My dad actually built the original of this, plus it's sister red clubman for Richard Longman (my dad's colleague and friend, and whose mum was my dinner lady at primary school), for the btcc back in the day. But the twins were so powerful and fast even Richard found them a handful! The era and magic of the boys at downton engineering ( and later Smiths and August Motors) around Downton, in South Wiltshire, showed what you could do with simple street cars. My dad ( Bob brown, actually built the blue longman clubman, and it's sister red one, for the btcc, for Richard longman, the original ones, and deserves mega respect for them), and gave me the most special street sleeper '74 mini as my first car! The original Downton Engineering lads are the unsung heroes of the mini history

Amazing - now I know why I stopped watching F1 - This has soooooo much more excitement - and a 1275 Mini v V8s, Capris andsuch, and still coming 5th! This is a testament to how well the car is set up and the skill of the drivers.

Looking at the escort out the side window on the mini and hearing the motor screaming and seeing the rear bouncing away kinda puts a lump in the throat. Those two would be the first lottery win purchases for me! 😁

I got a chance to drive a Mini back in the '70s. Nothing fancy. Just a neighbor's car I did a minor tune up on. It was a bit small for me (6'4".) But, I loved it. Great little car! One of my favorites.

Lucky I made it to retirement, now rebuilding 1430 Mini to the spec I want, no more cash wasted on carp family holidays, and small enough to fit into parking bays. Can't wait to fire it up.

In 1978-79 Richard Longman won the British Touring car champs in a 1275GT mini clubman, 20 years after the Mini was first released, What other car has done that?? Its like going back in time and getting a 1999 Race Car bring it back to 2019 entering it in a race and saying whats the matter cant you win any more
@wickiezulu4 жыл бұрын
The 9 year gap between the Mini's last British Touring car triumph with Alec Poole in 1969 and Richard Longman's in 1978-1979 brings to mind the question of whether the Mini missed out on a potential golden era of success.

Around 140 bhp NA.
@mauriziopescatori46066 жыл бұрын
Frankly, I don't see how an OHV 1275 with a 3-bearnig crankshaft can produce 140bhp.The A-series engine will not allow much more than 6500rpm, even in race tune. No crossflow head, no 5 bearing crankshaft, only 2 valves/cylinder.The best ever obtained on a road-legal car was 115bhp by University Motors in the 1970s with 4 Mikuni carburetters and a seriously modified head.
