"we need more creators like you who are honest about minimalism" - No, we don't. Why? Because each to their own. For one person minimalism is one thing, but for the other it is something different, but it doesn't mean one of them is dishonest about it. Each person sees things in their own way and what is true to you may not be true to me (as for example the perspective on minimalism and honesty I am referring to here), so for you to say that "we need more honest creators" isn't accurate either, because you may deem them dishonest, but it doesn't mean they aren't honest about their minimalism.
@Sara-lr8gc2 жыл бұрын
You're totally right! Minimalism isn't only about spending less, having less or declutter. And isn't only about material things too. It's about purpose. The meaning we give to things. To people. To experiences. To environments around us. It's about the way we perceive the world and what we allow to enter our world (physical, mental and emotional). Great video, as always 👌🏻

“Minimalism” isn’t about “stuff” alone. This lifestyle is about the people in our lives and clearing out anyone who is unhealthy to us. The food you eat and how you prepare it. The books, music and films you “consume”. These things “go into you” and are apart of you. Consume what has meaning for you 🌼 Consume time with those you love and who love you🌼 Consume experiences vs things🌼 Consume work that has depth for you🌼 Feeling free from any form of being trapped is minimalism at its best and the antithesis is feeling trapped by being consumed by everything in your life (stuff/ people/ food/etc). Living each day for small things that fill you with contentment 🪴is a minimalistic life. 🕊Minimalistly, yours Kara

I voluntarily left so I could pursue a more meaningful existence. I went back to school for software engineering and I never looked back. It’s not very often that you here about this perspective, but it can be unsettling to feel like a winner all the time. I grew up in a privileged household. We weren't filthy rich or anything. However, we had a very nice house and wooded land on the river, skiing vacations in Colorado, etc. . . and we weren't abused. So it was better than growing up in a VERY wealthy household where there was abuse. I notice my siblings and myself have a tendency to think TOO highly of ourselves. I pray about this on a regular basis, because I want to be humble; because the Bible says that, "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 14:11

Beautiful video! I really appreciate your perspective. In my own experience, it is all about awareness: using both wealth and minimalism as a tool. When we can pick it up, and put it down, it is a tool. When we identify self with the tool, it can take us over. I have met people who are identified with being wealthy, merge their sense of self with it, and therefore look down on others as less than. I have also met people who are minimalist, who identify their sense of self with minimalism, and look down on people with wealth and see them as less than. It sounds like the people who you hang out with that are wealthy, have perhaps identified self with their wealth, and therefore you feel that destructive, out of alignment feeling that comes with it. Trust yourself, your inner resonance always leads you to find your own unique center point. Thank you for your amazing videos.

However the experience of this showed you that over indulgence because you can is not fulfilling either, to some of us. But that's the beauty of contrast. It shows you the differences so you can make a better choice. I find myself now being a consumer of consumables (not necessarily expensive ones). When I go out or travel, I will find myself purchasing coffee, tea, candles, incense, body care products--anything that I can consume/use up so I'm not collecting something. Becoming a parent at a very young age taught me a lot about minimising everything from things to time and money. The reason that people can think they are better than others when they have money is because it's equated with success. Success though is living life in the way that makes you happy!

Respect for these real thoughts. This is why money doesn´t make you happy. Its about beeing happy, with what you have. I knew this always, but really realised it on my journey trough Centralamerica!

Finally a rich person admits how the privilege of money and access changes their beliefs about themselves. No one is better than anyone. Good Job Nate

One of the things that makes me happy is to give to others. I think it’s kind of cringy when I see certain people with wealth beyond belief and they are completely selfish. It’s perfectly fine to spend money on yourself especially if you have earned it. I love nice cars and nice houses. It’s just when I see people on social media bragging about the 100th car they have bought or designer this or that. After a while I think, how empty.

I am 73 and still discovering my personal minimalist path to the Sun . . . however your own journey reveals itself, just remember that all is fair, and creating wealth is fine as long as no one gets left behind . . . lovin' your channel . . .

This probably sounds silly but I have a video request. You mentioned a long while back that you eventually wanted to have a farm. I thought it would be cool if you talked about what you think that would look like and what the goal was behind it. I'm a garden nerd and plan on quitting my (decent) job in January to start a organic market garden. Great video by the way!

