@@EvilParagon4 The comment that replied to you is wrong, there is currently no port of the Aether to work with BTA. In fact, as of update 1.7.6, BTA is not compatible with any other mods for Beta 1.7.3. However, BTA does have its own small modding community, and a few mods for vanilla b1.7.3 such as Tropicraft HAVE been ported. As I said before though, the Aether hasn't been ported yet, but there is a skylands dimension planned for later BTA versions.

The take that modern and old minecraft are different experiences is the right one. Modern versions are very 'stuffed' - lots of stuff to to, many adventures to be had, lots of things to run after, lots of big goals to reach. It’s full of extrinsic rewards. Riight up until it very suddenly isn’t. You build, explore, collect, then you kill the dragon, get the wings - and there’s no more rewards and bored out of your skull after you put mending on the wings. It is a _completable_ experience with the option to go endless. Many people, me not excluded, struggle with the 'optionality' of open ended play. I have learned a way to keep my worlds going for a very long time in modern versions - I progress as slowly as I can, and I roleplay as an explorer/builder without a set goal, I have a diary, make maps, I keep a billboard with projects I want to make. I've been on my current hardcore world for over a year now, and I have not been to the nether, I still wear iron armor, and I haven’t enchanted a single thing yet. Retro versions are the opposite - you get a handful of viable building/decoration blocks, capable but not busted toolsets, and zero objectives. You sort of just play. In that setting it feels easier to keep going, as well as it’s easier to restrain yourself from burning out. In the end of the day, I am enjoying both of the minecraft experiences, and I am very glad there’s an easy way to play either.

The fact that they've included the painted planks is also kinda funny as, if I remember correctly, Mojang wanted to implement them in release 1.7, but they decided to add Acacia and Dark Oak instead But overall interesting video! I think chose not to after realizing they would need to also add slabs and stairs for each colored planks which would rapidly fill up the limited Block and Item IDs. The Block and Item ID limit was rectified in 1.13's Flattening but in exchange the performance tanked into the depths of Hell.

Yeah, imo Mojang made a big mistake by tying wood color to wood types but it's super convenient for them since they can just effortlessly push a new wood type every update to keep people satisfied. That's the advantage of it being a fork. People can start taking advantage of things like the increased world height and new direction. I have a bit of a dream of making a Rebirth of the Night-like mod for it. Much more simple than RotN but the same goal of making building more purposeful by including a lot of "tower defense" focused blocks and making mobs very capable of reaching you anyways at specific intervals (right when seasons change, conveniently.)

I personally think the best thing about this mod compared to modern Minecraft is that blocks, materials, etc. all have MULTIPLE USES. You brought up the problem of inventory management issues in this mod, which I agree with. But, there are things you can do with each material where there are fun and interesting ways to address it without just simply limiting the amount of blocks in the game. The one that comes to my head right off the bat is The Trommel block that converts dirt blocks and gravel you have lying around into clay balls, pebbles (which can be used to craft more cobblestone) and other light materials. Sure the pebbles and flint and etc. you get from the Trommel could also contribute to the inventory issue but most times I simply craft more cobble or add to my gunpowder reserve from blocks that would of have just sat in a chest in waiting until a big project or something. Modern Minecraft lacks this, and mostly encourages you to simply hoard blocks for no reason other than there isn't much to do outside of very specific interactions or recipes, and Mojang's solution isn't to add interactable blocks like the Trommel, but rather give you more means to store things (Double chests being able to be placed next to each other after the longest time, Shulker boxes, bundles whenever those get finished, etc.) But yeah, great video! Glad you covered this beautiful mod! Hopefully this gets more people involved and servers start up using it :-)

@recarsion
@recarsion 2 ай бұрын
I also love the trommel block, and another nice thing about it is it uses coal to run so while you can get a lot of great stuff from it it's always a trade off. I'm doing a build right now where I'm having to smelt tons of smooth stone (didn't realize gold tools had silk touch so far) so between that and trommeling a lot, I like how coal is more of a scarce resource that I'm still happy to find dozens of hours into the game as opposed to basically just junk that I don't even bother picking up after a while.

I would suggest if you want to stay on topic, you should take a good look at Vintage Story, a game made by people who used to develop TerraFirmaCraft (a minecraft mod) who didn’t want to be restricted by modding. While I started playing in beta 1.8 and bulk of of my playing time was till release 1.6, I quite enjoyed just caving, collecting resources, planned + expanded my house and farmed. My play was a very crafting table + furnace only style. At some point updates felt more like chunks on top of something complete, in a "look at this new thing that spawns in a completely new biome" that has to be by design not be part of the core gameplay since not everyone spawns there.

