It is ok to convert 3.5mm mini jack to XLR - there will be some quality loss, but with a good adaptor it will be marginal. So the winner is Rode VXLR+:
UK: amzn.to/39llqzR
US: amzn.to/3bqxf9R
Other convertors/adapters to consider:
UK:

amzn.to/3eKCjHJ
US:

The runner up - Movo FXLR Pro: (out of stock now).

Thank you, it helped me get a rode. I just bought an XLR to 3.5mm wire to go from my plug in lavalier receiver to my video camera and didn't know it needed to be powered. You, hopefully, fixed this for me!

Glad it helped. I remember when I did not know and could not figure out the issue. It's great to have others around willing to share their skills and knowledge.

Hi Kamil, I enjoyed your video and your honest open bias. Your video helped me come to the opposite conclusion. I record audio into a digital recorder and have a camera microphone I like that I want to try before just getting XLR microphones. Your video showed me the Movo will be good enough for my purposes and certainly good enough to use until I decided on what XLR microphones I want to get. Thanks.🙂

Glad it was helpful! But I still insist that you buy Rode. They are sometimes available on a deal and the difference in quality is fairly big, and even if you spend extra £10, it's not a big deal. Believe me - you may regret it if you buy cheap. Thanks for the comment, by the way.

RODE seems to be outta stock everywhere, can you recommend a substitute?

I do not know of any other good substitute - but there maybe some - I just don't know.

the mini jack 3.5mm in the RODE broke,,, 2 times. You have to push much to hard to get it in and it dont comes out, so you put some force, and it broke. I got a remplacement but it broke too. Could be good but the jack is too cheap. I should have put some lubrifiant on the second one...

Oh, interesting. Sorry to hear you had this issue twice. I have not used mine ones long enough to notice. Maybe a faulty batch? Who knows.

Thank you for the comparison. When measuring the noise was the adapter input terminated?

No. As far as I remember, I just plugged it in empty.

And it doesn't have more noise - it's just more sensitive so louder overall
@KamilsTechTips
@KamilsTechTips 2 жыл бұрын
Movo was much noisier, not more sensitive. Rode is quite solid.

I'd be curious to hear the direct recordings instead of from the speaker if that would be possible.

@@KamilsTechTips what he means is when you side by side comparisons, we can hear your mic on in the background with you clicking your mouse and keyboard (at the same time the comparisons are playing). So we didn't get a true comparison. Should've cut your live mic track in post for the final video audio so we could hear just the file comparisons.

Do both adapters need phantom to be on or off? I think from what I've read it doesn't really matter? My Rode adaptors are coming in a few days for some Rode to Go wireless mics.

@@KamilsTechTips yea it’s going well, no problems or issues as yet. Just make sure you’ve got headphones to monitor your audio levels before you start recording.

@@nickswebtsv Ok, good idea. Now I'm thinking about just putting my other mic next to me, even if it is in the frame - less hassle, I guess. Cheers

I have boya and when i connect it directly to soundcard it creates annoying background noise BUT when i plug it into Presonus TubePre then to sound card it works perfectly fine. I don't know why it is like that...

I have the Rode. It's absolutely rubbish. it only works if I have the TRS cable in and then pushed back half a click. Rode's quality control is shocking.