Nate, thanks for such a transparent, honest and humble video. For me, it’s the best one I’ve seen from you yet. I learn more from you seeing how you live (I just learned that your truck is a Ford), how you think, what you feel, what you have (or don’t), who you hang out with (or don’t), your mindset, values, fears, joys, dreams. And got some of that in this video and I must say that I learned a lot more than when you pitch a financial product and/or tips. It takes a big man to come clean on their values to the entire world, and you are a big man my friend. Thank you.

Very well said Nate! What I’ve learned is that a degree of materialism is okay. There are certain items that ground a person and bring personal fulfillment. For example, I have a special necklace and painting from my great grandmother. But yes we need to be aware of our consumption of things that don’t bring personal fulfillment and don’t serve a real purpose. Again, awesome video 💙Look forward to more

I am in no way a minimalist, but I do strive to consume less. I've recently found the best way for me to do that is to be my own producer. I've started growing and preserving my own food. A huge chunk of my budget was going towards food at the grocery store or eating out. It does appear that I have many things but a good bit of that is for food production. To each his own. Minimalism is what works for the individual.

I live a minimalist life style, every thing I own I can fit in my 4x4. Except the way I do it is to buy the absolute best product for the few items I need. I only replace things when they break and live in comfort and just use what I need.

I believe minimalism isn't so much a lifestyle as an exercise in identifying what is important vs stuff that is a distraction from the important. Therefore you can be a minimalist but still enjoy things that you're into. Maybe once a year or at a routine interval you need to consciously reviewing your choices and direction.

Thank you so much for making this video! This is probably my favorite video you’ve done and it’s reminded me that every now and then we all need to take a step back, unplug, and evaluate our consumption and how we’re living our lives. Time is the most precious resource we have that we can’t ever get more of and how we spend it is the most important decision we can make. Thank you.

Nate, your honesty is appreciated and I'm so glad and happy for you that you caught yourself before you fell into the greed event horizon that sort of happens when you're around rich people too much. It's like a dark energy with a gravity to it, that inflated sense of superiority. Be well Nate and enjoy your cool outdoor desk. The air out there is probably cleaner than a plane cabin where the champagne flows at 40,000ft.

Very interesting video. I’m getting the sense that it’s not so much about minimalism not working, but you having to contend with the fact that spending time with the more affluent members of your network compels you to make choices that contradict the ideals of minimalism (the environmental aspect of it at least). Maintaining connections with people who value vastly different kind of lifestyle to yours (for economical or ethical reasons) will be a challenge and by default introduce conflict. Also, there’s research on the link between wealth and levels of empathy, which confirms your personal experience of disconnect from the issues an average person faces in life. It’s interesting to know that this disconnect can happen if you previously led modest lifestyle or come from a working class background and rose to financial security later in life. We’re all prone to this I guess.

When you are a good person, you are more deserving than other cheaters. Yes, having ego over money or bring wealthy is wrong. Ego is root of all evil. But knowing your value & self worth is important as hell tbh. You should know if you're better than others. Not in a narcissistic way. But in a way that's self reflective. Only if you are a good person thougj

Such a great realizations! I’m in the same point where I realized, it was hard to relate to others and lost my authenticity. So, on a personal level, going back to basic and staying true to myself. This shows you are growing and learning more about yourself on a deeper level 🤍 Thank you for sharing!!

I believe it's about finding a healthy balance between being spiritual and living in this modern day society, there's some things we can't change about how our society has advanced over the years but it's up to us to keep ourselves grounded and connected with ourselves and not lose site of our natural state that's why it's good to be out in nature and enjoying the simple things in life .....there's nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy the finer things/ luxuries in life just keep yourself in check and be humble ... it's all up to the individual but we all need to find time to be more compassionate and to respect one another focus on a persons character and heart not what they have materialisticaly

I know a few people who are actually poor but they think they are better than others, smarter, more deserving, etc. They value themselves above others... which is a natural way to be. But it can be a bad thing because by doing this, you don't necessarily support others in their goals.
