In the Navy, I used a 6" adjustable wrench on a key chain for millions of things most of them not really approved by the DOD, however a bottle opener is one trick I missed, thanks for the tip, I heard that some companies are going to start using glass bottles again so may come in handy if I don't have a swiss army or another pocket knife in the near future.

Excellent video! This is one of my new favorite channels. When I was a kid in the 80s I started building "kits" naturally. Rediscovered the hobby as of late and discovered your channel when researching the Max. pocket phatty a few months ago. Totally gave me great ideas! As a former diesel mechanic and now someone that works on lab instruments I have tools from big to small, this channel gives me ideas for assembling kits according to scale. I love it. Nice work!

Good video. If you put a bevel on the end of that handle, you'd have a nice pry bar as well, and maybe a chisel, if you could put that rubber back on the end so it doesn't dig into your hand while using the wrench side. Maybe even file a "V" into the end for a nail puller?? Keep up the great work.

A lengthwise slit with 120° top angle or a 1 - 1.5 mm hole drilled in the split line of the jaws will allow to clamp a tool bit on the ridges and thus keep it from tilting when mounted in screwdriver position. I have a bike tool spanner wrench wit this option and it works great - also with the smaller bits and the flat Leatherman type ones.

Hi. I have done the same, for my edc bag, not a tin. If you slide a piece of 1/2inch pvc pipe over the handle, flatten it with heat gun but so it still slides you can nearly double the length and torque without adding much size. Good health and stay safe.

I found a 1/4 - 5/16 ratchet a Home Depot it was part of a socket / bit driver for $13.00ish I use it almost every day at work it might make a good addition to your kit just cut off the 5/16 end. The nice thing about the Husky rachet it has a offset handle so you don't scrape your knuckles. You are very clever in making your micro edc kits.

I order to get more torque out it, you could use a 3in lenght PVC pipe, molded to the end of your wrench. Not fixed though, in a removable format, a removable extra-handle, place along side within the altoids tin box. Whenever you install it, it will provide a longer leverage/handle.

A pleasure as always, the only problem with adjustables is that the gearing is usually too loose on the nut because you don't have stops. Putting on a nice mannered nut with one is usually ok, but removing a stubborn one can be nearly impossible. The smaller the wrench, the greater the problem. I think a better alternative are miniature locking pliers.
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
One thing that helps is making it a point to only rotate the adjustable wrench in the direction where the friction from the nut jams the wrench's movable jaw inward towards the tool's rail, rather than pulling it away, so it gets a firm seating. That's why in this video I referred to how I used the wrench as being "flipped" around (from the ideal way) 3:51. . . I was concentrating on giving the camera a clear view of what I was doing, and other things, rather than using the tool properly. he-he

The mini vise grips are also good as they can be used to adjust or tighten most things plus you can lock screwdriver bits and little saw blades in them or use them as a clamp etc. I got a really small 4" set.

Should anyone be interested, I have evaluated a small 4 inch set of vise grips I believe to be clones of the Irwin 4WR and can report that unfortunately they can't be modified to fit an Altoids tin, squarely, without crippling their usefulness. They are a little over 4 inches long and Altoids tins are 3.5 inches. . . .They are a great tool though so the search for a good 4+ inch tin now begins! :) MUHAHA

Thanks for the suggestion. I show how the little 4 inch vise grip will almost fit if the tin was just a tad longer in my next video which I'll post in the next couple of days, or so. My goal is a universal tool tin, carrying predominantly full hand grip tools not little keychain tools you grip with just your finger tips [like a Leatherman PS4] which one could easily wear in say the breast pocket of a business suit or men's dress shirt.

Hi from England I have 3 of the same little multitools from your video, I carried the one below the wallet ninja for a year and never used it for anything I use my gerber dime nearly every day, the package opener, scissors and bottle opener are all used regularly, i love the design of the pliers but almost never use them and I find the little knife and file to be unnecessary I think It would be interesting to keep a record over a month of what tools you actually use and what is essentially dead weight, I think people carry a lot of duplicated unused items, multiple screwdrivers, multitools, little blades etc Surely the aim of an edc is to carry what is useful and not a collection of multiple versions of not very good or useful tools. You could include a tube in the kit to slip over the end of the handle for leverage as you would with a pipe on a bigger spanner.
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
That makes perfect sense although if you were to see my actual kit, which will be shown in an upcoming video I post, you would see that within the tiny compartment of an Altoids tin there is no room for one as well as the other things I pack, a complete, albeit bare bone tool box. I agree adding an extension would make sense for many other users though if one could be concocted which was strong, solid, reliable, and safely would not slip in use.
@eachday95387 жыл бұрын
MeZillch I wonder if one of those waterproof titanium tubes that are popular for carrying gear in pockets would work. Perhaps an option if both kits were handy. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with in your Altoids tin.
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
Yes, not sure if any of the existing ones out there happen to be the right size but I like your idea. My interest in mini kit tools skyrockets when they have multi functions: It's both a storage tube and then, in a pinch, you empty it out and use it as an extension arm! Great idea.

