beta 1.8 came out, and holy Hera I was confused. The whole hunger mechanic absolutely threw me for a loop (but being able to stack food was nice). I remember absolutely hating the change to lighting, where light produced from blocks would be tinted yellow, while sunlight remained the classic greyscale. The addition of villages and endermen was interesting though (and I remember originally thinking that it was the endermen who built the villages). I especially miss being able to use Bows like machine guns

No one is talking about how much more brutal Minecraft was before the adventure update. You couldn't sprint, meaning you couldn't outrun spiders, so wandering outside during the night was very dangerous, you were almost guaranteed to be forced into a fight. There was no hunger bar, meaning there was no health regen. Instead food would instantly heal you for some amount, which sounds better except that food didn't stack. If you wanted to bring more resources you had to leave food behind. Food was also harder to come by, the only animal that dropped food was the pig and we couldn't breed animals, farming was much slower since there was no bone meal and zombies didn't drop rotten meat, so if you ran out of food while caving you couldn't heal. Arrows didn't reach as far, were slower and did less damage. This includes skeleton arrows, but they shot like one arrow every second, they could be super annoying to deal with. I love how the game evolved but I also sometimes miss how much more challenging it used to be.

NGL when minecraft 1.8 came out it was exciting in a sense of like "oh cool, this little indie game became so big that not only is it launching officially but it had a convention for it that was huge" but like... the actual contents themselves were not as interesting as its own success story. It was just kind of like "oh hey go find this dungeon thing" and I remember I just kinda continued doing what I usually did in minecraft back then which was get on a server, mess around with friends, and call it a day.

I was there during the beta rollout and I didn't feel disappointed that the update was split in half. Like you mentioned, back in alpha/beta updates were much more common so usually we'd just go a few months at most without an update. Because updates were only a few months away from each other it meant time from the announcement of features to implementation was short as well. Compare that with today how updates get announced at minecon usually around 6-8 months before release and how caves and cliffs was split across 3 different updates that took over a year to roll out and it makes sense why people don't like split updates now. I didn't actually like the adventure update (like a lot of people back then) but I can respect and appreciate what it tried to do

When beta 1.8 dropped, I was 11 years old and was aware of the game's existence for a few months at that point, and I distinctly remember a friend from school telling me that the game now sucks since if you don't eat, you die. I know I was excited for the update and loved exploring the new additions, but it didn't feel the same to me anymore in some sense. At first I accepted this as the natural progress of the game, but looking back, some of those changes weren't all that good.

As someone who has played since Beta 1.4.4, I had a lot of mixed feelings around the adventure update, and still do. I was only 12-13 at the time, and I was very much against change whatsoever. I liked the new mobs and loved the new things I could find, but boy howdy did I hate the hunger mechanic. It just felt so unnecessary and contrived. Being able to sprint was nice, but tying health regen to a separate bar was confusing and really put me off. It felt like the game I had fallen in love with in the last 8 months had become a separate game entirely, and I actually went back and played mostly on 1.4-1.7 for a while cuz of that as well, resisting playing the new update. Now, I'm still not a big fan of hunger. It still feels like unneeded complexity for the sake of complexity. But I love the game as a whole.

I remember so vividly the 1.9 pre release era of the game, as it's when I started playing. I was around 12 years old back then. I've been so obsessed with Minecraft since the alpha of the game, just from watching KZbin content. I saw from a 3rd person perspective how Minecraft was shaped up to be what it is until 1.8. I remember seeing a video with Minecraft 1.8 in the title, immediately clicked it, and the first time I saw the running feature I was like 😮, endermans scared the living shit out of me, and everything in this update just filled me with a sense of wonder, it was so good. 1.9 pre release had me even more excited, as the beloved game finally got a proper end to it. I really felt it was the end is the classic Minecraft era. From then on, I grabbed a cracked version of 1.9, and was immediately hooked into it for years to come (btw don't worry, I did buy the game after a few years 😊). It was the golden era for me. Thanks for talking about this! Liked an subbed. Keep up the great job. God you sent me on such a nostalgia trip. I’ve come to love the game Minecraft became post Beta 1.8, but I remember feeling such a sense of loss when the release version came out. It was a fundamentally different game than the one I’d been playing with my friends for so long. You highlighting how short of a time the game spent in alpha and beta really put some things into perspective. I started playing at the tail end of 1.3 but really got into it around 1.5. It’s crazy to believe all the dumb fun that my friends and I got onto from then to 1.8 was such a brief period of time. We all stopped playing for a while after release 1.0. I want to try to get the band back together now 😭 Thank you for this vid bro! All happy tears revisiting this 😭😭😭

