On-board diagnostics (OBD) is an automotive term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. OBD systems give the vehicle owner or repair technician access to the status of the various vehicle subsystems. The amount of diagnostic information available via OBD has varied widely since its introduction in the early 1980s versions of on-board vehicle computers. Early versions of OBD would simply illuminate a malfunction indicator light or "idiot light" if a problem was detected but would not provide any information as to the nature of the problem. Modern OBD implementations use a standardized digital communications port to provide real-time data in addition to a standardized series of diagnostic trouble codes, or DTCs, which allow one to rapidly identify and remedy malfunctions within the vehicle.
OBD-II is an improvement over OBD-I in both capability and standardization. The OBD-II standard specifies the type of diagnostic connector and its pinout, the electrical signalling protocols available, and the messaging format. It also provides a candidate list of vehicle parameters to monitor along with how to encode the data for each. There is a pin in the connector that provides power for the scan tool from the vehicle battery, which eliminates the need to connect a scan tool to a power source separately. However, some technicians might still connect the scan tool to an auxiliary power source to protect data in the unusual event that a vehicle experiences a loss of electrical power due to a malfunction. Finally, the OBD-II standard provides list of standardized DTCs. As a result of this standardization, a single device can query the on-board computer(s) for these parameters in any vehicle. OBD-II standardization was prompted to simplify diagnosis of increasingly complicated emissions equipment, and though only emission-related codes and data are required to be transmitted through it according to U.S. legislation, most manufacturers have made the OBD-II Data Link Connector the main connector in the vehicle through which all systems are diagnosed and reprogrammed. OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes are 4-digit, preceded by a letter: P for engine and transmission (powertrain), B for body, C for chassis, and U for network. Manufacturers may also add custom data parameters to their specific OBD-II implementation, including real-time data requests as well as trouble codes.

yeah!! thank you! This the best video. I purchased the scanner in Amazon $19 only. You should get Amazon commission $$) I followed your instructions and it works. I watched another videos and I was getting annoying because too complicated. Of course English is my second language so I was thinking by saying turn the ignition on was to start up the car lol 😂 so I did it and my code was P053a , I have a mini cooper countryman 2011. Worked for my 2011 mini cooper s convertible! A shop wanted to charge me $325 for swap set of spark plugs and an ignition coil. Helllll nah. I did it myself and didn't want to go back to the shop just for them to reset it for me and try to upsell me for something I can do by myself. Thank you!

Just write down the codes and after it happens s 2 or 3 times it maybe time to fix. Some of these codes will have no to little effect on your vehicle but are used for emissions. Depending on where (state) you in live this can be a big issue when it comes time to renew your license plates.

On. 2010 + vehicles you can't simply clear the issue. What silly code are you referring to? Is is a permanent code? Please check the smog tips play list for info about this issue on 2010 and newer vehicles

Hi, I have a problem with my Mini Cooper s r56 not start. The mini was on taking it out of the garage when it suddenly turned off. The first Scanner have these codes: 2781 2775 2D52 *2DCA* 275F 272F I changed 4 spark plugs, 4 coils, the Camshaft Position Sensor and a new battery. But it did not turn on, now it is giving these codes: 005E31 009314 *00A0B4* 00932D 009CB5 I deleted them and it only gives me this code: ( A0B4 ) The mini starter good but not start. I try the new battery and it says it's ok, but when I test the battery with the terminals mounted on the Mini Cooper it says it's bad I don’t now why. I also reset the new battery in the mini system with the scanner but nothing. Honestly, this situation is driving me crazy since the mini is in the garage and I need to get it out to get a jeep behind it. If I take out the mini I won't be able to enter it again because the garage is elevated. What do you think?

I have a 2010 mini cooper convertible and i barely drove my car for like 3 months due to shut down for COVID 19 pandemic. Now i'm driving it to work which is barely a couple miles from my house and now i'm getting this engine light on. It's yellow and it came on, went off, then came back on. Should I really be worried something is wrong with my engine? I barely drove it! It seems this damn light keeps coming on all the time. I want to get this tool to turn it off but just am afraid i'll be hiding a real problem. There are no other issues i've had with the car.

I very much enjoyed your video and I learned how to use my OBD Reader. 3 codes come up which are POO15,- (Freeze Frame on reader), but on app ( Exhaust camshaft position timing over retarded bank 1 ) P2187 - System to lean at idle bank 1, POO442 -Evaporative emission system leak detected - small leak. I am willing to fix it myself, I've never fixed a car before. Are there any suggestions you can give me before I give it a go? Can you tell me about how much money I will be spending? Do you suggest I take it to a mechanic Because it's not possible to fix it by myself? I value your professional opinion and thank you for taking a time to read my post. Hope to hear back from you.

Reset and see what codes pop back up. Then attack each code in the order then pop up. Leave the evap for last.
