Not a fan of loafers at all, so I would remove that one and bring the minimal collection to 4: 1) Black Oxfords 2) Brown Derby captoes (not a fan of brogues and wingtips). I think these shoes are versatile enough to be used instead of loafers whenever loafers are considered. 3) Chukka boots (But instead of the original light sand color model, I prefer Clark's beeswax Bushacre model) 4) White sneaker - Adidas Stan Smith Besides those four for style purposes, function-wise I think another 3 shoes are required for a minimal collection: 5) Hiking/Winter boots, to be used for both inclement weather and rough terrain conditions 6) Sport/training shoes (the clean white sneakers above should not be used for actual sports) 7) Sandals to be comfortable at home and also at the beach. I particularly like the Adidas Adilette shower sandals, super comfortable

Hey Jeff, I absolutely agree with everything as always, however, having been a Cole Haan store manager myself, I have built a pretty versatile wardrobe especially around shoes. I must admit that I have moved up towards more classic and niche brands such Allen Edmonds, To boot New York and all since...I would have to get rid of the Chukka rather than the Chelsea boots. In fact the Chelsea is more versatile than the chukka. Most people would prefer a pair of Chelsea boots with a suit rather than a Chukka with suit, and a lot of that has to do with the fact the Chukka is geared more towards moderate and casual look due to its wide open lacing/Vamp, while the Chelsea has no lacing and can be easily covered up with any pants. Don't get me wrong, they're both versatile shoes, but based on my experience, the Chelsea wins the versatility contest. Great Content and I love watching you bro!!!

Great list. I was really shocked that Chelsea boots didnt make it. The top 5 I love are Chelsea boots(black leather), monk strap(brown), loafers(oxblood), wingtips(dark brown), and white AF1. I chose the black leather boots first cause I love the look of a whole cut shoe, and I don't care much for laces.

Brown Timberland Boots - Great looking for cold weather and for daily wear on the job (not everyone has office gigs). Chuck Tailors High Tops - this is great for the gym or casual use. Rockport Brown Leather Walking Shoes - It's a great business casual shoe that can be worn around the year. Runner up Vans low profile sneakers - Great for casual and or the gym. Dockers Boat shoes - Works for causual or business casual.