This is hugely nostalgic, as this was actually around the time that I _stopped_ playing Minecraft. I was super hyped for all the stuff being added to 1.8, and after it’s reveal that went over how the terrain generation would be overhauled, if I remember right I had decided that I would make a brand new world when it released (I had only ever play on the one world). And since I would be doing that, in my mind there was no real reason to keep playing on my old world when I would soon be abandoning it, so I decided to take a break from it until it released. And then I heard the news that the update was going to be split in two. Okay…so yeah, a part of me was disappointed that we weren’t getting the full update, but I understood. And I figured that since it was only a half update and I had waited this long already, I’d just wait until that second part came out…which shouldn’t take long, right? Well, unfortunately those 5 months did feel like years, and after having waited that long I had kind of gotten into other things. Plus, I think there was already talks of the next update, and so I thought I would maybe just wait until the game was _complete_ before jumping back in in case there was another generation overhaul or something. So yeah…in a way, it being split in half did indeed hurt the game as far as me playing it was concerned; just not quite for the same reasons you gave. I did a few years later try playing it again. I started a new world, which put me right in the middle of a jungle. Of which I struggled in - it felt so cluttered and claustrophobic that I had a hard time even moving around and got hopelessly lost. I also was struggling with the new hunger mechanic as I had a really hard time finding food. The cows, chickens, and pigs that I was so use to finding an abundance of were much rarer, and didn’t seem to respawn after I had eliminated them for their food (I also assumed that I would outright die from hunger when it started taking out my hearts). Eventually I found my way out of that jungle, and right next to it found a hill with snow on top. That’s where I tried making my first base. First and foremost though I wanted to craft a bed so that I could respawn there upon death and NOT back in the jungle again wherein I may very well not be able to find my way back to my new base. But once again, I was finding it hard to find sheep to get the wool needed for it from. I think I played it for like a couple of days before giving up again. Sure, I could probably have played a bit more and eventually get myself settled…but at the same time it just didn’t feel at all the same as the game I remembered, though I wasn’t sure why exactly. In hindsight I think it was the fact that none of the terrain generation would make terrain that was anywhere close as the kind I remember (as I think technically that hill I found was considered a full on mountain). I say that because once the caves & cliffs update was revealed (I would check in on the game from time to time to see generally speaking what kind of new stuff was being added to the game) and I saw that video of someone gliding through mountains before diving into a giant cave system that just kept going on and on, I actually got super excited and felt the desire to play it again. So I figured that I would do just that once the update released. Ironically though, it in itself being split into 2 parts (technically even 3 or 4 parts given that the Warden and archaeology didn’t even make it into that 2nd part) killed a lot of the enthusiasm I had for the update, and didn’t jump in to play again. After this most recent update finally gets released though, I think I’ll finally pick the game up again. Which I’m sure will be quite the experience given that there’s literally over a decade’s worth of content that will feel new to me when I play.

I kind of get the "sandbox building game to RPG" analogy but at the same time I don't. Isn't the entire point of playing survival mode over creative is that it is a challenging adventure; due to the implemented limitations of having health and needing to obtain resources? I believe hunger builds upon that. However, it's true that there would only be so many survival mechanics you could add before it reduces too much freedom. But I guess the line where that gets drawn is subjective (for example i think if vanilla were like RLcraft it would be too unapproachable for most people).
@anty.
@anty. Жыл бұрын
A possible solution for this would be enabling/disabling more features based on one's difficulty setting. The three main non-peaceful difficulties are mostly the same except with changed variables. It would be nice if Easy disabled hunger and maybe made food work like before the adventure update, Normal was mostly the same as it is now, and Hard added more survival features for people who are interested in those aspects of the game.

