Don’t let age stop you. I am 79 I have a lot of pain most of the time. But I sat in my sewing chair and completely organized three drawers next to my sewing machine and took some good stuff to a local thrift store for someone who needs a bargain. My memory is not good never has been. The more I take out of that room that I don’t use the less time I spend looking for things. I like that.

I have a shoe box of cards I have had for forty years. It’s small but holds a ton of memories. Cards are an easy way to keep memories alive in a 12x7 box that will last a lifetime but doesn’t take up much space 📦 plus when I am going through a hard time the cards remind me of the people who love and care about me ❤

@@sunshine3914 what a great gift your father gave you love ❤️ I feel that cards and letters don’t take up much room but they are able to bring such great memories back from the past. I found my original naturalization book I received when I became an American citizen at age nine and my adopted mother wrote such a sweet message to me congratulating me on becoming an American citizen and that she loved me. This was written in 1968 when I was 8 years old. Brought tears to my eyes that my American family worked so hard to give me the opportunity to live the American 🇺🇸 dream 🙏

I've found Dana K White's "No mess de-cluttering/Take it there now" method to be SO much more helpful than having a box of stuff to relocate back to where they should go. Boxes of stuff "to be put away" tend to become their own clutter for me.

Every time I feel my stress increase I just repeat to myself I'm making it better! It not perfect, but it is better. I take pictures and write down what I've donated/trashed. I've let go of hundreds of things this past year. I've got lots more to do but it is so much better.

After a while, decluttering becomes a habit. When I first started I used a checklist to give myself a focus for the day. I decluttered for 5 to 15 minutes, once or twice a week. A year later it was already a natural thing for me to do every so often. There's so much less to declutter now, after several years, that it takes mere minutes to do. The big bonus was when my husband spontaneously began decluttering his own possessions. He's a pro now! Our apartment is easy to keep clean now. If you just begin, and keep doing it, a bit at a time, you will become a different, naturally neater and more peaceful person.

When my parents passed away ( leaving me 2 housefuls of their belongings) my adult daughters were a God-send: they came and helped, gently encourage me on donating some of my things to make room for the precious keepsakes of my parent’s, that I truly wanted to keep. Thank you for all this information, from yourself and from others on KZbin. I am slowly de-cluttering, on my own with my dog at 66 years young, and I find it very hard. But once it is out of my house, I do get a great sense of achievement and relief! I do have to pay someone to take my stuff away, as I have no car now, and only go out of my home to walk my dog, and I live in a very rural place. I have two rooms full of stuff to de-clutter, so it will take me a while, but I am getting there, slowly but surely. xxx

Dear Lady, I subscribed to your channel. Gotta quote one statement and give a bit of an echo. You said, "My life isn't Perfect and neither is anyone else's in this video." Wait a minute, that implies that somebody, somewhere has a perfect life. But I don't think so. The X President of the U.S. just got indicted to show up in court, in N.Y. next week. Nobodies life is perfect! Even the people some may have thought was kind of ideal, celebrities lives are so not anywhere near perfect. Adding to Melissa Maker's point about all the linens and cleaning supplies that can be donated to animal shelters, I used to take things to work that I didn't want or like, within reason. Little condiment packets and plastic cutlery are some examples of items you can't donate to secondhand stores but go over very well in the lunchroom. Dry food goods that you've opened and can't donate to a food bank (like spices, tea, granola bars, etc.) are usually grabbed up by co-workers. I've even taken in soaps and lotions that were too heavily scented or just weren't for me.

If you do your grocery shopping at a store that offers multi departments. Like TARGET, WALMART etc. Stay out of departments your tempted by. Clothes when you have enough. Hobbies, crafting can be expensive and requires storage space. Really, how many crafting projects are at home we never finished. Enough said.. You get my drift. If your standing eyeing a non essential ? Ask "do I want it or do I need it. Most times it'll fall into the "want" catagory. Wanting and NEEDING are two vastly different things. Just these few things I'v suggested here have saved me alot of money AND storage space. ...🤷..Good Luck everyone...🏡

Great choices of advice! I realized I had too big a container for some items because I was keeping too many of some categories. I was able to figure out a reasonable amount of each to keep, and was able to consolidate two drawers into one with room to spare. I see other declutterers who succeed in getting rid of huge volumes of clothes, but they don't stop to think what a reasonable number of things. to keep might be, and still end up with a pile of 200 shirts and 50 pants they have to put away-still way too daunting, confusing, and unnecessary an amount even if you do have places to stash it all. I picked 10 days as my number of clothes to keep plus a few extra things for dress and seasons. That lets me take a trip without having to do laundry which is my preference, and enough variety for home situations. But it avoids the crammed closets, drawers, and bins where things get dusty, elastic gets old, and things get forgotten.

Love Ronald Banks’ decluttering vs organizing. Haven’t seen him before but I learned from my own experience the difference. After the death of my parents 2 1/2 years apart and having less time at home because of taking care of mom in another city for awhile on top of homeschooling 2 kids, my house was a mess! Oh yeah! Between 2019 and 2021 we had a few home renovations done and things had to be moved around to accommodate contractors, etc. So I had a mess! In my process of trying to get “organized” (and I had things I had brought into my house from my parents’) I kept buying large storage cabinets! I wanted everything out of sight. I wanted my neat clean house back! Then after awhile, I realized that i felt the storage units were closing in on me! At that point I realized that I need less stuff; not more organizing. I also noticed that I had a stockpile still of certain things that had been hard to get ahold of in 2020 and that I need to use them up or donate them! (When the lockdowns first happened I had been out of groceries and necessities. I had spent the previous 2 weeks testing recipes for my daughter’s 7th birthday part which was to be in her words: A proper princess tea party with little muffins and butter and chicken salad sandwiches and mini cheesecakes. All homemade. Then my neighbors lost a parent and I used what was left in my pantry to fix a large meal to take to them! So I found myself out of literally EVERYTHING!). I had no idea things I took for granted would be scarce and that I wouldn’t be able to just run to the store and get what I needed after the party! Her birthday is March 8th, right prior to the pandemic! Anyway, I started cleaning out and getting rid of stuff. Reorganized my homeschool things. Sold 4 6 or 7 ft tall storage cabinets. It felt amazing! Then I found Dawn! She has helped me learn to let go of certain things I was holding onto for the wrong reasons. So thanks! I personally “get” the organizing vs decluttering difference!

Awesome decluttering video! I just added some amazing decluttering nuggets to my arsenal. I came from a home of a pack rat (Dad) and a hoarder (Mom). Now that I have my own home and a couple of kids, I am feeling it. I have been slowly working my way through stuff, but have been seriously overwhelmed. I had no idea that Best Buy had a recycling program for electronics. I have a printer that is in good shape, barely used but did not know what to do with it. No one wants it. Off to Best Buy it goes this weekend. I am also trying to help my Mom with her stuff and I know she has some electronics that can go. :) I can't wait to put these fabulous tips and ideas to work!

And extra advice when decluttering. If you have guilt throwing a semi sentimental item away take a photo of the item and save picture of items in a separate folder on your Phone or pc. That way you can go back and look at the item and maybe better remember it but it doesn't take space in your house. At least for me it has hslped me to part with a lot of things just knowing I have a picture If I need to see the item again at some point. I haven't needed to look yet but I feel secure and relaxed knowing I have the pictures just in case
