In first run, he can drive around 130km(margin), then stop for 40min for another ~100km. So he needs to stop in total of 8 times(maybe 7 but I doubt it...) It takes ~10h to cover 1.000km + (8 charges x 40min) = ~16 hours...

Did 176km with 22km to spare on the motorways south-east of Oslo yesterday with a 94Ah i3 (to and from Oslo). Kept it at 100-110km/h where permitted. Average landed at 151Wh/km for both directions. Seems to jive with the numbers from the Mini and the i3s. Where the i3 sits somewhere in between.

They should have put their electric drive train into a 1series coupe or later a 2series coupe, they have done the ActiveE rental prototypes, but the battery needed to be split to make room for 4 people. That's maybe to expensive to make but it would be way more efficient driving faster than city speed. Also a coupe the size of the famous E36/E46 with rwd would have suited BMW a much better representative car of the future.

Is the Mini's drivetrain really identical to the i3? Or has it been updated with elements of the new "fifth-generation electric powertrain" that BMW has been banging on about? Or is this all down to the Mini's superior aerodynamics? (those ugly wheels must help!)

0.29 is for the shape, not the size. It's proportianal to the frontal area. A small call with a crappy CD can still be less resistant than a large car with a good CD because you are multiplying a smaller area.

Air temp. was 24° C and battery temp. at both start and end also 24° C. No A/C. The trip was done with a consumption of 14.6 kWh/100km. Return trip was 15.8 kWh/100km. The overall average was therefore 15.2 kWh/100km. It's a little better than what Bjørn achieved with Ioniq 28 - but I'm well satisfied.

I have just ordered a MINI Cooper S Level 3 to get one of these while i can and before the new improved / fugly MINI comes out. I am used to pathetic range having had a 2020 Corsa electric for 3 year and with All Season and Winter tyres on time about. Not the ditch finder Michelin Primacy 4. Loved how the Corsa has been but it was 110 miles max cold / & 150 summer, not hypermiling, having fun. So 2 sets of discs because of rust and drop links replaced twice in 50,000 miles. To the MINI then. I am not needed to cover the same miles, EV charging is no longer cheap or free in most of Scotland and public charging is cheaper with a 55 mpg ICE. So i have specced the Cooper S murdered out in Black, and with the 16" black rims. That means 195/55 R 16 tyres and they will likely be run flats. That is instead of the 205/45 R 17 which are usually XL (reinforced) Same size as on the Corsa Electric and which i wrecked a few tyres on bad roads. Maybe i will get a little better efficiency on the 195/55 R 16, and be able to put on All Weathers when needs must. Not that economy / range is why i want one, it is just for the fan and because my driving career back in the 1970,s started with Hillman Imp,s and Mini,s. The first car i even really enjoyed when young was a Mini Clubman 1275 & the MINI electric brings back memories of than but fatter, but then i am also about 50% heavier than back then.

Is an i3 not a Mini with an i3 shell? The original Mini EV (2012 London Olympics) was the mule for the i3. Our i3 is now 5.5 year old and still an excellent car. The mini has a smaller frontal area, hence likely the reason improved motorway efficiency. Interesting that the weight penalty over an i3 is not so large. I wonder if they'll upgrade to the latest battery technology or skip a generation of batteries? One thing about the Mini is its the best but car in its class. My daughter's Mini ONE is a December 2014 (purchased new by me) and has been fault free and is very solidly built, no rattles and an ideal car for both city and motorway driving. Her first car was a Fiat 500 which was great for town, but not so good on the motorway, but a great first car as it had good visibility.

I wonder if how well a Tesla 3/Y without skateboard battery design would do - it add something like 7 cm of heights?
@kaya051285
@kaya051285 4 жыл бұрын
The Tesla cells are 7cm high but the pack itself is closer to 9cm high so if they could design the car not as a skateboard but as a T layout (batteries in the central isle and under back seats) that would make the frontal area 9cm less which would be very significant The model 3 is 144cm tall and 14cm off the ground so the car itself is 130cm tall so if you can knock 9cm off that it would be a very significant reduction in frontal area. With 8% reduction in frontal area you would get 8% more range at high speeds The 4.25 miles per kWh at 70MPH should improve to about 4.6 miles per KWh at 70MPH or near 6.1 miles per KWh at 60MPH A 40KWh pack would allow 184 mile range @ 70MPH or 245 mile range @ 60MPH This could be a model 2 Basically a clone of the model 3 but 4 seat with the batteries between the seats and under the rear seats and 40KWh capacity. Smaller lighter more efficient 4 seat EV

