My 2007 Civic is a pretty good car, it's the paint, it's recall, and the dealers bad repaint that is the only real problem. When I took it back to the dealer for peeling clear coat on the roof the manager told be it looks like something fell on it, like acorns. Nope, it's bad surface prep from when YOU repainted it.

@@simonipswich ... I don't know, I live in the UK, and the classifieds are stacked with broken Mini's with multiple major faults - these being shot gearboxes, blown head gaskets, stuffed suspension and electrical gremlins. They drive like a go-kart when they're going strong, yet cost the earth when something breaks. The thing is, I buy them broken, fix them and sell them for a nice profit. Sometimes I even get to buy back the car cheap I sold that I previously profited. It seems people want to look a certain way, and be damned the price it costs to own a Mini logo. The major feature of the belt on the Mini is that the access is so poor that they break through lack of maintenance because the type of people that own them think that cool cars don't break. What then happens is a domino effect where the car blows its head gasket through lack of a water pump way before the battery runs out of power without an alternator to charge it - all of them driven off that belt - and that's where I come in - I've repaired dozens and dozens of head gaskets on Minis to the point I could practically do them blindfold ... a very profitable, dumbly designed piece of lousy engineering for people who want to look cool broken down at the side of the road ...

A pipe connected to the valve of the spare wheel which has to be pumped up to about 80 p.s.i. So when you run out of air pressure for the washers you also have a flat spare wheel..

In its day the original Mini was regarded as pretty tricky to work on too, because there wasn't much room around the engine. Back then, cars had engine bays you could stand in while you worked;) Also had its fair share of problems, mostly down to Lucas 'Prince of Darkness' electrics and rusty subframes. But unlike the new MINI, they were at least cheap to fix.

I bought a 2010 Mini in 2019 because it is small, as am I, and responsive; but after five years of expensive and unexpected repairs and maintenance, I have absolutely no confidence in it. I only drive it locally so when it breaks down, towing is only local. For a trip, I go to Enterprise. The Mini is still "fun" to drive but I see no alternative, especially now, 2024, that all cars are unbelievably expensive. I am in my 81st year, still driving, and have had over two dozen vehicles, and the Mini is truly, like a boat, the hole (in the ocean) into which money is thrown (lavishly)

I love my mini (I found this video researching a potential new mini because I need All4). This guy is bagging on the Mini without knowing why Minis are the way they are (and not aware that the "R"-word is not a word to still use). Those two things is why I kind of invalidated everything he said. For those that don't know: Mini's were made to be good in the small streets in London, but also maintain room to accommodate four people comfortably. To do that, they turned the engine sideways and revolutionized front wheel drive, which is why the engine is a bit more "difficult" for American mechanics. Every time a new person gets in my car they are surprised by the space.

The MGB used two six volt batteries down low just in front of the rear axle, for weight distribution. That was good. The carriers rusted and the batteries fell out. That was bad.

Had my MGB for 45 years and still going strong. Batteries have improved a lot since I bought it so now a single 12 volt battery fits in where one of the 6 volt units sat. Where the other was now makes a nice storage compartment hidden away where I keep tools and things.

He has a point. Just bought a 2003 cooper S. It has a supercharger. 6 speed. Got it fairly cheap. Had to replace the catalytic converter, timing chain, serp belt, tensioner ect. New tires, alignment. Now she runs nice. Just recently started hearing a pinging sound like rocks hitting the hood. Not sure what it is. I’m told it needs new struts and mounts as well. Mini is 2003 6 speed and 81k miles. We knew it needed some work but it can get pricey.

Hi Scotty. That "dumb" idler pulley/friction wheel is there to help make the Cooper fuel efficient. Unlike most cars, it allows for the water pump to be disengaged when not in use (so that the car is using energy powering a pump unnecessarily). I think that by necessity, making cars more fuel efficient involves complicating their designs somewhat. I think that Mini is generally marketed to a crowd who want something fun, cute and relatively peppy, which being fuel efficient. But I'm not denying that they're generally terribly unreliable and a nuisance to work on (I've owned one).

I don't know where this "unreliable" thing comes from. But, yeah. Working on them is a challenge. Small spaces, and time spent moving parts out of the way so that you can get to other parts.

I disagree to a certain extent. Love my R56. I have a KZbin mechanic certification (HAHAHA) and I Changed the water pump and belt in about an hour. And the Timing chain and guide is one assembly that can easily be changed from the top of the motor. I agree with you when it comes to the plastic. My plastic water pump cracked when the belt snapped. I replaced it with a metal one for $50. The engine is designed so that minimal space is taken up allowing for the engine bay to be smaller and the cabin to be larger. These things are incredibly fun to drive and I don’t regretting purchasing one for a minute.

I drive a 2016 5 doors MINI. Every time i drive it's joy like the first day. It has a great driving feeling, and mine it's not a sporty version. In over 6 years of use, the only problem i got was the loss of some noise insulation material under the hood. It has been eaten by a rat. Also being tiny isn't an issue, for me is one of the main reasons i bought it. In a World full of boring SUV, the MINI is your little pill for happiness.

Scotty, your comment regarding the MG car company's choice of batteries for the MGB till '74 was uninformed and rather offensive. The REAL reason for the twin 6 volt Group 17HF batteries was weight balance. The MGB was designed (in the early 60's) to have 50/50 frt - rear weight distribution w/ driver, and the then - available heavy tar-case 12V batteries upset this no matter where the designers tried to place them. It was decided to fit twin 6V under the rear shelf close as possible to the car's center. By 1975 modern lighter batteries made the twin installation obsolete and they fitted a single Group 24. Please don't slam MG for bad engineering; they knew what the hell they were doing. I own a '72 MGB GT that does 10K mi per yr no probs, and more MGs survive today than any other classic brand ... educate yourself a bit please.
