If you ever wanted to feel like Burt Reynolds, this 1979 Trans Am would give you the chance. I always admired the design and what it did for the movie Smokey and the Bandit, but after driving a modified one like this, I have a whole new appreciation for this car. The owner is a smart man for keeping it in such great shape and for modifying it the way he did. This is the most manageable and predictable 500 horsepower monster I’ve ever driven.
As always, feedback is welcomed. I'm a KZbinr in training, so go easy on me. Thanks for watching!

I ended up crimping my rear brake lines to give a nice line lock affect and the 403 is no slouch itself when tuned the right way :-) My '79 would definitely get out of its own way. Over 31 years only one car ever made me feel like I was standing still on the highway and that was a Mustang 5.0 GT turbo. I'm sure it was a bit above stock, but he was totally toying with me, slowing down to make me think I caught up and then rocketing off like I had slammed on the breaks. I tried to blame it on the carb lol but the secondaries were opening up just fine :-) If I was in my old '76 with the 454 SD, then it would've been a different story all together ;-) Awesome video and demonstration! Drive it like you own it!

I love the look of the 2nd generation Firebirds. I own an 81' Y84 SE Trans AM with the 301 Turbo (the last year of that style). A great looking original car with just over 24,000 miles. It handles and drives really nice for it's age, but my engine is a lame duck compared to the beast in this video. I'll bet that thing was a blast to drive! You are right about everybody looking at you when you drive the T/A. The attention mine gets is incredible. It's a nice feeling when you get total strangers to smile, give you the "thumbs up", compliment the car and share great stories from their past that involve the Firebird!

My dream car since I was five years old when my parents showed me Smokey and the Bandit for the first time. So sad that the Bandit himself passed away. One of these days, I'll own one and dedicate it to Mr. Reynolds. Great video and great channel.

You're a smart man. I was shocked to see he passed only days after I put this together. Decent versions of the car are available but ones in good shape aren't cheap and ones in poor shape need a ton of work, still not an impossible dream my friend. I'm happy you enjoyed the video and glad I did the bandit and his car justice. Thanks for watching and for the feedback!

Thanks man! I hope to build one and make it a little better than the original. I want to drop a Pontiac stroker motor in it, along with a better transmission, and new suspension and brakes, but keep the car looking like it did in the movie.
@Altek1
@Altek1 5 жыл бұрын
That's the way to do it. I'm not against modernizing a car while maintaining a near stock look. The 4 wheel disc brakes were a dream in this car, I can only imagine it with modern suspension. It really did handle well since he had wider tires on it, but if you upgraded the steering and suspension, that thing would be an even bigger blast. Always keep your eyes open for a used one, you never know what gem you might come across.

That was a very well done review with a cool car. I always was in love with Pontiac Trans Am ever since I was 8 years old and I'm almost 40 now. I hate to admit it but if I had that man's car I would get in some serious trouble with it within 30 minutes of driving. I had a 1986 Trans Am 305 multi-port fuel injection t-tops automatic. I was seventeen and had a CB radio in the car I used to tear up the interstate I had fun I did it responsibly but I did get pulled over quite often. And I know that might sound counterintuitive but what I mean was I went out on the highways at 2:30 in the morning when there was no traffic. When I was a kid there wasn't people going to work at 1 to 3 or 4 in the morning in my area now there's a lot more people that live around here you could never do that safely on a straight Road. By the time I had my 1989 Firebird I was older and it was more of a cruising car but I never had the opportunity to have a chance at a real machine like that and that to me is a real Trans Am.
@Altek1
@Altek1 5 жыл бұрын
CB radio for the win! You definitely know the feeling. I totally get what you're saying, especially when you have a badass car, as you did, you need to open it up and enjoy it but you don't have to be dangerous to do so. Even in my videos when I'm flooring it to the speed limit, I'm doing it on an on ramp. As they say, if you're going to do something wrong, do it right. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching bud!

The best thing to ever happen to that TRANS AM was the 403 olds was blown up.. The real Smokey and the bandit cars had their 301 Pontiac and 403 old's engines replaced with Chevy engines. The car that made the jump over the bridge that was out, had a big block Chevy in it with a 4-speed! 😎

Thanks a lot buddy, I always appreciate your feedback. I felt the Burt Reynolds impression was pushing it but as I put it together, it just felt right, really happy you enjoyed it. GM has choked Pontiacs potential with repeated denials for Pontiacs own plans and designs since the beginning until they ultimately executed the division altogether. They would have destroyed the Vette from jump street and could have been in the ranks of exotics or beyond since the late 60s - early 70s. Their designes were superior in almost every way with but as I stated before, the cold hands of GM executives muffled the screams and choked the breath out of them until they were done with it and fully shut them down... Pontiac had amazing amounts if history and an even more intriguing life. 1 of many reasons I learned to dislike GM. Was once a die hard fan but I have seen the light

Great car. Not expert but did he say 1979 T/A? That looks like a 77 or 78 due to its front end look.

I did mention that it's a 79 with a 78 front end. He had a bit of damage on the front and decided to go with what's arguably the better looking nose of that generation. So maybe you are an expert 😁 thanks for watching.
