A note on the chorizo: food of any kind is officially not allowed to bring into the United States. Not even vacuum packed. If they find it, they will seize it and you may be fined. In case there's an American watching this and plans on bringing a bunch of cheese from Switzerland and sausages from Germany. Do so at your own risk. :) Many have been doing it without being caught (particularly if you're a citizen), but it is against the law.

My husband & I pack half our clothes in one suitcase, half in the other so if one suitcase gets lost, we still each have clothes. We have experienced carry-ons being checked even if they are "legal" sized. We'll be in Germany six weeks this year, every year! Living our dream! Good idea :) I've found that instead of a suitcase, a backpack of carry on size is perfect - easier to navigate with and less likely to be taken to check at the gate in case of a lack of space. With my backpack, which is a hiking type backpack, packing cubes are essential to keep everything neat. I always unpack right away at my destination and use the bag as a day bag when going on trips at my destination :) Recently added a small sling as a personal item to my travel setup and it's been great!

All it takes is one trip to Europe with way too much luggage to convince you never EVER do that again. I now travel with carry-on only. Took my teenaged son to Europe for 12 days a few years ago and he was convinced we couldn't do it with carry-on bags, but I insisted on it. Halfway through the trip, we saw two girls struggling to get on a train with enormous suitcases and shoulder bags, and he looked at me with newfound appreciation. A proud parenting moment for sure!

I learnt lesson as knew bag would be lost when came out at Cdmx 14 days lost plus so much money.. no compensation bag turned up ..gave away laptop then big mistake lost all photos which although backed up twice hadnt worked..huge lesson. Now going for 30l minimal it s not about the money as will still have to pay extra from Europe but just feeling of security where I ll be so will my 1 and only bag whether it be bus plane or train.

Thanks! I want to become a minimalist traveler but I have a long way to go! 😅 I have a couple of tips: 1. Many sinks have either no plug or a leaky plug, so I always travel with a flat rubber drain stopper (inexpensive), which you place over the drain hole, making it possible to wash clothes in any sink. 2. If an airplane is running out of overhead space, the airline often starts checking all wheeled carry-ons at the gate. I pack a large, thin tote in my wheeled carry-on, so I can transfer important items (like medications, jewelry, electronics) into the tote bag, which I can then carry on (while my half-empty wheeled bag is checked). I've been traveling carry on only for a while now and have traveled with people who have been forced to check their bags at the gates. (They always have a wheeled hard case and I always have a travel back pack, so my stuff almost never gets forced to be checked). I never thought about the tote trick before. I always make a small package within my rolling carry-on with medications, contact lenses, essential toiletries and a clean set of clothing in case the dreaded gate check happens. Then you can just grab it without having to do any critical thinking.

I have the same experience as @OdinsSage, my backpack almost never gets checked in case of not enough space in the cabin! I find there are many other benefits to travelling with a backpack over a suitcase, the most important one being it way easier to manage, but maybe that is personal :)

I want to go to Norway. I have always lived in Orego,n but have recently discovered I'm 96% Norwegian and 4% Scandinavian. I also found out I have probably about 50% Sami heritage as well that was never talked about when I was a small child. It's been a fun journey discovering my roots. I'm sad my great grandparents came to America, because when I hear about Norwegian lifestyle, values and common beliefs, it resonates deeply with me. So I'd like to go there and see what it's like for myself. I'm nearly 70 years old and I'm not sure I'll get the chance, but one can dream and possible do a little planning as well.

I’m also a big fan of “smart suitcases” lol. I found this “airline employee” bag at the thrift store years ago and I never looked back. It has separate dividers for clothing etc and toiletries. And all kinds of smart pockets and sections. Also an outer section for electronics. I also use the packing cubes for several categories. My cubes came with a laundry bag. Lol. Dream vaca is a whole summer European tour. All the cultures and variety and all so close all around me. From the fancy Paris coffee and food to backpacking in Greece and everything in between. I want to see and experience it all. Lol.

I have a caveat for the "wear your heavy/bulky pieces on the plane", layering is still always better. If you have several stops on the trip or need to change accommodations, it sucks to not be able to stuff them in your luggage when leaving your things at the hotel or say if you're taking a train ride to the next destination, you don't want to have the heavy coat or the heavy boots if it's not cold. If at all possible, the bulky stuff should fit in the bag, even you have to use the expansion option, just so you know you have the wiggle room.

I used to get so anxious preparing for travel (even with a checklist). I’d pull out suitcases nearly 2 weeks prior & start adding things I “didn’t want to forget “. Of course this led to over packing & I didn’t need half the stuff I packed. Now, I pack a day or 2 prior & tell myself I can pick up anything I forgot if I can’t get by without it. I haven’t needed to buy anything and I don’t over pack. I also try to keep it to a carry on size.

