I have an outdoor unit (regular 3 ton heat pump) at the end of about 60 feet of wire in a 120/208 feed. On very hot days it takes a few spinups to get going. The amp clamp shows a very high start surge, but running is fine. Capacitors all fine, regular incoming voltage looks fine. I'm guessing that there is a voltage drop due to the inrush amps on that length of wire and starting out at 208 anyway. Is putting this unit (for protection) and a soft starter (to deal with the inrush/voltage drop) together appropriate?
@bigdee84693 жыл бұрын
What is usually the symptom of a mini split that has been under a surge condition? Blown fuses on the board? A locked out board with no other explanation or is there an LED code? Or is this type of surge protector an add-on/preventative device? I only ask because I think ive only ever come across maybe one set of bad fuses on a mini split in my entire career(including my own), and that was because a snow plow had buried it in a huge pile of snow. Thanks.

Finally got it up and running. The only delays we had was because we realized we needed some extra parts (I’ll list that below) kzbin.infoUgkxihMYiJNXcHdbH-7ihymsLz61l7jVyb5O . So we have a loft where our current hvac just couldn’t seem to keep cool during the summer. We have been using a window unit since we bought this house over 6 years ago (all the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 80’s and majority of the houses built like ours use a window unit). I hate window units because they are just so noisy and the one we had really only cools one side of the loft. I had contemplated upgrading our current HVAC, but with all the rising prices these days, it would take years before saving up enough to do that. With the advice of my father-in-law (used to run an HVAC business), he recommended we get an inverter instead. We thought we bought everything we needed, but there were just a few other parts we didn’t anticipate needing (which is what caused most of our delay). My friend and father-in-law did all the work to get it installed and running and now we have nice cool air circulating nicely throughout the entire loft. It is very quiet and even the outside unit is much quieter than our main HVAC unit. Saved ourselves thousands getting this.

This monitor phase? Like L1 120 V and L2 120 V NOT 180 degrees out of phase? I'm looking to see if I can power a 240 V Mini Split with a 5000 Watt inverter off two outlets on the same inverter. The mini split also is inverting AC to DC. I'm thinking the mini split board does not see phase and just needs to see 2 120 V legs. Sorry if this is confusing.

Nobody had inverter units for the past 30 years except weirdos who bought Trane's unit in the 80s or early 90s. That's why. Kalos requires them on all installs of inverter units, like Carrier Greenspeed. They've solved issues where they had too high voltages come in and the power company will not fix. If you don't account for that you'll keep having a unit break and keep replacing control boards.
@Hurpdurpdipidydoo Жыл бұрын

I recently failed an American Standard Platinum variable speed compressor unit under warranty that cost me $2400 in labor/freon. The installer suggested I get one of these because I discovered the utility voltage will drop to 210 at times which is probably a death sentence for this unit, if it was running when the voltage dropped. I did have over voltage protection but that was not the issue it seems.

Fans lights tv computer server rack everything was fried but the only things that survive was all 6 of the panasonic inverter mini splits and whirlpool inverter fridge. 😂 , My pc survived cus of a ups. My dads pc did not survive cus his ups was much older model and the ups itself died from the surge. A lot of switching powersupplies survived but their loads did not. Everything that was on lan died including the wifi router that just exploded into bits . Tv died. There was holes on internal chips. Like the lan chip had it's cap blown off. 3 celling fans died , i had to send them for coil rebuild. all in all it was about 3000$ worth of damage but nothing happened to the inverter ac's. I do not have a non inverter anymore. But with my previous experience with air conditioners they typically do survive lightning strike cus the compressor motor just absrobes bulk of the surge.

Before circuit breakers their were only fuses to protect the wiring. It should be noted both fuses and circuit breakers protect the size wire in the circuit's 14 ga wire will use a 15 amp fuse or circuit breaker to protect the wire from over heating. 12 ga =20 amp 10 ga 30 amp and 2/0 150 amp , you can have a fart fan drawing 1/2 amp running on a 100 amp line. I checked my chart and they say FUSE size not circuit breaker size. You must be thinking of the little fuse on furnaces they only protect the electronics .
