The bathroom was where I did my first real decluttering. It was about 5 am and I had been looking at before and after decluttering pictures while rocking a sick baby. After I put him down I went into the bathroom and started pitching stuff into the trash can. Filled it up quickly! The next day I filled up a box with still-good items and took them to a shelter for pregnant women. Lots of nail polish, sample sized toothpaste, hair products I didn't like, and fancy spa products people had given me. In this season, my skin is happy enough with splashing with water in the shower. I was finally ready to let go of the obligation to use it. And the new empty space in the cabinet was so pleasing that I was hooked and started looking for more stuff to declutter!

Same here. My husband is a hoarder, and it stresses him out when I throw away things that are still "perfectly good" - and he's more important to me than the house. So I'm working on the other end of the equation: limiting what comes in. For me, a buying freeze is a no-brainer. My energies generally are spent on getting HIM not to bring anything new in!

I always find my bathroom cabinets get cluttered up after Christmas when I get loads of toiletry products gifted to me. I’m allergic to many of the products (but get them anyways despite telling people this lol) and found I used to keep a hold of them for years because I felt ungrateful throwing them out. I recently discovered my local supermarket has a discretionary hygiene basket where you can donate unused toiletry products for people who need them. I feel much better giving the things away to someone who really appreciates them while still respecting the people who give me Christmas gifts. 😊

We are lucky to have nieces and nephews and neighbours who usually take shampoos etc. Plus homeless shelters always need donations (and we have a friend who works at one so it's easy for us to get items to them). I have always tried to be fairly minimal but haven't been maintaining well for the last couple of years. But I did a big purge of my vanity (the same model as yours). Old eyeliner and mascara that didn't live up to its smudge proof promise. I have now faced facts that I am not going to return it, and keeping it isn't putting the money I spent back in the bank (you're right!!) ;) The reward is it's so much easier to find what I need quickly. Thanks!

You’ve inspired me again. We have no drawers in either of our small bathrooms but I can still remove stuff to make it look better. I notice we have about 4 lotions on the go. I need to remove all but one so my family actually finishes one before moving to the next. I think a lot of us could also work on using up what we have before buying more. Especially in these times, our family is working on not letting anything go to waste. With all that space in the bottom drawer I would totally fill it up with toilet paper. :) Even as an aspiring minimalist I buy that in bulk, pandemic or not.

Thank you for such a great video! I’m an empty nester and a hairstylist. Believe when I say I have NO extra hair stuff Between my daughter and step. Daughters and nieces , they wipe me out. Here’s a tip...I have a clear bin i my very small cabinet in my only bathroom... I keep all my underwear in it. Something so little of an idea has been great for me. As a stylist who sells hair care products, I actually am very conscious on what I offer to my clients. I will remember what I know they purchase from and go through the possible use of those at their home before buying something new that does the same thing (at least for what they need it to do ). I do have those who really really want to buy something new!

I love your videos! They are super inspiring and have literally changed my life. I couldn’t clean up because I had no room to put anything away. Your videos encouraged me to change all of that. I have extra space in every cupboard and closet. What sealed the deal for me was deciding to donate my stuff to Goodwill and not have a yard sale. I would tackle one room at a time and load the car and immediately take the boxes to Goodwill. I even finished my attic. Now my home is much easier to maintain and it’s remarkable how easy it is to manage. I have an identical twin too! She has always been the queen of throw it out, me not even close. But now I’m like my sister. If you don’t use it-loose it. I have kept up with every room in my house accept for my bedroom closet and I plan another purge very soon! Keep up with your encouragement! My identical twin and I love it !!

I needed your first three minutes of this video. I’ve been struggling with not being able to get rid of higher end products that I will never use because I already paid for them and may come up with a reason down the road for them again.

I went right into my bathroom and checked if anything useless crept back in after my last declutter, LOL! Proud to say that everything stayed simplified. ^_^

Thank you for this segment. After my mom passed, and going through areas of her home like the bathroom and linen closet, while she maintained a pretty simple semi minimalistic lifestyle, I was overwhelmed with the guilt of getting rid of things that were still good. I ran into so many challenges in even locating charities that would /could use them despite items that may have only been used 1 time, lotions, hair products etc. it’s been 2 years now and I’ve tried to use up as much of these things that I can but I also like what I like so it’s been a well intended initiative. Time to just let them go.

haha! I need to show my husband this video. He hates throwing things out because it's throwing away money. Good one!