My must have multipurpose travel items are: Binder clips - can be used for wardrobe malfunctions, towel clips to beach chairs, chip clip, closing that pesky inch of curtain that won't shut, anchor your charging cable to a desk, a million uses. Carabiner hook like the hero clip - its uses end where your imagination does Sarong- blanket, scarf, shawl, privacy curtain, dig towel, hair wrap. Love it Holiday Christmas decoration suction cups - to hang my soap bar pouch or loofah so its not touching the dirty bathroom walls/floor

I LIVE by the “check off the digital list on the way, uncheck it on the way back” rule! If you have an iPhone, the Reminders app now supports templates in iOS 16, so I have a template for my packing list. It had everything I could possibly need, and then I just customize it based on what I need for that specific trip! SUPER helpful!

Hack for travelling on airlines who are strict on carry-on weight (such as Ryanair & EasyJet). Invest in a light weight rain jacket with LOTS and LOTS of pockets and then fill them with your heaviest small items such as chargers, batteries, Kindles, etc. As long as you don’t look like a Michelin Man, its a convenient way to avoid these items adding to your carry-on weight and no one weights the passengers (yet!). When you go through security, just pop the jacket on the belt and then when you are through you can stash the items into your bag!! As for my dream destination at the moment … it remains Antarctica!!

I also love packing dresses. Or: a camisole + solid, black leggings (that you can wash and dry overnight in the hotel) + a couple of elegant tunics that are light, cover your bottom but make you feel stylish (I have lovely prints). They can be dressed up or down with the accessories and don't take much room. I like variety and the tunics fold down tiny so I can take 3 and bring 2 leggins + 2 camisoles. A blazer, a cardigan + a thin jacket, I'm good for a week in the summer, in any city. Together with a T-shirt the leggings can become lounge wear, fine for a longer walk or can take you to the beach. Versatility is good.

Great video full of very useful tips, Marissa! And I have used the Dr Bronner's liquid soap when camping. I don't love it for my hair, but can deal with it for a wash or two. For air travel - to help minimize the liquids, I take a shampoo BAR that's also formulated for my face (has goat milk, thyme, oatmeal, aloe, french clay...) as I too have very sensitive skin and eczema. I use that bar soap for hands, body, and laundry too. Here's another BIG tip that I don't think I've heard on any of the multitude of packing videos I've watched: if you're traveling with other people (I often fly with my mom, husband, or best friend) see what items you can SHARE / co-pack. Examples: my mom and I have similar skin and hair, and use similar products. So rather than EACH taking our own individual supply, which would essentially duplicate these items, we will only take one curling iron or hair straightener, facial cleanser, moisturizer, sunblock, and share them. When traveling with my husband, we share toothpaste, lotion, hairbrush, bottle of contact solution, body wash/soap/shampoo/sunblock, electronic chargers/adapters/power bank, etc. Adjust this advice to your comfort/hygiene level, of course - not everyone is comfortable sharing a hairbrush with their family. I draw the line at toothbrushes and deodorant though - lol.

My husband and I went to Hawaii for two weeks and we each had one carry-on each. I hate checking luggage because it could get lost and you always have to wait for it so I couldn’t even tell you the last Time that I checked a bag. It’s been years. Dr. Bronners is fantastic! So many uses and you can buy unscented or other basic scents. We traveled to Europe several years ago and shifted to the carryon bag for clothing. It was so freeing! We washed in between when needed and had no problems. Best option!

We bring a little magnet for us and some delicacy for the family, but we still travel with 2 suitcases for 4 people. If you travel with suitcases, make sure to pack everybody's stuff into both suitcases, so in case of one going missing you have a minimal set of cloths for everybody!

we did a 3 week trip to Europe (Netherlands, Southern Germany and Paris) - the weather varied quite a bit on our trip, so I struggled to pack all the right things, without overpacking. I watched lots of videos like this one beforehand. I often start "pre-packing" at least a week before the trip, and narrow it down progressively. My husband and I each took a 19 inch carry-on suitcase and a backpack (as our personal item). This allowed space for our rain jackets, power adapters/converters, my camera, and bringing home a couple of consumable souvenirs (my favorite cookies, and a new pair of shoes - lol).

I travel carry on only with skirts from RipSkirt Hawaii which are my regular day wear and black and navy blue tops which are interchangeable with each skirt, a bathing suit, nightgown and underwear, a pair of Xero Shoes sandals and Xero Shoes hiking shoes. We traveled in two climates last summer so I reduced the number of skirts and added 1 pair of hiking pants, 1 pair of jeans, 3 long sleeve tops, a fleece jacket and a rain jacket. We were traveling for 5 weeks. I had a packable lightweight tote for any extras I bought (souvenirs), a small lightweight backpack that I used as a carry on and for hiking in the cold climate and a small crossbody purse to use in the warm climate. It only took losing my luggage 1 time for me to switch to carry on only. The only way to go! Happy Trails!