I had first started playing on my own server with a few colleagues, somewhere around Beta 1.7, then stopped sometime during the Beta 1.9 Pre-Releases. My reaction to the Adventure Update was mostly that: - potions and enchanting were cool (I've always wanted more magic), - the villagers felt very strange, - the giant mushrooms growing randomly were annoying and ruining the view from my castle, - Iron Bars were great cause I could now build the kind of gate that I wanted to, - it was neat that they were adding stuff and the potential seemed limitless. That was about it, I wasn't reading much about the development plans at the time. Some time later, one of my friends was like "hey, did you know you can actually beat Minecraft now?", and the concept was insane to me. It didn't make sense to me that this game has an "ending" now. I then checked it out and it didn't take that long to beat either, and I remember being rather unimpressed with what the process looked like. Since then, I'd play Minecraft sparingly, here and there, on whatever version there happened to be at the time, and I didn't really have particular memories with any of them. Until 1.19.2, which I've been playing for a year with a shitton of mods (including my own). Whatever the version might have been, I haven't really ever cared much for the Ender Dragon. It's cool that she's in there, but when I went to the End in my recent playthrough, it was primarily just to explore the modded End In retrospect, I like the vast majority of the things that the Adventure Update did, it added much needed depth and variety to an otherwise barren game. The same thing over and over again would have gotten boring to me. If there's anything I personally actively dislike from that update, it's that it enabled people to build all those villager farms and otherwise abuse the game in numerous ways, which has kinda become the meta. I find no fun in that and I think these contraptions are too thematically ill-fitting and immersion breaking. Of course, I am free to just not do those things if I don't want to, but it remains a consideration for larger multiplayer servers

Ah man beta Minecraft still gives me so much joy to this day. I was 8 at the time that I first started playing Minecraft, and I started playing during beta 1.6.5 which also came out earlier in May 2011. I just remember being extremely excited by the idea of what "The Adventure Update" could entail. I was imagining them adding all sorts of dungeons similar to something you would've seen back in the Aether mod, so ultimately I was a little bit disappointed in the end. I was mostly really excited about sprinting when I found out about that though, that probably excited me the most. Being able to run endlessly through a world generating in front of me was something my little 8 year old self loved and it's something I still appreciate. There was also all the new forms of food which was pretty cool honestly, but there were also really subtle changes that I absolutely loved like pigs noses actually becoming 3D instead of a flat texture as well as chests no longer being a full sized block with a flat texture

I find it interesting how much the version number of the game is important to the audience of minecraft. Like most video game communities don’t pay attention to version number because it doesn’t matter, but with minecraft, people know every update and what version it had. The only games I see where people care about the version is stuff like stardew valley, Skyrim, and cyberpunk, and even then it is really only because they’re either fixing bugs, and/or fucking over the modders. Stardew is the closest to Minecraft in this way jn that each update brings pretty substantial content.

I was just a year older than you were when the update came out, I had been playing since Alpha and was addicted to the game. I remember being the the only person amongst all my friends to have played it and having to convince my friends to get it when it finally came to Xbox. I was very unhappy when the update came, it felt odd and not like the game I had loved but at the same time being young and in love with the game I quickly came to enjoy it and all the new features it added. I recall having to build exp farms since the best enchantments were 50 levels each and the big achievement it felt like to beat the game. Now I do feel like Minecraft has a lifespan and oddly enough it starts once you “beat” the game. Once you kill the ender dragon you’re already in the post game, the wither is just an endgame bonus. I think that why I’ve been playing the older beta 1.7.3 for so long now, it feel like the game goes on forever since there’s nothing to do to beat just enjoy your time and relax with however you want to shape the world

This was a great video, thank you for how you presented all the information and timeline of this era of the game. Just based off old bits of memories I have along with looking into when certain updates were released, I have come to the conclusion that I likely began playing during the fall of 2012 when 1.3 was the newest update and I would've been 9 years old at the time. With all of that said, this means I never really got the chance to see this early part of development so it's really fascinating to get a glimpse of what I had missed. Thank you again!

I was in high school when adventure update released, I remember being SO HYPED because the game was cool and we played it a lot with friends (we had an old laptop running our servers jar 24/7 at a friends house lol) but we felt for the first time we wanted the game to evolve a bit, and honestly those first 1.8 teasers were so enigmatic. I also vividly remember upgrading our server to one of the beta 1.9 pre releases, risky move but somehow nothing went wrong haha Awesome video :)

I was 10 when this all was happening. I remember being so excited after playing beta 1.8 and talking to my mom about full release 1.0 whilst we were walking to her workplace at a public healthcare unit (still her job 11 years later!) She didn't really understand much of what I was saying, but seemed happy that I was happy. I remember trying out a preview for beta 1.8 on a Brazilian server called Craftlandia, where they had a stable branch and a preview branch with no rules or anything for newer versions - even with pvp on, people mostly just talked and explored the new version. It was so cool. I miss my childhood man.

