Hi Scotty. That "dumb" idler pulley/friction wheel is there to help make the Cooper fuel efficient. Unlike most cars, it allows for the water pump to be disengaged when not in use (so that the car is using energy powering a pump unnecessarily). I think that by necessity, making cars more fuel efficient involves complicating their designs somewhat. I think that Mini is generally marketed to a crowd who want something fun, cute and relatively peppy, which being fuel efficient. But I'm not denying that they're generally terribly unreliable and a nuisance to work on (I've owned one).

I disagree to a certain extent. Love my R56. I have a KZbin mechanic certification (HAHAHA) and I Changed the water pump and belt in about an hour. And the Timing chain and guide is one assembly that can easily be changed from the top of the motor. I agree with you when it comes to the plastic. My plastic water pump cracked when the belt snapped. I replaced it with a metal one for $50. The engine is designed so that minimal space is taken up allowing for the engine bay to be smaller and the cabin to be larger. These things are incredibly fun to drive and I don’t regretting purchasing one for a minute.

Scotty, your comment regarding the MG car company's choice of batteries for the MGB till '74 was uninformed and rather offensive. The REAL reason for the twin 6 volt Group 17HF batteries was weight balance. The MGB was designed (in the early 60's) to have 50/50 frt - rear weight distribution w/ driver, and the then - available heavy tar-case 12V batteries upset this no matter where the designers tried to place them. It was decided to fit twin 6V under the rear shelf close as possible to the car's center. By 1975 modern lighter batteries made the twin installation obsolete and they fitted a single Group 24. Please don't slam MG for bad engineering; they knew what the hell they were doing. I own a '72 MGB GT that does 10K mi per yr no probs, and more MGs survive today than any other classic brand ... educate yourself a bit please.

What! Doesn’t get out of its way? I have a S auto with paddle shift. Like a racing go cart . Not my favorite ride but I enjoy it. It is a tight fit at engine bay. Thought you would of said something about the thermostat housing and cross pipe. Anyone with a mini in mid miles knows about this. Very solid car in my opinion. Key is maintenance !!

I have a 2013 Mini Cooper S with 63k miles. Runs great and is a lot of fun to drive. Thats a 2010 mini in the video, thats a bad year to get.

I just changed the serpentine belt on our 2013 Hyundai Accent. I loosened 3 bolts- 2 on the alternator and 1 was an adjuster. It took me all of 10 minutes. The alternator is on the top right of engine, it was so easy.

The new minis from 2014 - present are good cars. And have very good reliability

Yes they do! I'm on my 4th, trade them in when they break 150k miles. My new Clubman s is awesome

Good to know Rob. We have a 2007 S and were considering a new one. However, the thing rides so roughly over bumps that we are quite hesitant. We live in the Midwest and there are bumps and potholes aplenty!

@@isaacandmary Definitely do it! We are saving to buy a new mini. As a child, my mom had an 07 base and it was so bad! The new ones are noticeably better. We were blown away at quality and reliability improvements.

No lie: extended warranty paid over $20,000 in repairs in a little over 4 years. I sold it with 8 months of warranty remaining because it was so unreliable. Super fun to drive when youre not in a rental. List of repairs: 2 soft tops ($5500 each) Timing chain $4000 Cpu $3000 Rotor changes (cannot just replace the pads) 4*$400= $1600 (once wvery 2-3 yrs) I can keep going!

$4000 timing chain? WTH? Besides, it's a chain, it's supposed to last!

@@c.j.rogers2422 it's $9000 for a transmission . So, why does it seem odd that to take the engine appart is that much? There always a known issue with the chain tensioner (plastic part). Look it up. There was a major law suit
