Sharpe was my introduction to the period back in the early 90s. There’s so much out there to read, can be hard to know where to start. A couple of good general Peninsular war books are a nice place to start. The Osprey books are brilliant too, especially for an introduction or a particular battle. There’s a great little book called Sharpe’s Companion as well, it places each Sharpe story in historical context, about the real battle, and where the story fits in.

That sounds fantastic. It might well work you know, Sarissa tends to be true 15mm (I think), but that seems to mean a large footprint compared to other ranges of 15mm buildings that I’ve seen (which seem to slightly smaller, but probably better for table space). I’ve started a review video, it’s fully built now, but the video won’t be out for a couple of weeks as I want to paint it first. I can take some pictures with models in and around if that helps? The roofs all come off, so space for models inside etc. I’ve got some AB somewhere, but I couldn’t find them the other day, so you might have to setting for Epic stuff and some MiniFigs as examples.

@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
I may well do Scots Greys anyway, they’re iconic, and I want to cover the way I’d paint the horses in a tutorial. It’s possible grey horses could be covered before I get to them though. For this scale I’d be relaying heavily on Contrast Apothecary White, then tidying up with an off white, probably finishing off with some light sponging/stippling of light grey and white in places.

Re Graham's column, the first skirmishes occurred north of the river where one of Reille's divisions was stationed as Graham's column came into view out of a wooded area. Much of Graham's approach march was also covered by high ground. But as he came into view the french withdrew that division to defend Abechuco while the other one garrisoned Gamarra and defended the river bank/ The Brits eventually took both villages but Grahams men found that they could make so further headway as the French artillery had been positioned to cover the exits of the villages and the bridges over the Zadorra. Graham's command (apart from Longa's Spaniards, which had managed to force their way across further east ) was thus bottled up on the north bank until the French centre collapsed and Reille's men then became the rearguard as they withdrew to the east through the defile.
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mike 🙂 This was about the most detail I could find as well. Makes for a nice ‘what if’ scenario, I think it could be tough be doable to capture the villages in my scenario, the bridge will be very hard if the French really defend in numbers. So it may result in something close to history.

I hope they release a Peninsular War campaign with the release of the Spanish Army along with guerrilla units. Although I think it wasn't the battles that the Spanish and British armies fought against the French the decisive factor that made France lose that campaign (it was the Spanish Guerrilla Warfare what cause more deaths among the french troops than the casualties in the battles), play different battles aside from Waterloo is always refreshing. Also, just imagine scenarios based on ambushes. It would give another dimension to the game.
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
I’d love some Peninsular miniatures, I’m really not sure how likely that is, but I’ll remain hopeful. You’re totally right as well, the guerrilla warfare was incredibly import and effective. Peninsular is my main Napoleonic interest, so I’m sure I’ll try and make it work one way or another, even if it means 3D printed stuff in the future maybe.

Excellent vlog update. It’s Extremely useful to see how you’re approaching the section of Vitoria. The table looks good and and effective, I managed to read most of the scenario notes 😆 it should work very well.The dragoons look very nice indeed. I’m sticking with my slightly ‘grubby’ look but still managing to get a lot of detail on them. I think if could source early Spanish I would be drifting back to the Peninsula as that was where my Napoleonic gaming began. Keep up the good work
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Graham, I hope it plays ok, there’s going to be loads on miniatures on the table, thankfully they will mostly start in column and attack in waves. Spanish troops would be awesome, I wonder if one of the 3D guys will do some. Once I’ve finished this joint themed project, I’m sure I’ll want to return more and to the Peninsula. Hopefully Mr Stallard will make my year and do some Stovepipe British, if not I’ll think I’ll just do it anyway.