Great video yet again, Jeff; the fact that you drop a daily video does not deter from the overall quality of the content. Minimalism is indeed relative, but when it comes to shoes, your video presents what could be an exercise in insanity. By which I mean that for any person who enjoys/ collects shoes and kicks of all types, picking five distinct shoes is next to impossible because of the sentiment attached to the shoe (i.e., your love of the Jordan Is). As always, I apologize in advance for the length of this comment because I know this is going to be quite long due to the fact I intend to justify my selections for the sake of discussion. Note: The following list is based on my personal preference/ aesthetic with close attention paid to each selection's relative utility as related to my lifestyle which is admittedly a bit freewheeling, as well as to how each selection pairs is able to be paired with many clothing choices, integrates seamlessly in various and diverse social occasions, and the ability of the selection to withstand the test of time (e.g., quality and stylistically). I have do have to throw in two caveats: one, the following list is actually 5 + 1, allowing slack for one pair of running shoes/ trainers that are reserved for the gym, road, trail or for whatever environment(s) one exercises or works out; and two, since the word "show" was used, I did not include sandals; I am a big fan of OluKai sandals (flip flops) and have no problem wearing them in the Spring, Summer, or Fall, as they are of a high quality, have the requisite utility, and add a bit of casual but proper whimsy to many outfit choices. This may not be the most practical choice for some, but for me, I dig it. That said, here is my list of the five shoes that I would pull from my closet if forced to pick (it is 5:12p, CST, so let's see how difficult this is by accounting for the length of time it takes decide whilst writing/ editing a white paper on communication apps improving clinical outcomes in rural American hospitals - I do type quickly): 1. A Black Oxford: Spot on here, Jeff. For me, though, this would not even make my first cut if I did not have to regularly attend events where a traditional black shoe is required. Whether it comes to clothes or shoes, I do not wear much black, hence my ambivalence; however, there are occasions, as Jeff stated, where a black oxford is the only appropriate shoe. And for that reason alone, despite the the price-per-wear of the shoe being high for me, opting for a a low-quality shoe is simply not an option because on the occasions where they are required, a poor quality shoe will stand out in a bad way; here, the shoes do make the man. My preference is an oxford that is of high quality, is minimal in its style (i.e., no wingtips or cap toes) and at a price point that is higher in my range, but one in which I feel comfortable paying. Again price is something relative, but you need not break the bank on your investment so long is what you are buying is worth it to you. For example, Cole Hahn's quality to price ratio is perfect for most anyone who does not want to go all-in but wants a stylish, quality shoe that is both timeless and will hold up over that time. 2. A Versatile Brown Shoe or Dress Boot: This is the hardest one for me, as I prefer the versatility of brown to black, and the brown oxford would be my number 1 choice if I could get away without owning a pair in black. Now, is choosing both a black and a brown oxford redundant for this exercise? In my opinion, it is not, as you will be wearing these much more often. Whether it is an oxford, a brogue, or something else, pick a colour that will go with suits, trousers, and jeans. From here you may add accent or style with a cap toe or wingtip, as well-said by Jeff, if you are comfortable with that - a plain brown oxford is never off the table for me. With that in mind, I would either opt for the latter or find a dress boot like the Chelsea, a zip, or plain boot. As I will discuss below, my choice here would be a plain dress boot, as the simplicity will never go out of style, it is a bit different, and you have something is perfect for most formal settings (e.g., a non-black tie wedding or function), semi-formal settings, and casual/ social events or dates...again, as well-stated by the OG. 3. A Chukka Boot: 3 for 3, Jeff, but after this, we diverge. Suede, light to mid-brown Clarks Desert Chukka have always been my go-to. Enough said. 4. A Service Boot: I am a fan of boots because of their utility, durability, and in some instances, can work with the right suit should one want to diverge from the normal. Because I chose a plain dress boot with the second selection, I could go for a service boot with a cap toe if I wanted to add variety and a nice, subtle accent; however, just like owning black and brown oxfords, I would also have no problem with a plain service boot. This is my brown broken record, but I would choose a brown service boot that while possibly similar to a colour of one of the above, varies enough so as not to overlap. I do own pairs of bespoke boots, but I default to any pair of Frye service boots matching the colour criterion above. They go with everything; they are well made; and for price-per-wear, you cannot get much better. 5. Here is where the OluKai flip flop would have come in. However, since I ruled that out above, I am almost at a loss. Like black oxfords, I am not generally not a fan of white sneakers...the exceptions to this rule are the Adidas Stan Smith (RESPECT, Jeff) and Rod Laver models, and one other to which I will get. Because everyone needs a sneaker in their collection that may be worn with a suit down to jeans, I am torn between my Vans OG, either in leather or suede, my Epaulet brown leather tennis trainers (low-profile), and my Acne Studios Adrian Turnips in white...which are slowly being edged out by the Acne Studios Branded velcro sneakers in red / navy that I recently purchased; velcro is not for the young and very old anymore, and despite this being my first foray into velcro sneakers, I am digging them. This selection may be a cop out, but I could grab any and be happy; the only reason why I included three is because of the respective price points and very different styles of each. The Begrudged Cut List (in no particular order): 1. Any Adidas Gazelle, wether the OG version or the modern release. In fact, let's just say every reliable sneaker in my collection save for the pairs mentioned in selection 5. This includes all of my Nikes whether custom, special edition, or general release; the few Jordan/ Jumpman releases that I do collect (RESPECT to the 1s); my collection of Puma Suedes; and and any upscale or random sneakers that I own. I do love sneakers almost as much as boots, but they are, for the most part, out. 2. My tan Red Wing Heritage boots. This was a very depressing cut. 3. My Grey Chaco Thompson boots. I do like to experiment with pairing casual/ semi-casual brands that are known or more with outdoor brands; they are generally lumped into two very different style buckets but happen to work well if correctly paired; the same applies for clothes (e.g., a Patagonia or Stio item as one of several layers). While not conflicting or overlapping with the chukka, these boots have become a staple for me and have garnered many compliments and questions.