Dream vacation location is Ireland. We're focusing on closer locations until my hubby is a bit more open to longer/flying distances. Dr. Bronner's is the best! You can also get it in bars rather than liquid. They have a sensitive/baby/unscented version that is wonderful for sensitive skin. You can use it for everything.

I literally buy most of my toiletries when I get there and whatever we don’t use up we leave behind for housekeeping or recycle them. The only thing I bring is my make up as it’s more expensive. Laundry I just have sent out wherever we are as it’s usually fairly affordable. If you have an airbnb a host may even include laundry

I do a lot of these already and I totally owe it to my awesome sister who taught me many ways to pack simply. I am the best at organizing everything while she's the one making the lists and figuring out how to multi-use what. The more I've practiced and being married now, I always end up with less luggage than my husband. 😁 For souvenirs, I've been collecting a single postcard of the location I go to. They're usually inexpensive and the most accessible and you can fit them anywhere. You can put them in an album or make them wall art.

I can’t get over the fact that you wear that Floyd shirt so much as a Floyd super fan. Also my husband is very adamant that he can only wear a shirt once and pants twice. So he brings stuff that is fairly worn out and then throws it out at the start of the trip. He also uses vaccum seal bags to get the stuff flat enough. I’m 99% sure he won’t hand wash things which is my go to when my favourites get dirty on a trip.

Wow, Marissa! Me and my family also went to Spain for a month, this summer, near Valencia. One day we even visited the Oceanografic and went to the dolphins show. Hi, I love your videos and I have watched most of them. I always find your tips very down to earth and practical. I really can resonate as I am trying to become a minimalist (used to be crazy about buying clothes) but I also love colours and most minimalist bloggers only use boring white and beige esthetic when it comes to clothes or home decor. It's nice to see some colours in your videos! However, there is one thing that I would like to point out. I am sure you enjoyed the dolphin show, I dreamt about it as a kid too. Until I watched a documentary called Blackfish on Netflix. It was really eye-opening on how these companies mistreat marine mammals. I recommend it 100%. After that, you'll see these shows from a completely different perspective.

omg I was already doing the heavy clothes layering thing wayy before I first heard of minimalism lol. I haven't been on a plane in like 10 years but what I also used to do, even tho that's not exactly minimalist lol, was to wear a coat with enormous pockets and put my electronics and all my snacks and a bunch of other things in there, that way I also managed to travel internationally with just a carry-on 😂

My dream is to go to Scotland! I’ve only gone on 3 trips that required flying. One was a school trip that had a travel group that organized it. One was a humanitarian trip where we had to check things in to take with us. The only personal one I went on, I was so scared of bringing too big of a bag that I brought too small of one and underpacked. I wished I had brought one more outfit with me since it was cooler than expected where I went.

I used my expandable 19L backpack (typically used for college) with a clamshell opening as a personal bag for a 3-4 day trip. No other luggage. It does not fit within the dimension limits of Frontier Airlines l in its expanded form, but it can in its compressed form. It was essentially a built in compression “cube” that I could keep expanded during the trip.. though I did not end up using it expanded. I wish it was lighter, but I do (currently) prefer the sleek professional look over a thinner bulging material. The laptop padding was unnecessary for the trip -could make do with a detachable sleeve for school days. Also wish the built in pouch for liquids is detachable for TSA. I went with a ziplock bag for my liquids just in case I would be asked to pull them out. (Was on the departure flight TSA check, but not on the return check). For school: wish the clamshell design has a latch method to where I can open the main compartment and lift the backpack in the air without gravity making it fall all the way open in clamshell mode. Only happens at home, but still a nuisance when it does happen.

On our family of 4 Last trip to Texas from California, we only took a carry on suitcase. We ended up finding good prices on the stores we liked on clothes and shoes. So on our way back we added a checked bag(15 dlls on a outlet store) and we put most of our old clothes and brougth back our new shoes and clothes in our carry ons. We paid like 40 dlls extra and every body was happy