There was one thing I noticed when you were using your little adjustable wrench to tighten a nut on your exercise equipment. You had the wrench on the nut the wrong way. Your way puts a lot of pressure on the adjustable portion of the wrench which increases the chance for failure.
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
True, and I was aware of this, which is why i pointed out at 3:52 that my use of the wrench was flipped over. It was just meant as a demo that this little tin sized wrench can do the largest nut that exists in my home, besides plumbing.
@fatfox67067 жыл бұрын
great ideas! May use on my next bike trip. If you use a small peice of half inch copper tubing slid over your wrench handle it will give you more torque. Peace!
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
If said extension slides over the handle when not in use then it would need to be about 2 inch (5cm) long to still fit in the tin and when in use the necessary overlap would make its effective length more like 1 to 1.5 inches. Hardly worth the added tin space it consumes, IMHO, considering my existing tool already has more torque than any other tin sized pocket wrench such as the dozen or so shown here 0:13Sure, if tin space was infinite and I didn't store anything else in it except this wrench, plus added extensions to improve its performance, then this idea, many have suggested, would make sense, but as I mention at the beginning this is a balancing act of functionality vs COMPACTness because I need to store an entire tool kit in this tin, not just the wrench, as I will show in an upcoming video. Thanks for mentioning your idea though.
@LilBlighter7 жыл бұрын
Also, if you drill a large enough hole in the end of the handles, you can fit the second spanner into the first and you've got twice the leverage.

I’ve always found adjustable wrenches especially the inexpensive ones in your video to be excellent for rounding off the corners of any nut you care to use them on. The problem is the amount of play in the jaws that the adjustable mechanism allows You could simply modify the fixr tool to be open rather than closed by cutting away the side opposite the spring clip so that both sides match, the curved part serves no real purpose, or even by simply removing the spring clip altogether
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for mentioning the Fixr. I'll take a closer look at it for modification. Mini adj wrenches have markedly less play and therefore are much less likely to round a nut if you specifically make it a point to rotate them in only one direction: THE OPPOSITE ONE THAT I SHOW IN THE VIDEO [Oops, hence why I mentioned in the text I was using the wrench "flipped" around]. Basically one direction causes friction which pulls the sliding jaw away from the main body [bad, it exacerbates the play/slop] whereas the other rotational direction jams the same moving part AGAINST the sled so it is more firmly and squarely seated making it less prone to wiggle: content.artofmanliness.com/uploads/2013/03/howtocrescent.jpg

My 4" crescent will go up to 17mm which makes it 10X more useful. I modded the jaws by grinding the parallels to open wider, and I cut in another tooth on the adjustable jaw. I bought a Pocket Wrench 2 a few yrs ago after watching one of your vids and I love that thing! I use it all the time. I wish they would release an open ended V3 design! I wonder if the current version could be DIY modified. Could u work ur genius and find out?
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
Closed designs are tougher and stronger, inherently, because of the full continuous circular design. This means they can be thinner and lighter at the cost of not being able to address nuts/bolts from the side. If you take a closed design, like the Pocket Wrench 2, and saw off one side of the circle to make it open it probably would work fine for smaller nuts under lighter loads but for larger nuts or heavy loads you might end up bending the arms of the tool. An interesting idea though.Also the PW2 is a tad different than the others in that it sort of bites into the nut a bit, instead of being held between two flat areas, so over time it mangles the nut. You probably wouldn't care much if used just once or twice but if it is a nut that needs to be reused over and over again it would eventually mangle it.
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
OK I did it and gave you a shout out for the idea. It worked out great and I was wrong to worry the tool would lose strength. IT IS ROCK SOLID. Thanks for your help! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGTIk4aEjrmrjNE

Gr8 Idea boss . Can you do this with "VISE-GRIP " ??
@MeZillch7 жыл бұрын
My examination of my "Task Force" 4 inch, curved jaw locking jaw pliers [just like an Irwin vise grip] indicates the answer is "No, it can't be sawed down to maintain full functionality and made to fit in an Altoids tin, at least sitting squarely". However if fitting in an Altoids tin diagonally was of value, it might be possible, but this greatly reduces the tin's capacity to hold other items, plus you'd have to annoying unscrew the thumb screw adjustment knob and remove it to store it on the side each time you loaded the kit. Yuck. . . . A good tool though!

If you cut a slot the size of the bit in the handle you could store the bit there and hold it in place with the insulation cover. Also ,I'm sure you did, but did you check to see if the wrench would fit in the Altoid tin on the diagonal ?
@MeZillch3 жыл бұрын
The problem is diagonally placed objects such as a wrench in an Altoids tin then blocks any other full length objects from fitting in so that's a no-go from my perspective. I like your bit idea but I only own simple hand tools and no Dremel or anything like that. Thanks though.

Ha! Yes, it can be done, but the arm length would so small that the rotary torque one could apply would be weak and only appropriate for smaller nuts. Then again, many of the premade wrenches only address smaller nuts anyways and have limited torque capabilities from the get go. One of the reasons I like the idea of using an Altoids tin size is because the tools made for it can theoretically have a full, four finger grip so you can apply maximal human force to the job at hand.

I don't even drink beer/soda (rarely) so to film this scene I had to purposefully go out and buy a bottle! You are right. It is some kind of weird guy-thing that every single pocket tool has to have a bottle opener. I also sometimes suggest cutting off the wine corkscrew on Swiss army knives (to save width or add some other tool) and commenters online have heart attacks: "NOOOO!"
