Steve Famine: / stevefamine
All I had in my head for how we were going to tackle the project is the old school 2D sprites from the Dune 2000 game I played when I was younger.
Armed with some excellent reference and fan art, I set about making the overall shape with steel wire, then coating it with plasticard, textured EVA and lots of plastic bits and 3D printed greeblies.
Tune into Steve's channel to see it painted up!
This type of structure has real-world counterparts, for example:
www.economist.com/science-and...
Dune is one of my favourite sci-fi series, and the universe is rich with loads of great bits of technology and fantastic imagery.

Loved both of those games and really like that you brought that to life. My favorite thing I made for my Necrons was some of the terrain based off of dawn of war. You can always tell when someone has or hasn't played them based off of what they say when they see the table. Thank you for sharing and please stay safe.

Very nice, Knarb! I love Dune, the book at least. I have not played the game or seen the new movie yet. I loved the section on moisture collectors in Chile. I guess Tatooine had a similar thing too (moisture vaporators). The tip about plastic signs from the hardware store is a great one and that blue LED looks fantastic. The whole build came out great!

You know, I was looking at the Sydney opera house in terms of shape/design. Ultimately it is a vastly different structure as it has interlocking segments of "swoops" that are covered in windows. They also jut out at 45 degrees in the center (looking down at them).

Brilliant work, nostalgia feels for Dune 2 - the true precursor to all modern RTS games and still one of my fav of all time. Honestly when I heard about the new movies, I was more hyped about the prospect of this series being picked up again by EA (who I presume hold the game rights still?).

The detail on the wind trap turned out great and it's already looking good with just a Zenithal prime. With the pulsing blue light and the Zenithal prime I would be happy to have it on the table as is, it'll be great to see how it looks painted and weathered.

Wow I remember this game, don't build on the soft sand. I can't believe this game is 20+ years old now but this game was the introduction to the book. I'm excited about the movie but I fully expect it to be Dune a Marvel retelling with lots of cool special effects, sword fights, an epic fight scene on the back of a sandworm, and face-punching. You know just like the book :)

All this talk about wind traps got me reading a Wikipedia article on Windcatchers, an architectural element used since ancient times to cool and ventilate buildings. Something that sort of fell out of use with the advent of powered air conditioning, but which is making sort of a comeback due to electricity concerns. It's actually kind of fascinating, how people even in ancient times could work to overcome the elements and find elegant solutions to problems. I think windcatchers would make for an interesting detail to add to terrain features. Fantasy and historical terrain, to be sure, but also for certain kinds of Sci Fi. Think Tatooine from Star Wars, or the local planetary equivalent.
@KnarbMakes
@KnarbMakes 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, ancient wind catchers came on my radar too for this build. Ultimately they are meant for a different purpose, but they both have wind entrapment in the name, haha.

As far as moisture goes they kinda work the opposite way: they require a qanat (an underground aqueduct tapping the water table of a nearby mesa or similar) so they evaporate water, but provide cooling. Nifty tech.

Great build. I've always wanted to do a Westwood-style (which is Lynch-style, which is the most common style) windtrap, but I lacked in skills and proper workshop space. I wonder if it would do as good with more ribs made out of cardboard (maybe one per plate section?).

Yeah! The more ribs you add, the better it will hold up. The skeleton is the hardest bit, then its just covering it with sheets.