I want to return to Stockholm! Miss it (went there a lot from 2018-2020, before the pandemic. What I learned to do: My hack is to bring compact clothing: 2 pairs of black, solid leggings and 3 tunics with a nice print that are long enough to cover my backside. I wear a camisole/spaghetti strap t-shirt underneath them. All of these hand-wash easily and can dry overnight. Stuff that dries quickly (silk, merino, functional textiles from athletisure brands that look good on the street too) or can be stuffed (thin down jacket) are great. In autumn or winter I wear one good (casual or more formal) suit and just bring extra blouses to combine them with. Bring no more than 2 pairs of extra shoes and 1 small backpack and one small handbag/a foldable one like Longchamp. You can also use the handbags as a packing cubes or pouches and roll up their unclipped straps. On my last trip I used a small Desigual handbag with a loud statement pattern, to put my toiletry and make-up bags in and then at the destination I clipped the cross-body strap on and used it as a handbag with an otherwise all dark, muted capsule wardrobe. Use panty-liners and handwash your underwear OR use a good packing cube and bring enough underwear. I'd rather bring 3 more pieces of underwear thant another T-shirt. I always pack one pair more than I need. But hey: if you didn't bring enough: you can always buy some at a clothing store. Sometimes I also bring worn out clothes to chill/sleep in and the throw them away after another good use on the trip. Or if I stay longer I donate some of my old stuff, If I bought new clothes. My challenge is, that I travel by train. Theoretically I can bring a big suitcase, but it's a pain to lugg around and fill up the train. So I do a backpack and a carry-on. I also bring small versions of toiletries or no shower gel when I know a hotel has it. I bring a few bags of my favourite tea and my own snacks. I bring a thermos bottle of tea and one with a cold drink. Sometimes I do a colour scheme and make my bags, eye-shadow and scarf fit it. Check the weather, whether you have the right adapter and take a good powerbank. Leave the laptop at home and take the tablet with a small blutooth keyboard. You might forget something? If all fails you can buy it at the second hand store or at a drugstore/shop. Or if you travel with others you can share some of the toiletries (with your partner) or swap a scarf (with a friend).

Hello, I am a photographer and a cozy minimalist 😊. As souvenirs, I put together a gorgeous photo album at the end if our trip from which each kid gets a copy of in their “memory stash”. When we travel, my 3 boys, husband and i we also always take carry ons no matter the time span. Every larger city here in Europe has those higher end very clean wash facilities (which is not everyones cup of tea I realize) but it works for us and we’ve been doing it for a decade at least with no issues ever.

Quick packing tip: save dirty laundry you already wore the previous week, just wash everything and you will have all the clothing you will need for the week of traveling. If longer than a week save two weeks worth of dirty clothing and then just wash everything right before your trip and pack it with you. Throw in extra shoes and accessories/ jackets and you’re set.

If you’re carryon only why are you checking in at the airport? Check in 24 hrs early and download your ticket on the phone. You won’t get your bag weighed when you go straight to security. Even when you may have to check in at the counter for some international flights especially when we had to show proof of vaccine or test I still didn’t get my bag weighed.

Dr. Bronners is the best!~ Look for the bar soap, no liquids . Lush makes a great bar shampoo, great for sensitive skin ( along with Bronners) again no liquids and they last a long time. I use these on a daily basis and when the bars get thin I set them aside today out and take a smaller version of each on vacation.This gives you room for other liquids and easy transport.

What a great list! so helpful..makes me feel pretty good about our recent trip and how I only actually brought one pair of shoes LOL ended up buying a pair of flip-flops once we got there. I think it depends on the person though regarding souvenirs, some people like small things to remember like you said ie. seashells. I tend to like to bring small items from places to remember fun experiences .love the consumables as an idea !

Please check what food you can take into countries, a lot of countries have a no meat products in luggage. Plus 5 underwear saves on space and you wash them twice. Spent 59 days traveling over summer in the UK with the 1 skirt, 1 3/4 pants(these were the item to be dumped), 1 pants, 7 tops, 1 nightie, 2 cardigans, 5 underwear, 2 bras, 4 pairs socks, sandshoes, sandels and other pair of shoes plus hat, shower proof vest and raincoat. Brought a extra nightie, jeans, and dress, which I needed to buy, didn't need 2 pairs of socks, raincoat (used umbrella and/or vest) or the second cardigan. Could have reduced the shoes, but mine were all suitable for big days of walking. Did have most of this in a small suitcase, because I had 2 kilos of research notes, should have been on a computer, but carryon backpack had 2 days worth of clothing, face stuff etc. Hand washed everything in the sink, wore the base clothes for up to 14 days before hand washing. Hotel chain had a shampoo/body wash, used that to wash clothes, in the hand basin, two nights before changing hotels, so only had under wear dirty in wash bag. Stayed 5 to 7 nights at each hotel. Sometimes wore a top for 5 days or only 2 if food incident. Pack and weigh before leaving, most Southern Hemisphere countries have a 7 kilo limit for carryon, which is why the vest was so important as the pockets could hold 2 kilos of electronics, passport, wallets etc.

Last time I went on vacation - it was actually in Berlin where you live - I had packed soo much, I had to go to the post office, to have some of my items shipped back to Dänemark again, so there were room for my new purchases. Lol! But.... to my defence I was travelling with only one (large) suitcase AND a medical challenged child, so I guess I have a legit excuse for travelling heavy. But I'll try to take your advise in this video and implate what I can use for our next vacation. Also, my son is now able to carry his own luggage. So if you see a boy with curly hair and cochlear implants with a slightly distressed mother roaming the streets of Berlin, that might be us... ;-)
