Thank you so much for taking the time to show this step by step procedure ! I have a 2014 Nissan Rogue that in order to monitor the CVT Temperature , on my android, it will take an ELM327 VERSION 1.5 or lower , as the later versions do not work well. So this will be a way to check the local store purchase and see what version it is .

Just got one from China where the case looks just like the blue one you have. Inside is only one PCB and the microcontroller is a blob (Chip bonded to the PCB and covered in a black blob). Testing this device with the ELM327 testing tool gives me all green lights all the way to 2.2 Still says "I am a ELM327 v1.5" in the top though :)

@@richardlloydusa Well it does tell me that there are no error codes stored and all of the measuting points seem to work. (Voltage, RPM and so on) So basically i would say yes. I primarily bought it as a sort of quicktest to have in my car (Not connected, but in the glove box) if the car suddenly died or had the check engine light on. No need to tow the car and have it diagnosed at a mechanic if the only thing wrong was some connector fell off or some sensor that i could change in 5 minutes myself was bad.

I cannot get mine to work for nothing tried all different kinds of apps still nothing it says mine is a 2.1 I ran the app that you suggested but still it will not connect with my car's computer I have a 1996 Lincoln Town Car and it is OBD2 compliant.... when I ran the app you are referring to in this video it did say it was a 2.1 but on the list 2.1 Stayed red have no idea what is wrong?

Mine supports all protocols everthing is green, even til 2.3 which does not show up on your display. It says it is an ELM 327 v 1.5. More supported (green) protocols are better, right? Some 2.1 are not as good as the 1.5 the don't support even the upper protocols, but if you have a good version, it should support al of them as i understand it.

I just bought an ELM327 2.1 and when I plug it into my 2015 evo it only lights green up to 1.4 but then at the top says it is 2.1. So does that mean it IS a 2.1? If so why doesn't it light up green to 2.1?

Good job Richard... This will help buyers know whether they've been ripped off when they receive their goods. Allot of eBay sellers advertise v2.0, v2.1 etc in their descriptions, but when you get them they are pretty much always using the earlier version ELM IC inside. Some sellers will suggest that the advertised v2.0, v2.1 etc is the device model number rather than the internal ELM IC version number when you quiz them, the sneaky bastards. Its always worth contacting the seller in advance before taking the plunge based solely on an eBay description.

I ran the checker and all bands were red except for half of v1.0, 1.2, 1.3 and about 75% of v1.4b but the text said it was v2.1 so go figure. The product info for this sale on fleabag said it was a v1.5. Methinks somebody's information is wrong........ It won't connect with the app on Bluetooth either but the reader software did. Any ideas anyone?

Orb 2 is a standard car connector for all cars. The version may matter in the odb2 device, the other is car codes msy or may not be readable, that would be sorted via the app so an app that could work might not due to the app doesn't understand the codes.

Mine says V2.1 but only fewe version from 1.0 til 1.4b is green rest of them is red and some protocol is unsupported. I guess the seller is ripping me off

Version 1.5 doesn't really exist, that's something knock offs setup. Pretty sure same goes for 2.1. Unfortunately you cannot get a legitimate one outside of dealerships and authorized repair shops, to my knowledge, but you can get the official chip and then replace it yourself, directly from ELM.

As long as it is pin compatable and socketed it would be real easy to swap. Pin compatable and soldered would take a bit longer but wouldn't be too bad. If it is not pin comparable at all it can probably still be done, just would need to figure out what pin would need to connect where and if extra support components were needed. Trying out an adaptor billed as an xtrons elm327 v2.2 off ebay. Doubt it will be, but at least I had seen several reports on these showing full at command compatability to 1.4 and it sounds like it is rare to find a clone unit that has full functionality.

I've had great success with the 1.5 versions. I still use the blue one. I don't know where the black one went (I'm sure it will surface sometime) the only warning I will give you is don't leave it plugged in when you're not using it. Mine drained my battery after three day of having it plugged in. I bought and use this one too Amazon(paid): amzn.to/3yVM4in it works great (It's an Elm 1.5 too) and is easier to see functioning but be careful not to leave it plugged in when you're not using it. You should add the information that your examples are clearly fake ELM327. ELM electronics never made a version 1.5. Have a look at www.elmelectronics.com/help/obd/tips/#327_Versions -- there was no official version between 1.4b and 2.0

The readers marked with v2.1 are the worst (worse than those marked with v1.5). They are cheap and have problems with several obd2 protocols. Do not buy
