I figure the bikers have antennas because they’d range ahead of the main force and need to keep in long range contact. Perhaps the helmet ones are so that when the rider dismounts to scout ahead, they can reach the more powerful vox caster in the bike, which relays the message through it’s flag antenna back to the commander in his rhino or perhaps even in orbit.

I suspect old school GW, circa 2nd edition, kind of expected many players to use roughly half the rules in the books, if that. What with the game being pushed toward a more child-friendly market and all.

Due to its deeper origins in wargames, very old D&D editions had specific rules for how to jump off a horse or vehicle and tackle someone else off of their own. I love stuff like this

I played Dark Angels but the vibrancy of those Imperial Fist bikes in the 3rd ed book caught my eye too. Even when I think of Marines I see saturated blues and reds and those yellow, yellow bikes. Excellent work

I had a friend who had a bike. In fact he had a lot of cool oldies - I was always envious because he bought so much, and my parents wouldn't let me buy as much...

I gotta admit I always hated the Space Marine Bikes. Despite all the demons, psychers and warp shenanigans, one thing even my 10 year old self was not buying was bikes with no ground clearance at all being viable in battle. You couldn't even tilt them sideways for 5° to make a turn without the foot stand hitting the ground.

to rep a dismounted bike you could use a token system. Have a 1 to 1 sized, top down view of the empty bike and its base, flat token to leave where the empty bike stands. Without a full empty bike mini, thats as good a way as any.

Heh. I remember these guys. I had a 3-man squad of them in my first Space Marines army, as they were included in the old Space Marines Battleforce box from 3rd/4th edition. The only difference between these old ones, and the ones that have recently been discontinued, sorry "Range Rotation'ed", is that the Space Marine himself was changed so his legs had a ball joint, and the torso and backpack being akin to the Tactical Squad's torsos.

Of course, the unspoken best thing about the bikey boys is using those legs to give your infantry John Wayne stances. Never did bikes m'self, I seem to recall thinking they were silly. Now, it's the silliness that appeals. Many of the OG Hammered Lads were bikers themselves, and, bein' as I was in attendy for several late eighties early nineties Games Days, one of the things I have never heard mention is that the Old Guard's bikes would always be parked up near the entrance, and I'm pretty sure each of them was somewhere in the process of hand painting their rides, so, I mean, you can imagine what John Blanche's custom black shadow was like. No surprise they couldn't stop 'emselves adding bikes into the games whenever they could. I'm fairly sure this is a part of why the Squats were unexistinated when the hand-over occurred because they really were the Grand Ancient Chaps of the Workshop personified. Anyway. Oh, yes, and of course the 2.0 bikes were, really, Lawmasters. I don't believe tyres like that would be good for steering. Plus, you know, when you remember the scale set for 40k (1m: 1cm) and run the numbers around to get something, those bikes were not moving quickly, really, None of the vehicles had their speeds set at something realistic, obviously for gaming porpoises, it's just, when you think a motorbicycle is only a bit quicker than your walking speed it gets a tad bizarre. That does, though, bring up the question of whether or not it'd make sense to put Sproons on Segways. "Advance, Brothers! Trust thy gyros!" "And the Emperor!" "Yes, yes, thank you Brother Gavin, Trust your gyros and thy Emperor!" "Sarge, me battlewheeler's got no charge..." "I told thee to imbue thy wheeled steed last night!" "Aye, Sarge, but, there were no sockets left because all the boys were charging theirs and Brother Leonard 'ad 'is ipod plugged into the one in't corridor, and, well, I thought it had most of a charge anyhoo, so, I thought I could finish it off, like, in the bus on't way down, but they said the radars, like, needed it for the beepy boopy thing, Sarge." "I never liked you, you know..." But, you know, anyhoo. Nicey bikies!

Gorgeous job on those bikes. I remember using that metal biker torso for my assault marine sergeant back in the day. I also remember characters on bikes being death traps since I think they were like armor 10 on all sides and half the results killed the rider with no saves of any kind :D

2nd edition was my personal favourite as the Orks still had the grin in their faces. That all changed when Chambers took over and erased the grin for pure grim. That took all the fun out - and my interest in the game as a whole.

You got a really nice yellow on them, classic Imperial Fists looks. They may be very old sculpts but I've always found a lot to appreciate in them, yours really show them off. I had the same boxed set, captain and two special weapons - still do luckily - but the star of the show in many battles for me was the flamer biker I made with an arm and weapon from the 3rd edition tacticals. I used to play in 500pt skirmishes a lot so every point mattered, and nothing paid for itself more than that flamer, using the bike's speed to get alongside a lined-up unit then place the flame template over seven or eight minis. That plus the bolters of the other two bikes in my little squadron used to routinely reduce even formidable squads to a negligible threat in a single round of shooting.

However I disapprove of the Special Weapons, they are just weird for a bike rider in my opinion. Your Bike Squad looks lovely, but I must quote another KZbinr, always drill your barrels.