Great Vlog. I’ve dithered about for a while trying to fathom which direction to take the ‘goal’ of my Waterloo painting / representation in. One thing I am conscious of is that the formations were established for that battle and that it was just one battle. The vast majority of games we play will probably be fictitious scenarios so, as long as each battalion I do is a real battalion I’m not too bothered if everything doesn’t fit neatly into the corps / division parcels of the day, though I will where I can (Picton’s division being an easy one to pretty much do in its entirety). As such my priorities are going to be (using the term battalion interchangeably with regiments for cavalry): What standards are included in the boxes. Yes I’m getting lazy these days and the less hunting around I have to do the better. Getting some variety in terms of colour, at least for the British and allies. Just trying to get away from the sea of red. Battalions that were at Quatre Bras Battalions that were in the Peninsular The plan will be to do some divisions, or at least brigades in full but, in other cases, do representative brigades containing one or more battalions / regiments from a real division, such as the Netherlands Cavalry Division where I’ll use 1 or 2 regiments from each of the 3 brigades to a total of 4. Same with the infantry, represent the 2nd and 3rd Netherlands Divisions by making one or more brigades containing representative battalions. Doing the whole division is easier of course, but I don’t want to end up with 7 battalions of Dutch Militia LOL.
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
I like that approach, it makes loads of sense, and that may well be the way I move forward after I’ve done with my current plans. I might also find that by swapping flags that’s I’ve got many of my bases covered for red coated infantry as it is, but I don’t mind slowly adding to this for years.
@Edward-Plantagenet2 жыл бұрын
@@MiniatureRealms Took the plunge and ordered the Peninsular book. I don't have THAT much information on the Peninsular, other than uniform detail, so this will probably be a useful addition with some information that you can actually make use of as opposed to just background information. @MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I know, I feel the guilt at the projects that are getting less videos. ACW isn’t a dead project by any stretch, but they’re on pause to allow for some of the volume Napoleonic stuff right now, I know that won’t suit everyone sadly, but I just don’t have the spare time to cover them all in the same detail at the same time, and the releases are with Napoleonics right now I guess. All I can say is my two favourite historical periods (and have been for 30+ years) are Napoleonic (primarily Peninsula and 100 days) and ACW. I’m also hooked on this scale, so both will feature a great deal, and my channel is here to stay for the long haul I think.

The Peninsular War Atlas is an excellent book. I wish there were titles for other Nap campaigns thats were as good. Any plans yet on how you’ll represent the Portuguese in your game? Maybe WG will release Spanish and Portuguese sprues one day. Thanks for the vid. Get well soon!
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
I’d love to see a small Peninsula range, I think there maybe could be British in Stovepipe Shakos with Skirmishers as well, it would certainly solve the problem of the few regiments at Waterloo who still wore them as well as making Peninsular British easier. I’d imagine that Portuguese would be expected to be ‘painting conversions’ using British troops (that’s how I intend to do them). Not sure about Spanish, unless this release comes so huge that they expand it into a full Napoleonic range I’d be surprised, and even then I’d expect to see Russians and Austrians before them. But I’m definitely not predicting any of that, I don’t think it will happen sadly.

What scale buildings do use for epics 10mm, 15mm or bigger? I noted you said the bridge is 10mm
@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
I bit of a mix really. 10mm are brilliant for not taking up too much space while still not looking out of place. Some 15mm stuff can be too large, I love Sarissa Precision stuff for example, but the footprint of their buildings are on the larger side, so not always suitable. The Spanish buildings I have for Peninsular themed games are 15mm, but very small footprint, so you get something close to the best of both worlds. I think I’ll continue to use all scales, just using what works best for the scenario at the time.

@MiniatureRealms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. No it’s battalion, it’s going to be a very busy table, but I didn’t want to ‘shrink’ the scenario too much more, definitely some artistic license with ground scale. If it were a line of British on the reverse slope of a crest it wouldn’t fit 😂, but the nature of the mobile attack that day means it will work with units arriving in column and attacking in waves. The scale of the deployment markers on the map are much smaller than the amount of men they represent, the table will be full, they’re just loose starting points really. When I write it up I’ll probably make them bigger.
