The new MINI Electric broadens the brands appeal even further. First, there’s a really very sensible £24,300 asking price (after grants), putting it squarely up against… well pretty much every other small EV on the market. It has a modest claimed driving range of 140 miles from a 32.5kWh battery pack, but Mini believes this is the right compromise between cost, range and weight. If your lifestyle means you don’t need to drive long distances every day then an electric car with a smaller battery like this (which is less expensive to make and takes less time to charge) could work well for you. What do you think, let us know if the comments below!
If you like the Mini Electric then we think you should also check out:

I'm quite keen on one of these and I think the range is fine for how I'd use it in the city then just charge it in the driveway overnight. Smaller battery keeps it lighter, more efficient, more fun to drive and less wasteful with material. What I really don't understand is every reviewer making the same point that the smaller battery has the advantage of being quicker to charge. It can only charge at up to 50kW on CCS whereas some rivals with bigger batteries are over 100kW now. And the main point is, if you charge it at 7kW at home, it will certainly take less time to fully charge over cars with bigger batteries but it's not like its adding more miles any faster. You still at the same 7kW/h to the battery whether it's a 33kWh or a 100kWh so why keep pointing this out as an advantage. Plus, you'll spend proportionally longer periods at lower rapid charge speeds when topping up above 80% on a smaller battery so it doesn't make sense on any level. Oooof, I'm pedantic.

Excellent review, my dad owns a 2018 Mini 1499GT He bought it 3 weeks ago, he loves it already. I'd been looking for nearly 2 years to try and find the right Mini for him. As soon as he saw the car, he knew it was the right car We looked at a Mini Electric the other day. Great looking car, he said if he had the money and somewhere to charge it, he'd buy one

Great review! I'm a MINI Electric driver (I've had about 8 MINI ICE's before it) and I just love it. It's my favouritest MINI ever.

I'm considering one, but I'm single/one car family. How is the range with all highway driving for the occasional road trip?

Great review. I am considering ordering this car for my wife. As current BMW i3s owner, I can assure you that the range is not really an issue for daily usage. In the very first month of my ownership of the i3s, I did around 9000 KMs in just 4 weeks! The key is to know your local charging stations. Plan your shopping to be done at same place as you charge your car and you basically gets free motoring for life. I have barely paid for any electricity at all in those first 9000 kms. Our local shopping centres have free AC chargers and it's enough for normal daily driving. Top up the rest at home over night and you are good to go.

Beautiful car. Wish it had a tad more range. I’d get nervous with every round trip to and from any destination more than 45 miles away

confused about a small battery that is quicker to chare, are you saying that it is faster to charge it up to the same mile of range than those with big batteries? or it is just faster to 100% full (which is, of course for small battery.....)

Has an MINI App to go with it but where's the phone holder? Do vehicle interior designers not have phones and if they do then what do they do with their phone when they get in the car?

I still cannot understand why mini/bmw went with such a small pack, especially since it’s has easy access to the 42kw i3 battery in the same footprint

Not a bad car at all. Though would prefer it in green not the white and yellow. It's not so great for distance on a full charge and 5 hours to recharge is ridiculous. £24000 is a lot. If manufacturers want to encourage electric vehicle usage, should make it more affordable. Infrastructure should have been sorted first before all EVs went into production.

so it seems they (mini/bmw) has made a big deal about running the cooper s (petrol) and mini cooper e on the same line - basically the same cooper shell with petrol or electric innards. has anyone asked why they couldn’t just use the cooper s convertible shell and stick in the electric innards? (seems like a rather obvious move to make?) because THAT would be what would actually get me to buy one - a proper (affordable) electric convertible.

Hi, Can you explain fast charging please ! I’m just about to order this vehicle,is fast charging the cable or the power point? I live near a 22W street electrical point & near a electric lamppost. Can I fast charge from there ?
@Electrifyingcom
@Electrifyingcom 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, good choice it's a great car. So here's the charging thing explained: if you have off street parking you can have a home charging unit fitted which will typically be a 7kW charger. The Mini EV will charge from this in around 5 hours. A faster charger like the one of the street light near you gives a more powerful supply of electricity and will charge faster, it should take around 3 hours on a 22kW charger. A lot of the public charging points are now even faster (50 kW) and if you can find one of those you'll be able to fully charge in around half an hour. I hope his helps, if you head to our site electrifying.com and go to the Knowledge Hub there's info on there about how to charge and what you need to know. Enjoy the car when it arrives and thanks for watching our video! Ginny

You can't charge from a lamppost. It is only designed to power a light bulb. I assume you mean 22kW electrical point. Assuming you are allowed to use that, the Mini can only charge at 11kW AC (limited by the on board AC/DC converter). Rapid charge is DC, if you can't charge at home you will need to locate the nearest charger. Use the zapmap app on phone to do this.

If you order now I doubt you will see the car for 7 months at least. Had a test drive in early March and people were being told September for orders taken then. The factory has been closed for nearly a month now but may open in May. I ordered in October last year and was told May for delivery. Not going to happen now though...

is it true that they have a 6 speed manual stick version for this car? I can't believe how ugly the interior of Honda E (looks like my multi computer monitors setup for gaming) is comparing to the mini.

EV's don't need a gearbox. Not automatic, not manual. The motor has a flat enough torque curve that gears are 100% unnecessary. You don't even need a reverse gear because the motors just turn backwards.

I've owned 7 consecutive MINI's (and a couple of classic Mini's too). As an electric car - it's pretty disappointing. 7 sec 0-60, top speed of 95...*really*. 120mile range. Argh. How did they make it so bad? So for the first time in 20 years - I don't own a MINI. Instead I have a Tesla - 5 second 0-60, 140mph top speed and 240 mile range...it's **SO** much better. It's a big, heavy car - but it handles pretty good...probably that's the only thing the MINI might win on. But even that, I wonder. FWD cars need weight over the front wheels - gas powered MINI's have 70/30 weight distribution - which is what you want...the electric MINI is 50/50 - which presumably means it handles like the first convertibles did...bleaugh. I **SO** wanted this to be a great car - and it just isn't.

It also costs nearly double the price and for 90% of people 95% of the time the range increase is pointless. Also saying its slower and has less range, obviously it does; again its half the price. " I can't believe my £40k base spec A6 isn't as nice and fast as my porsche panamera!"

so on a 600 mile trip you will have 3 hrs of charging time if you are lucky . What a laugh. Be better to do short trips on a bike and save a ton of money. Cant believe anyone would buy it.