I'm a bit more casual as a university student, but I agree with most of your list. Actually have a video on IG: instagram.com/p/BZU1Zb2FPOm/?igshid=zmy5yo7v4kr3 I've adapted the list a bit. Would probably go for a a black cap toe oxford (formal, good for any interview, funeral, or office setting), a pair of brown laceup boots, brown loafers that can worn without socks and are good for any formal occasion less than business, white sneakers, and a statement sneaker like anything from Adidas or a an Air Jordan. It hurts that I can include a brown dress shoe, but while a black cap toe is less stylish, it's more versatile as it's appropriate for virtually any situation that would require you to wear a tie or button up shirt.

My list: 1) AE black plain-toe derby dress shoe, 2) AE brown split-toe blucher dress shoe, 3) Keen gore-tex hiking boots, 4) Everlast white sneakers, and 5) AE maritine boat shoe. Removed: Too many. The black derby and the brown blucher allows me to dress up into formal but still dress down into casual covering a wide range. I had choosen the derby as a plain-toe and the blucher as split-toe so they have a different silohouette from each other as not be twins in different colors. The hiking boots since I go out into the wilds a lot and can be used as rain boots. My Everlast sneakers because I grew-up across the street from Gleason's Gym when it use to be in NYC one block from Madison Square Garden and remember the Boxing Greats that trained there. Since my derby and blucher cover a winde range I would skip the penny loafer and go with my boat shoes. The green boat shoes give a splash of color for the warmer seasons and goes great with khakis, jeans or shorts.

Jeff, Jeff, JEFF.! You know I love your videos and I know we have to be fashion related, but you're killing me with only five pairs of shoes in the minimalist collection, bro.! I agree with your choices and selection, but only with a gun to my head.! Five is WAY TOO SMALL a number. I have to go with 10. I would add the double monk, a second Oxford (in Burgundy or a dark color), another brogue (opposite the first one chosen, so I'd make it a long wing), a whole cut, and I would have to add a Timbetland, or other boot, even a Frye, or something tough for my rugged look. Left off of this list would be any one of my wing tip dress boots, a dress sandal, and or a third boot. Come to think of it, I would be very tempted to add another loafer of some sort. I have been building the wardrobe (shoes especially) for a minute, and five is cutting it REAL thin. Shucks, I have five or more pairs of everything you described, and about 15-20 pairs in rotation at a given time. Shoes vary your fashion look so much until it can be a major decision as to who is in or out of this season's rotation. And there are always a few pairs you keep going back to all year round. So how about in addition to the minimalist collection, you do something on a robust collection, or a video about how many pairs one may have over time. I have some AE's that are vintage and over 20 years young that look brand spanking new because of good care and rotation. The same with several other brands and styles. I admit the Gators and Crocs don't see as much time anymore, and I am far removed from the Nunn Bush and Stacy Adams days of youth. Just my two cents worth. Stay well, be stylish always.

But I do find myself only wearing black oxford shoes to interviews and semi formal social events. As a result I have a grand total of two pairs of black dress shoes. Oxfords and derbies. Can we get a classic cable knit sweater style video? The off white, cream color has been tough to pair up in outfits. Definitely a classic piece for the winter. Thanks!

Been following style OG for a year now. Great video on minimalist shoe list. Will it be cool too if chuka is replaced by a pair of full boots like red wing iron rangers or wolverine 1k or alden indy. That would be perfect in my opinion.

I agree with your list. Especially 2 of the 3 you left off, I love my chelsea's and double monk strap. In place of the jordans, I would put my shell toe adidas with the black stripes.

Not the Jordan 1s! That does hurt but I definitely agree. Great advice as always. BTW, are you going to do a review on hats for the upcoming season?

My minimalist men's shoe collection: burgundy double monk straps. It fit's so well on my life style that the only thing I am missing is the black cap toe oxford. That one is definitely a must have!

Pretty much my shoe collection. I don’t have time to overthink what shoes I’ll be wearing, so I only keep a few for every occasion.

OG, I'm loving the minimalist series you're doing. Thank you so much. It's helping me out a lot. By the way OG I haven't seen to many hats videos from you. Do you think the OG can help me get my hat game up. Thank you so much for all you do.