One of the reasons why modern mc updates feel so unfulfilling compared to old ones is because Notch added things "randomly" many old items wouldn't exist in modern mc because they don't go by mojangs design "rules", creeper is example of that, notch made a mistake when he was making pig and instead created creeper with pig skin, which he then created a greenish monster skin and thus became creeper. You wouldn't see something like that in new updates. Another reason is that mojang because souless now and everything they add to mc is designed with kids in mind, updates will always be up, some with more content and some will not much content. "Better than adventure" devs don't have nowhere near as much man power as mojang and yet they poured their heart into this mod, are more connected with playerbase than mojang, who just does rebranding as it wishes and even breaks laws by changing EULA... Even if notch is a shitty person (see what I did there) he shouldn't have sold mc to microsoft. While I love modern minecraft and *most* of it's updates, there's no denying that Mojang has grew disconected from it's fans and became almost souless company that's now trying to actively control everything that has word minecraft in it. (examples new EULA, banning mc content on youtube if they don't like something, telling you how you must use word minecraft, banning mods/servers/plugins with guns, frogs and fireflies, chat monitoring etc.)

A few things I’ve seen in this mod do feel abit bloaty? Like a few features here and there that in my mind exhibit the same problem that produced things like the adventure update and especially modern updates to begin with Adding features that are so disconnected from the central mechanics as to bloat the game with unnecessary features. In BTA those are things like painted wood, there’s like a sieve thing and pebbles and all this stuff that isn’t really necessary However it does do a lot right as well. So I’m kind of on the fence with how I feel about the mod. If I ever took up such a project myself I’d do many things differently but probably also take much inspiration I like the concept of replacing enchantment with properties of materials. That’s a cool idea to me. In some ways magic doesn’t fit beta Minecraft, so making it a mundane thing that’s part of the preexisting system instead of creating a whole new non-thematic subsystem makes a lot of sense. I feel like the enchanting system in practice feels like a prerequisite before you can actually do what you want. You need an xp farm so you can get all the enchantments you want so you can go off and do your projects. But in beta people were used to “you can get started on your project as soon as you load in if you want” The constant adding of subsystems and pointless knobs to turn is anathema to the game in this way. I don’t want the way I play to be complicated more and more with each update. I don’t want the game to be telling me directly or indirectly “you have to do this thing” because again it misses the point And when I see BTA do some things that are straying into that territory I fear it becoming what Better than Wolves became over the years. Just as bloated as the modern game but in a different way.

hey, bc! nor really related to the video itself, but I just wanted to say that your content brings an extreme amount of comfiness to my evenings and nights! I really like your approach to video essays and it is just very relaxing but at the same time engaging to listen to you talk about stuff you seem to deeply care about, or at least be very interested in :) your videos proof that modern youtube videos don't have to be extremely loud and fast, that just a dude rambling about stuff could also be enough to entertain. I very happily watch this channel steadily grow and can't wait for new videos! keep up the good work!

As someone who started Minecraft during the beta days but loves what Minecraft has become and enjoys heavily modded Minecraft as well, I can tell BTA would not be for me. But seeing a project like this gain traction has me excited for all you folks out there who *do* enjoy this kind of experience! This video was a very interesting watch, even though I probably won't play BTA myself :)

I didn't think Adventure was a bad idea, but it wasn't executed the best it could be. Minecraft always felt best when it felt like *your* toybox, when you were the only person in a hostile world that you could tame. Villages would have been cool as like a surface level dungeon and rather than being populated by Testificates, it had zombies in the buildings or something. If Better Than Adventure manages to find a way to incorporate the best elements of the Adventure update into Beta Minecraft, then it'll truly be a mod for the ages, because it's almost perfect right now.

Honestly, Minecraft updates for me became very overwhelming as a part-time player who plays the game just once in a uncertain time period. I started to play it at versions 1.4 and after 1.9 the feature set started to rise so rapidly that I don't know what I have to prioritize during normal survival gameplay after you have established with basic resources, yet after the endgame you're being given many overpowered items which may be unclear on how to obtain without scrolling through the guides or just time consuming and frankly doesn't make me feel rewarded after getting them, yet the QoL improvements of modern versions make me feel like older versions are "literally unplayable", or at least uncomfortable when doing regular stuff. Playing Beta and BTA reminded me of playing the Pocket edition 0.5.X back in the day which is the most enjoying experience of Minecraft I've ever had yet it's not limited to the world size and has some own additions to the game and I finally kinda enjoyed playing Minecraft after a long while

I think we're handily at the point that playing these different versions is a lot more like playing a game and its sequel than the same game. We can appreciate some choices, disagree with others, but ultimately be overjoyed that we get two fantastic games to play depending on the mood we're in. Everything I've heard about BTA has been pretty awesome, so I can't wait to give it a try myself.

The way the armor types and tool tiers are implemented are such unique and creative ways to make the game interesting and fun. It allows players to utilize almost all types of tools and armor and not just stick to the most durable like in vanilla minecraft. I also absolutely love how color grading and bloom are implemented!

