Mini Cooper S Cruise with 3" Straight Pipe

Short cruise in my R53. 3" straight pipe all the way back. No mufflers. Cold start.

2002-2006 Mini Cooper S's where supercharged. 2007-present Cooper S's are turbocharged. It may seem trivial, but the difference between how they build/hold boost are significant. The 2 generations also have completely different engines.

@go kart I had it like this for a week. Now I have a custom resonator on there and it softened it up quite a bit. As compared to other exhausts it is definitely louder than any on the market. It backfires harder too. Also, the resonator is on a quick release system so if I want to swap in a test pipe or even a bigger muffler I can do so on the fly.

What I mean is, it's not supposed to sound like anti lag. Backfiring from a straight pipe is completely different than anti lag and most people that know cars can understand the difference. No one is pretending to have anti lag.

I do have the stock catalytic converter actually. This is just a simple cat back. It's definitely loud but much quieter with the resonator.

Can't decide between 63.5mm or 70mm exhaust pipes. anybody help? Currently just a scorpion replica but with 63.5mm pipes instead of 60mm. The rest is stock (57.5mm). Stock cats stock headers, stock everything. The car is daily and don't want obnoxious loud, just power gains if possible. Cheers.

In stock form it has a slight tendency to understeer like most fwd vehicles, yet it is very balanced. With an addition of a larger rear sway bar any understeer is basically dialed out. The car now has a tendency to overseer when pushed beyond its limits. Of course your alignment has a lot to do with that as well.

Is the exhaust setup you ran in this vid able to pass the German regulations? People here are very strict when it comes to modifying exhausts.. Or would you say a valvetronic exhaust would also do if i keep the stock res's in and take out the steel-wool inside them..? Absolutely admire your past as well as current mini man!

Thanks for the support! I am unfamiliar with German regulations, are they emissions based or do you have decibel restrictions as well? The set up in this video passes New York state emissions inspection due to having both stock cats installed. If your inspection is similar to the N.Y. standards then I wouldn't worry about it. my current catless exhaust takes some "magic" to pass but it is possible.

As far as I am aware of the maximum amount of decibel allowed for a non-oldtimer is 97 dB. But even for that you need a certificate from the producer telling the state ist is safe to be mounted on your vehicle.. Those are some bullshit laws ;( Now I know you had most of your work done by Filthy Habits, would you recommend them before any similar Mini tuners? Oh and you should bring that Mini of yours over here to the Nürburgring!!

I love it. I've owned two 2005 R53's and they've both been very reliable. Post facelift is key for many reasons. I would be very confident in a 70k R53.

I am fully catless now and I'll never go back haha. It's tough to describe, I guess it just sounds more like a BMW with the 2.5". These cars never sound great down low but it wasn't exceptionally terrible with either size.

PortugalGoal It certainly could be the supercharger. I had a noise that I thought was the supercharger but ended up being the belt tensioner. I replaced that as well as the crank pulley and it has been great ever since.

The header wil make the biggest difference but I certainly didn't loose power with the exhaust. I prefer the 2.5" though.

When your on decel and your engine braking, give the throttle a very slight blip and that's usually enough to get it to backfire.

Just mufflers delete? Resonator is still there? I have a muffler delete but instead of an entire stright pipe, there is a "chamber" (where was the muffler, the pipe is thicker than the OEM pipe) and the sound is not as stronger as yours.

What resonator are you referring to? There is no resonator on the stock r53 exhaust, just two mufflers at the rear. This set up consisted of a 3" pipe right after the cat all the way out the back. No mufflers.

Hey man, on this build it was just a stock header, stock cats, and no mufflers or resonators after the second cat. I eventually went to a custom resonator after the second cat because this was extremely loud. Right now I am running a catless Megan Header, test pipe to delete the second cat, and two straight through resonators on the back. Still very loud and sounds awesome.

This exhaust was built by Filthy Habits Fabrications. It's a 2.5" pipe after the cat and splits into a dual 2.5" rear section. Two Vibrant resonators are in place of the stock mufflers.

2005 and 2006 R53's have a feature programmed into the ecu that causes a small amount of fuel to be burned up in the exhaust durring decel. Adding a straight pipe really exaggerates it.

The backfiring is mostly due to ecu programming. Adding a straight pipe really makes the sounds magnified. If you have an R53 I would recommend building a 2.5" or 3" custom exhaust using resonators instead of mufflers.

This car had both stock catalytic converters as well as the stock manifold. My current red car has a Megan Racing header and both of the catalytic converters have been removed.
