Sculpting hoods! It's a great way to get out of sculpting the head and face ... er ... um ... Just kidding (sort of kidding).
Hoods are a fun detail to add to your sculpts. But if you don't do it the right way, it can make your mini's head look large and bulky. Check out the video for some great techniques you can use for sculpting hoods and that can be applied to other elements as well.
Medium:
FIMO Professional (polyclay)

Woo yeah, another video :D. Trouble is I rarely see what's happening as I when I watch I always have the irresistible urge to pick up a mini and get to work. I can't believe how long it took me to approach clothing as basically adding very small details (edges and folds) to underlying anatomy, rather than adding a whole new layer. Ps, love the new opening.

That’s a good problem to have. As much as I love for people to watch the vids, the best way to get better is to simply keep sculpting. Thanks!

Greenstuff is... well... it’s a tough material to work with. Check out some of my earlier vids where I talk about Greenstuff and ProCreate. That will have a few tips for you. I plan to have some more videos in the future where I cover most specifics when working with putty.

100 percent new.. haven't even bought the tools or medium yet but will soon. Watching your vids in the meantime and learning.. So I have a question about using the clay on a pre existing figure, like say, a warhammer model. Something that cannot be baked along with the hood.. Is the clay simply out of the question? I'd like to start out on the clay because it doesn't quick dry, but obviously I couldnt bake it on to of a plastic Marines head after I shaped it there. So what are your thoughts on this? Any tricks on how to mold the hood like this, remove, so it could be baked on its own free of the plastic?
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 2 жыл бұрын
If the mini you are sculpting on is plastic or resin, then you are correct. Polymer clay is a no go because you can't bake your miniature without everything melting. If you are using a metal miniature as the base, then you can cook it along with the clay and it will be fine. There are ways to sculpt with polyclay on existing miniatures, but you will probably still need some putty to help the clay stick to the miniature. Or you can always glue the clay bit on afterwards. Good luck!

Do you sculpt figures for a company?
@TomMasonSculptor

I have freelanced for numerous companies over the years including Reaper Miniatures and Wizkids. I was also the Miniatures Director for MegaCon Games (MERCS Minis). Now I mainly create my own sculptures but sometimes take on professional work.