There's groups called "buy nothing" and they're hyper local groups to give away and recieve things, help, etc for free. It makes it SO much easier to give stuff away

Yes, getting rid of unused bathroom products is such a freeing feeling! (although, acknowledging the wasted money, was tough, at first). Both your bathrooms look great.....and your hair does, too, BTW! I think it looks very natural, and accentuates your eye-color.

Haha!! That was such a good point and tactic to help us understand how getting rid of stuff doesn't cause us to lose money in our bank accounts...you got me laughing. But in all seriousness, you are so inspiring and have such a great way of getting to the heart of minimizing. I think we "pack rats" all come from the same mold (afraid we will "need it someday"...but you have given us a better perspective on our "stuff". There is freedom in purging. I just took a trip to the Salvation Army to drop off a whole car load. I am taking my time and find I will return back to my clutter zones but learning the value of empty real estate, less is more, and saving time not having to look for things because they are hidden somewhere. I love your channel. Dawn, you are so authentic, down to earth, and joyful. Thank you for the way you give us such practical tips and invite us into your world.

This was very helpful- the bank account example made all the difference, seeing that I continued to hold onto a few baskets of things (I still haven't used), even after cleaning out our bathroom closet and cabinet. I can't wait to take it to another level, so it finally feels more simplified and we can enjoy our space better :)

We loved just playing with plastic measuring cups, funnels, basters, spoons. Even a small colander was fun.

Oh, Dawn. I love this video, made me giggle! You are so cute! You are one of my favorite youtubers! I ran up to my bathroom cabinet right after watching this and I think I got it decluttered for the last time! Started the real declutter journey about a year and a half ago, found your channel about 3 months ago, binge watched almost all your videos and its made me repurge for real. And now with a family of five, I feel like I've finally made it to about where you are and it feels soooooo great! Thank you for your continued inspiration! 💕

I am applying this approach for my traveling toiletries, too, and I am pleased! I deferentiated them by what I use in the hotel bathroom and items I use by the bed. The bathroom kit bag is packed within the overall toiletries small tote and can be grabbed and placed in the bathroom without depriving me of my bedside stuff! Just reverse on check out! I moved 4 states away in the last month and I did purge toiletries/makeup/first aid/bathroom stuff as I packed. I limited what I kept using the boundary of containers I learned here. I unpacked the toiletries box in my new home and am satisfied. Now I know how many extras I have on hand and will not have to buy much for a while! Thanks for tips that help us all--not only for families!

I also think of the bank account anytime I’m tempted to ‘try’ the latest product. In 2019 I decided to have a no spend year, I only bought essentials and used what I had. It was easier than I expected! It became a great challenge, for gifts I gave only experiences, such as vouchers to shows, a day out, cinema tickets or a fast car driving experience. (My partner) we socialised a lot and I reused outfits instead of buying new. It was all very liberating, 5 months gone in this year and I am so conscious of my purchases, I’m mindful that nearly every thing we buy has an environmental impact, an emotional tie and financial implications. (I’ve saved a lot) 😁

Love the open shelving idea. I currently have a shelving unit in the same kind of space. Have grown to dislike it b/c of all the dust it accumulates! Think I'll show the hubby this idea! Love love love your info! Thank you!

Just stop buying in the first place and save that $80 of trash and the environment too! I just stick to: don't buy another until the last is actually all gone!!

Yes ! It's a self imposed discipline . It has to be really horrible almost dective for me to chuck a $28 ...gel or lotion. Just not my style...but by all means stop buying till you unload your mistakes by using them up

That’s been the biggest change I’ve made as a result of buying Marie Kondo’s book five years ago-I ask myself if I really need or want something before I buy it. 9/10 the answer is no and I don’t leave the store with it. Online, I put stuff in my cart and leave it for 24 hours. If I don’t remember to go back and buy those things, I didn’t really want or need them. Best way to diminish clutter is to keep it out of the house to begin with 😊

You inspired me to look through my bathroom supplies. I thought I only had back stock of things I use, but actually I had stuff going 'out of date' because I no longer use the same items. I'm now gifting them on Freecycle so they will actually get used so thank you!