I’m surprised they haven’t added more golems or tried to add more crop varieties into the game. Kinda feels like they’re adding in half baked mechanics and then moving onto the next half baked mechanic. I like modern Minecraft but modern Minecraft lacks a lot of fluidity compared to older versions.

This confuses me. They hated the new features like enchanting enough that they created their own fork of the game, only to end up adding... reflavored enchanting-like features? They hated how un-minecrafty the adventure update felt, but they went on to add things like handcannons and shaders? It feels like they became the very thing they sought to 'correct'. I have a feeling if any of the features they later added with this mod were originally added by the vanilla adventure update, they would be vehemently opposed to them.
@sprousprou
@sprousprou Жыл бұрын
A lot of additions are similar to modern ones, but different in a lot of key ways. For example, with enchanting, they didn’t like how enchanting was handled, not that different tools could get different effects. They didn’t like the magic theming and how every tool could get every effect on it at once, not requiring you to use different tools for different situations as with BTA’s tools only having one effect specifically. There’s also a lot of ways that what “un-Minecrafty” means has changed over the years, like how the handcannons fit right in with BTA, but would be very out of place in modern Minecraft.
@binguschondo
@binguschondo Жыл бұрын
i think that’s an interesting point! i suppose the answer would be in execution rather than idea. for me, i personally like how overlapped features are handled more in this mod. it feels, to me, that they fit the context of beta minecraft really well. which - obviously, is the goal lol. it’s definitely up to personal preference, though! when it comes to the enchantments specifically, i think it’s interesting that they manage to put in these mechanics without introducing many new systems. with the modern game, to have enchanting, you need experience and leveling, but here, it’s a more direct approach that plays off of what the game already has, rather than bringing in something new. for people who find the modern game too busy, introducing these concepts in a more immediate way is likely preferable.

Y'know, as I was watching that section about Better than Wolves (the warning to Notch about including wolves in particular), something occurred to me. From what I understood, the issue that FlowerChild had was about pets, their inclusion and how difficult and time-consuming it would be to create proper AI for them so that they do not feel intrusive to the player but also simultaneously provide entertainment and interest with their behaviors. What jumped out at me was that these issues weren't about wolves specifically, which makes me wonder... why not make Better Wolves? As in, a kind of hostile mob that appears in packs and will attack the player if they approach, but could be bribed by tossing bones or food (specifically kinds of meat) to become neutral while they're occupied and perhaps for a little while thereafter (sort of a grace period so that players aren't getting swarmed every few minutes by the same pack of wolves that they just fed). That way, the wolves would act as a genuine obstacle to the player, either through being a dangerous hostile mob that appears in packs and can easily swarm an unprepared player OR through forcing players to give up valuable healing items or resources in order to avoid a confrontation. In other words, adding to the core gameplay experience of exploration, hence justifying their inclusion.

I kinda want a mod that emulates the game's updates as if we were back in 2010. Like you're playing alpha X.X.X and you get a notification that notch just released the next update and given the choice to update when you next boot up Minecraft. These updates would be at some pace based on your playthrough time or something. If you get too bored, a button that says "take a break until the next update" that would skip to the next update immediately. I want this because I want to play Minecraft as it was being made, building up the knowledge with every changelog. Also the skip button would let you skip the 1.9 gap

I've never been a fan of modern Minecraft. I tried getting back into it recently and was horrified to learn just how excited people were for 1.20. The biggest features were pink wood and a mob that does nothing. People waited a year for that and were excited for it. It's become obvious that Minecraft left people like me behind.

I didn't like the direction that Minecraft originally went, but it was actually because I didn't think that they went hard enough on the RPG feel. Basically, they should have basically stayed away from RPG elements entirely or went all in early on more so than they ever did in the base game so it didn't feel out of place or half baked. I would have actually liked to see more true RPG elements. Here's a list of ideas I had for a path like this: A better less intrusive hunger implementation which still determines whether or not you can regenerate but is independent from how much health is actually regenerated (basically only time and action based). The total elimination of the cursed stack system entirely in favor of a capacity/weight based one because "inventory clutter" is annoying, but there still should be some limitations. Weapon and tool proficiencies by character instead of enchantments on tools allowing greater tool customization based on player preference or play style. Actual leveling with various stats and combat classes. More varied monster types and difficulties. Real weapon and armor customization with a skill based smithing system, again allowing more player freedom for their specific classes or needs. Seasons with dynamic temperature mechanics complete with unique items, events, and enemies. Making game progression boss based with the world dynamically responding to the defeating of those bosses by unlocking more challenging areas, dimensions, events, and even stronger bosses to try to defeat.

This mod is extremely fun. I've been playing it and it makes for a really fun Alternate universe. I grew up with versions like 1.6 and 1.7 (my first was pocket edition lite) so I can't say I agree with some of the mentality people have surrounding the mod, but it's still really fun regardless.
