In this video I use the Minelab Equinox to demonstrate the difference between a trashy signal, and a signal that is worth investigating further.
If you can learn how to identify a trashy signal, then you can spend more time digging the good ones!
I'll show you a few tips and tricks I've learned along the way to make your time detecting more successful, so watch until the end so you don't miss anything!

If you'd like to help my channel grow so I can make more useful content for our detecting community, please leave me a tip! I'd be most appreciative if you did!

Really great vid with explanations and demonstrations. While watching I was the classic armchair detectorist making a guess at what the targets were likely to be!

Plenty of trash BUT towards the end of the hunt the percentage of ‘treasure’ went up significantly. Just gotta learn the machine - customization of my 800 is right around the corner.

That’s the key! Learn to trust the machine - listen to the tones more than watching the Target IDs - you’ll soon learn the good tones from the others…

Thank you. Part of learning detecting in the 21st century is reading and watching videos and the other is from going out and experiencing it for yourself. I spent 20 minutes digging up rocks the size of half loaves of bread and sand in a pretty heavily flowing river just to find a beer can 10 inches deep in 40C heat. If I had switched to all metal mode I'm sure I could have avoided it. Objects do seem to give more erratic signals in rivers though.

Yes, some locations will always be challenging, and that one sounds difficult! I definitely agree that you can only learn so much by watching - the majority of your learning comes from doing. Good luck out there!

M8 couple of years ago brought a Nox800, sold it, weeks later stumbled across a gold coin program, that gave me a "DOH" moment. This year I decided to research into numbers etc. Still researching, found you in KZbin land, you have absolutely the best explanation to not only the numbers of different coins, but your take on trash etc. Needless to say I am now hunting for a replacement 800, I am in Brissy checking out the ad's for a second hand 800, being sold by someone who also was like me and didn't learn the machines scalability.

Thanks for your comment Graham. The beauty of the Equinox 800 is that it can be a turn on and go machine, or a completely customisable machine if you’re willing to learn it and but some time in. Good luck with your hunting!

Thanks for the video. I have not been out as much as you testing and hunting, but I have found the more consistent the numbers, and those solid tones, the greater the chances of being a good target. You just reinforced that. Thanks again, Harold

Some simple, but very effective tips here.. these can save you loads of time in the field, and will certainly be using them next time. It's weird how similar the numbers are with Uk coins.. 16=20p coin, 18 =50p coin, 22=£1 coin nine times out of 10. Once again, really enjoy your channel. Thank you. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. Phil.. Uk

Thanks Phil. Yes, it is interesting how the VDI's read very similar - I'd assumed they'd be very different, but they must be made with a similar copper/nickel mix.

Interesting and informative video, thank you. Loads of handy little tips in it. Still transitioning from my trusty old Whites DFX. The Nox 800 is not the easiest of machines to get used to by far, but then again nor was the DFX when that was new. So will watch your video at least a few more times yet. AT LEAST !

Thanks for sharing that. Here in the UK I’ve been digging a fair amount of trash of late, so your video was really useful to me. I now feel that I’ll be able to reduce the time I spend digging unproductive holes - and so find more of the good stuff! In the meantime, I wish you the best of luck out on those Aussie fields…..👍

Thanks for these tips! I don't see many others teaching about trash signals. I didn't know anything about lifting the coil to get an idea of the size of the trash... I've had an eq 800 for about 2 years now and I'm still a rank beginner (no time to detect in my schedule...). Thanks again! 👍

Great demonstrations of tips to evaluate targets. I like how you show the coil and screen simultaneously. I also appreciate your “thinking out loud” style. Could you explain the “why” of the double bump? Thanks for another fine video!
@MrDoccus

*Double bounce
@coilsandcoinsdetecting
@coilsandcoinsdetecting 2 жыл бұрын
The double-bounce tone is caused by the DD coil arrangement, with two separate, distinct sounds as each side of the coil goes over the shallow target. When a target is very shallow, and of a certain density, it results in this double sounding tone. Shallow targets that don’t produce this double tone are often less dense (trash), or deeper large targets like cans etc.

Really interesting video! A lot will depend knowing what the ground is likely to produce...I am in the UK, and I can guaranty if you over analysis signals you will miss good artifacts...Last year I dug a really horrible 17/18/19 signal that had traces of iron to it as well. It wasn't a "big" signal but was fairly deep at around 15", but it turned out to be a Roman terret ring ( rein guide off a chariot). I was fully expecting it to be deep iron scrap so was astounded when that came up...This year on a different permission I had never dug anything other than old lead, and a little modern trash, I got a good signal of 11/12.... I was fully expecting it to be a bit of ali or maybe a small button, and out popped a silver hammered penny from 1380ish!. Now these are the exceptions obviously, but I could have easily missed them as I was certain they were rubbish....I do use the pin pointing tip and the raising the coil as I feel the percentages are good this will help me spot iron scrap...One quick question, I have noticed that sometimes the TDI of a target will be radically different to that in Field 1 mode...I have not been able o draw any conclusions yet as to what this indicates and wondered if you have any thoughts?
@coilsandcoinsdetecting
@coilsandcoinsdetecting 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. Congratulations on finding such amazing treasures! I imagine detecting in the UK would require an entirely different approach to low TDI targets, given the history and the types of metal that was used for coins and relics hundreds of years ago. Being in Australia, our history only goes back a bit over 200 years or so - If only the Romans and other early cultures had visited, what a detectorists paradise it would be! You’re absolutely right when you say it really depends on where you’re detecting, and the likelihood of finding those older (low TDI) targets that may well be treasure! To me, if the target sounds interesting, then I’m going to dig it! Good luck out there!

@@coilsandcoinsdetecting I know that was the saying in the back of my head just before I found the Roman dog hoard .but when your on a roman site it's littered with these signals, like 3 or 4 in 1 swing lol

Love ya videos mate Wouldn't it be just better to discriminate out 15 16 17 I no 50% silver threepences come up in that range
@coilsandcoinsdetecting
@coilsandcoinsdetecting 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, can definitely do that, and I’ve done it in the past. I guess the issue is that the more we discriminate out, the higher the chance of missing a good target. It also depends on the site, and sometimes there’s just too much modern junk to leave 15,16,17 enabled…

Go in to Settings by pressing the Cog button, then move across to Recovery Speed by pressing the cog button repeatedly until go get to it. When you are on the Recovery Speed menu, hold down the Cog button to go in to Advanced Settings. You then press the accept/reject button to toggle between FE AND F2. Only the setting you’re on applies (they don’t both work at the same time)
