@duffman184 ай бұрын
It reminds me of Super Meat Boy, or Celeste, in a way. Because you have to string a lot of different moves perfectly in a row to beat the level and you constantly die and restart until you work out absolutely everything you have to do in the level/screen and keep re-trying until you finally nail it perfectly. And because the difficulty, while absolutely immense, always feels completely fair. Every single time you die/fail in these games, it always feels like your fault, and so instead of getting frustrated, you end up re-trying and re-trying for hours over and over because you feel like if you just concentrate a LITTLE bit harder then you'll finally beat it. It's hard in an extremely addictive kind of way. I love these kind of games. Where it's extremely hard, but completely fair. So it's immensely satisfying once you finally beat a level. Stuntman is one of the most satisfying and rewarding games I have ever played, it feels _INCREDIBLE_ once you finally beat a mission after hours of trying. You don't feel frustrated and angry at any point, you never feel like smashing your controller. Because it makes you always feel like you're right on the cusp of beating the level, even when you're not, even when you actually need quite a lot more re-tries until you nail it. Somehow it just always feels like success is just within your grasp. Just like in Celeste or Super Meat Boy and games like that. I really really wish they'd port Stuntman to modern consoles. No need for a remake or a remaster or anything like that. Just port the original game. Because I'd absolutely love to play it again. And watching this video it's clear that it still holds up. My old PS2 doesn't work anymore so I have no way to play it unless they finally do port it. There's rumours of an official Sony PS2 emulator coming to PS5, just like there's an official Sony PS1 emulator on it already that means basically zero work has to be done on a game to port it to the PS5, you just have the game's ROM and the emulator plays it. I own a lot of the PS1 games on PS5. Like all the twisted metals, and the syphon filters. So if a ps2 emulator is made available then we'd definitely start seeing games like Stuntman become available without needing loads of work done to make it run on the PS5. It'd just work automatically, using the emulator. Funny that what was regarded back then as a tech demo for Driver 3 ended up being a lot better than Driver 3. I really hope I get to play it again one day.

@ravageduckmanguy3 жыл бұрын
THis video definitely nails it IMO. The first game takes a really neat, specific creative vision and fully commits to it, but suffers from a fatal flaw (load times), while the sequal just kinda took the rough idea of the first game and went off and did its own thing. One thing you didn't mention is that the replay cinematography in Ignition is pretty crap compared to how polished it was in the first game. The first game the replays all felt like movie scenes even outside the context of the trailers, but Ignition used a lot of generic race raplay cameras that didn't even properly show what was going on around you. They're both still fun games in their own right though, as you said.
@ShogunGin03 жыл бұрын
Personally, for old PS2 games with long load times, I recommend installing the freemcboot hack onto a memory card and loading the game onto an old IDE hard drive in the fat PS2's chamber that needs a network adapter to work. You can run the game on original hardware, and it tends to load games a lot quicker. It also saves wear and tear on the laser for those rare games that currently aren't compatible with software launchers like OPL. It can take a bit of doing to get fully set up, but once you do, it's great. You can play games from different regions with it, and it can play the few language hacked games out there on real hardware.

But it made it all the more worth it when you had that perfect run.. what made the difficulty so bad though we're the load times. That's the one bad memory of this game from playing it with my family all those years ago lol, half the time was spent staring at load screens because of a single tiny fuck up hahaha) anyway yeah man, I'm, excited as to see you cover it

My uncle worked at Paradigm. He was the Senior Visual Artist on Stuntman Ignition and worked on the pretty cool old game Mission Impossible: Operation Surma. One time I visited him in Dallas when I was 10 and he took me to the studio and let me play Stuntman Ignition in the testing room with the beta tester guys before it was announced or there were any ads on TV or anything. Going home and telling my friends about the awesome game my uncle was making and I got to play before anyone else outside the company, and then them seeing commercials for it a couple of months later just like I said was one of the coolest memories of my childhood. Unfortunately this was the last game the company made before it was shut down do to the financial / corporate restructuring issues aforementioned in the video.

I played the original one with my dad all the time as a kid, and when I got an Xbox 360 one of the first games I got for it was ignition. We both played like 3 levels and were just sort of underwhelmed. It felt like a watered down version of the original game. I actually just bought a ps2 and a few classic games for my dad for Christmas last year and we spent like 2 days getting through Stuntman again. Even with how old it was, the driving and challenge feel just as good as they did when I was a kid, and sitting next to my dad at 22 years old and still playing Stuntman was something I will always cherish. The original Stuntman is pretty much timeless, I will probably be playing it for the rest of my life when I get that particular itch that only Stuntman can scratch haha!

thank you for posting this. From my perspective the jarring difference is the physics and vehicle weight in Stuntman Ignition seemed nonexistent, when compared to the original. Take care.
@themightymander_extra3 жыл бұрын
The original Stuntman is a classic. The second is also pretty fun, but that first game is absolutely iconic
@negil3 жыл бұрын
I think the main reason these games feel timeless is because they stand alone. I kind of feel the same way about Test Drive: Eve of Destruction (which has very similar disc art to Ignition, with both being a wheel), which I love and constantly replay and feels "timeless" since there's never been another racing game that so perfectly captures the feel of small town racing (complete with permanent car damage), so the flaws of it's time are more forgivable. I'm sure if a new game that perfectly captured the feel of the original Stuntman, but had instant restarts and a perfect framerate, existed, the original wouldn't feel as timeless.

Really great retrospective. I bought the first game after watching this and I'm absolutely loving it. If more people had seen a review like this back in the day I think the game would have been appreciated much more. I know I am late but just wanted everyone to know that you can disable the green arrows and overly arcady HUD in Stuntman 2. You will still get the yellow stunt markings, so the game is still perfectly playable without the HUD. It definitely is harder without it and you have to carefully listen to the director‘s comments to know in which direction you have to drive next but it feels way more in line with the first game (minus the superior driving physics of S1). I won’t recommend it if you want a 5-star rating but for a first playthrough and more immersion, disabling the HUD is great in my opinion :)

Thank you for reviewing the weirdo nostalgic games of a youth that based their game choices on how much badass imagery was on the back of the case and how many cheat codes there were listed for it in a cheat code manual. Can't wait for the long awaited Fighter Maker 2 review in 8 months.

I loved the premise of the Stuntman games, it's where you do stunts for action movies. And that's a pretty cool concept in itself.

This game was my personal favourite on the PS2 and i don't fully realized it untill i bought a PS3 but kept using the PS2 just to play this one. Plus, from personal experience, this is definetly one of the most well aged PS2 games as you said in the video. A lot of times, when i go back to play an old game i haven't played for a long time, it's not as good as i remember but this one, this one always is.

DUDE THESE GAMES WERE MY CHILDHOOD. I had a demo of stuntman for so long that game became my holy grail. I found it cheap at a carboot sale later and played the hell out of it. It was the first frustrating game that I didn't completely give up on straight off the bat

Just bought a ps2 and stuntman and have been reliving my childhood. It’s just as great as I remember! So much fun taking turns after every fail with my cousins

I would love a remake with mod support and steam workshop being able to play other peoples levels mimicking popular movies.