I was 10 when Beta 1.8 dropped and me and my bro barely started playing just before it’s launch. It feels like yesterday that we discovered our first ravine and mineshaft as well as a village before villagers came out. Glowstone and Diamond blocks were the coolest blocks ever, building the first skyscrapers or underwater biodomes before sponges had a use, idk it felt so magical. To me it still feels crazy how much time has passed and also to this day content like anvils, desert temples, ocean monuments hell even elytras still feel like new features even though I’ve been playing the game for 10+ years. At my job, it feels surreal seeing kids coming in with their phones or tablets playing Minecraft when I’ve been playing the game way before they were around too. I feel old lol

I remember waiting for the Adventure Update to finally come out on the Xbox 360 version and being blown away when it finally did come out. I was already in love with the game before, but the Adventure Update was an amazing one imo

Imagine if there are actual early builds of Beta 1.8 in existance. I'd be MIND BLOWN if I saw that. There's something so interesting in the idea of two entirely different versions that mark the end and the beginning of two eras, just mashed together in one incomplete mess. Old school world generation combined with those wide rivers, ravines, random giant mushrooms here and there, those old villages populated by.. pigmen? Surface dungeons and of course, green-eyed endermen. Maybe running doesn't make your FOV change? Maybe there's no eating animation despite there being a hunger bar? It'd be like the holy grail of lost Minecraft versions. or I'm just a nerd lol But sadly, those builds most likely don't exist anymore.. hope I said it well, I'm not good at english

All I can remember playing was 3 very different versions because I live in a place were internet can be hard. The first was when you are in the browser and only had one hotbar of items and the terrain was horrible, old alpha stages if im correct.Second was the pumpkin beta update, the coolest thing you could do was make paintings and pots for your rose or dandelion lol. Then the Third; horses, donkeys, mules, and enchanting came. I can't even explain the amount of time I spent on that update because of no internet, but wow it was the best years. I had always stayed up to date with minecraft through social media at that time and it was always fun watching other people enjoy the game. Eventually I had got my game up to date just around the combat update, somewhere in the 1.7's. Sorry for the total tangent, regardless Minecraft has become far greater then what it was and I love how far it has come, hell even writing this i almost tear up a few times lol. I can't wait to see where it's going to go from here. (p.s. I love your videos already.)

I remember that time so vividly. i was about 11 when Minecraft "released" and damn it was a time, that's when i first started playing myself but i had lived and breathed Minecraft KZbin content with people like the Yogscast and so many other people from the time. I always feel like everyone remembers that time but then i realize how old i am now when some kid doesn't know anything about old Minecraft or has no idea what a Yogscast is 😂😂or are shocked when they do know them but didn't know Minecraft was their bread and butter for so long. I definitely miss those times.

As someone who grew up with legacy console Minecraft mentally the update that makes the game go from old Minecraft to modern Minecraft is the update that changed the world. I guess its hard to explain a feel for something like that but that update added so many new bioms to the point where it didn't really feel like the same game.

I have to believe we got Tails and Trails to add more lore/history, and it’s simply a precursor to a much larger update where we explore more about the ancient cities and deep dark, and Warden origin. I also believe this is why “Legends” now exists. They warm us up to the alternate dimension thing, and how there’s not just a singular world (which we’ve always “known” since all of us have different worlds). I think some of the archeology will somehow lead us into finding answers for the deep dark etc.

in 2011, when the Adventure Update came, I was....... 13 years old, and I vaguely remember playing a modpack (or just a massive overhaul mod) called "Adventurecraft". It got stuck at version Beta 1.7.3. mechanics . It had the first, early implementation of an adventure mode, with NPCs to talk to, monsters to fight, swords to collect, and not being able to break blocks! At all!

That original 1.8 update was absolutely massive. Though it obviously wasn't done, it changed SO much about the game, and honestly made it feel a lot more completely, despite the meager amount it held in comparison to modern updates. I still remember being super giddy about the addition of creative mode being finally official.
