Mini R50 R53 xenon headlight troubleshooting and repair: ballast, igniter and xenon bulb (2002-2004)

In this video you will be able to see the main parts consisting the xenon system of the Mini Cooper D One S JCW R50 R53 xenon headlight. The system is AL made and consist of one ballast, one igniter and one D2R xenon bulb.

I have a 2005 Mini Cooper S with the HID headlights. The passengers' side was out so I bought a new bulb and nothing, so I checked the ignitors (swapped them) and nothing, then I swapped the ballasts and it worked. When I went to put the good ballast on the drivers side again, it did not work! Now none of the lights work!

Hi, i have a trouble , i do the swap from halogen to xenon, the lights turn on, but soon i start the engine. They start to flick and non stop. I hope you can help me. Greetings

I ve a question Can I remove the ballast and put a simple lamp led? I hope you answer because I’ve bought an r53 without ballasts and I want to change the headlights 😊

unfortunately xenon headlights without ballasts are impossible :). @@CristianoGRolando

Здравствуйте!! Посмотрел ваше видео,вы занимаетесь светом авто?? Если да,то подскажите ,если убрать перегородку в фаре Купер r50 рефленая перегородка стоит в ближнем свете ,будет ли свет нормально и ровно светить?

Hi, maybe not relevant, but just wondering if I wanted to go from Xenon to LED, I have to bypass the ballast, so it effectively turns into standard halogen unit but with a D2R/S base on the bulb. Im asking because when ever I connect my D2R/S LED to the ignitor connection, the LED just flashes, but if I bypass the ballast (cable from 12v wire before ballast, straight to ignitor connection, then to LED bulb, would this work? Hope you will know this as I really want LED bulbs 😊

Everything depends on which type of led bulb you will use. If I were you, I would never touch the factory settings.

Ive bought an LED bulb with a D2 base so it will fit the light housing, and the setup will go like this... LED Bulb to Driver to + & - 12v power wire before Ballast. So ballasts 12v input (from battery) will branch off to LED Driver then to LED Bulb. Does this make any sense to you? Possible work or not at all. The LED with D2 base fits the headlight perfectly, just need to power it i hope 😊

@mikulaszimak8840 Yes mate, I cut off the the D2 connecter, cut power & ground from before the ballast (short group of wires underneath ballast). Wired straight to bulb. Such a simple improvement and my got led is fantastic.