I have the i3 and hope BMW sticks with trend for their upcoming EVs. Instead of stuffing them with a massive, heavy, expensive battery, design a more efficient car with a good charging curve and in practice you get a car which can still easily do longer journeys.
@kaya051285
@kaya051285 4 жыл бұрын
@siliara The best of both worlds would be a small battery for the car but the ability to rent for a very affordable price a mobile battery for the few days you might need long range Batteries are heavy but don't take up much room it wouldn't be difficult to design a cheap 50KWh or even 100KWh mobile Battery pack which can be collected at the local supercharger to add 200/400 mile range A 50KWh mobile battery pack might cost just $10,000 to manufacture and it would be pretty small in volume. If it lasts 4,000 cycles it would have a cost of $2.50 per cycle so a company could rent them out for as little a $5 a day and still make a profit I'd rather have a 30KWh EV and rent a +50KWh mobile battery than to have a 50+ KWh pack The lighter mass means tires would last longer and the car would be more efficient and cheaper while still being able to rent for a very affordable $5 a day for the few days a year you might need the extra capacity
@kaya051285
@kaya051285 4 жыл бұрын
@siliara Most people underestimate the part weight plays in cost Imagine a model 3 clone but 125 miles range rather than 250 mile range. This would reduce the weight by about 200kg or about 15% Reduce the weight by 15% and you can have a 15% smaller motor 15% smaller power electronics 15% smaller frame, 15% smaller suspension, 15% smaller crash beams, Smaller tires, smaller break pads, etc etc So you are not just saving on the battery cost and weight but also on the cost and weight of a lot of other things Right now EVs are for the upper end of the market but we really need the middle and lower end as most the sales especially in Europe are small affordable cars I don't see how a 250 mile range heavy car will be affordable. And by affordable I mean VW polo Ford Fiesta type affordable the sub £15,000 segment. To get to that price point we will probably need 125 mile range EVs with lighter packs and frame and motor and everything else

@siliara The heavy mobile battery would only be used very infrequently. Over the last 10 years I would have used a mobile battery perhaps 5 times. So 5 days out of 3,650 days that means 99.9% of the days I would be fine with the onboard 125 mile range So it is a big efficiency gain to not have to lug around 200kg of extra batteries that you only need 0.1% of the time And I'm not suggesting all cars should have to be just 125 miles I'm saying the affordable end would be okay with 125 mile range (@70MPH. @60MPH range would be 155 miles)

Bjorn , I can't find in you Car Range data the range test for your Model 3 in summer(for 90 and 120km/h)? For Model 3 you have only one summer test M3 SRP with 90km/h? Your M3 tests are mostly in winter. And also e-Soul 64 in you summer test perform much worse than Kona 64 in summer? For 90/120km/h it is 153/210 Wh/km to 127/189Wh/km. Is e-Soul so bad/thirsty or it is because of 10 degree difference in temperature? I wanted to compare with VW ID3 results, at average speed 119km/h - 205 Wh/km.

@@bjornnyland this is one time Przemek is correct. While similar, it's not the identical battery but by CATL. Here's a quote from Cleantechnica on July 10th, 2018 by Steve Hanley: "On July 9, German prime minister Angela Merkel and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang met to sign an agreement that will bring a CATL battery factory to the east German city of Erfurt. CATL, which stands for Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd, is China’s largest battery manufacturer. BMW has already signed up to buy over $1.7 billion worth of batteries from CATL to power its upcoming electric cars for the European market - the electric MINI and an upcoming four door electric limousine. BMW will also purchase batteries worth nearly $3 billion from CATL for the electric vehicles it produces in China." I visited the Cowley factory last year and they explained where they had to modify the 'body-in-white' of the Mini Cooper shell to fit the batteries. They are under the back seat and elsewhere, quite differently arranged to the i3 [I'm on my 2nd i3 now]. The EV goes on the same production line as 3 other Mini models, otherwise there's much of the i3 drivetrain in the Mini. Indeed, the only real impact the weight of the car has is when calculating the power to weight ratio, which impacts the linear acceleration. For instance the Mini only has a 135kW motor, versus the 150kW motor of the Kona, but the car is 320kg lighter, therefore it's power to weight ratio is about 10% better than the Kona. Once each car has finished accelerating the heavier car has more momentum, so for steady driving it doesn't really take more energy to maintain the speed.
@72freson
@72freson 4 жыл бұрын
Well...if you take Björns Tesla and fill it up to maximum capacity with people and Luggage, the amount of energy needed to go 100km will go up compared to if only Björn drives the car(The Cars milage will get worse)...but it is not the efficiancy of the drive chain that suddenly has changed(!)....the drive chain still use the same Wh/Kg(If we disregard internal electrical resistor difference)...the difference in spent energy is due to that the amount of kilos has increased.....my idea to try to "Noramlize" the efficiancy to include the wight is also not correct(!)...The cars drag coefficiant also need to be included to calculate the drive chains efficiancy
