Update! All news seals helped a ton. It still is getting a very small amount of water in it after a full day of use. Nothing like before. Got a few things to try, will report back in a future video when I have it 100% solved.

Ok, so due to the corrosion damage to the powdercoat at the sealing surface, even the new seals didn't seal it. It helped a lot, but I would still have 1/2 cup of water in it at the end of the day. I took it apart one day to let it dry for a week, then put RTV silicone on the mating surfaces of the front and rear caps. Assembled it, let it cure 24 hours, have used it 3 times with zero water sloshing around inside. I also put RTV around where the shaft attaches to the lower unit. Not pretty, but for a $400 terrova, I'll call that a win.

I had the same problem. Rebuilt it myself, still leaked, had a “Minn Kota Service Dealer” rebuild it and it still leaked. I siliconed the piss out of it and we’ll see if the problem is fixed!

You guys need to use aviation or boat sealant NOT silicone! Use on the mating surfaces and coating o-ring lightly, it stays flexible and never hardens and can actually reseal with expansion and contraction...silicone will fail in most boat situations with submersion. Same sealant is used in lower units exactly because silicones are not designed for underwater usage in any thickness.

Thank you for the video! I cut down my Ultara 60" to a 45" and now I will be purchasing a boat that will require the 60" :( I can buy a new shaft and armature housing for $150, and by watching your video I'm now confident I can replace it!

I love that you left the parts where you did it wrong. I do the same. Day1: “it’s simple, nothing to it” day 4: “okay things didn’t go as planned” lol

would you happen to have any pictures of the armature shaft - prop side of the "c-lamp" and washers arrangement that butts up to the Brass bearing insert in the front assembly. Mine had the shaft and armature could move in / out and in that area there were some worn parts and all the parts diagrams Minn Kota has are not very details and the parts don't seem to remove the "play" The backend that goes into the nose cone all look to be correct.

Hey Fiddes trying to rebuild a minn Kota riptide 74# thrust, where did you order your seal kit from?

My brushes are grinding on armature. New brush assembly. Do I need to power the motor for the brushes to retract a little?
@StephenF.4 жыл бұрын
The brushes are supposed to contact. They shouldn't be grinding and causing excessive drag tho. Make sure everything is clean in there.

I followed your directions for the armature and many of the other parts. I've ordered the parts I need and they are on their way. In the mean time, I used a wire wheel also to remove the existing rust. What I found was a lot of the stuff coming off with the wire wheel tended to adhere to the magnets. I'm having trouble removing all the stuff from the magnets before I just paint over it. I did use some duct tape in a dental floss fashion and was able to get a lot of it out and I also plan to put a towel through it to remove what appears to be carbon from the previously burned parts. My question is, instead of painting it, would a coat of WD-40 do as well as paint to coat the inside to protect from future rust?
@StephenF.5 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert in motors... But be careful using power tools on the armature like a wire wheel. The coatings on the coils are very very important. if the coating comes off, the whole armature is toast. The lower unit housing you can use wire wheels on. Paint to prevent more corrosion. As far as getting the rust off the magnets, air compressor and a blower is the answer. Wear eye-pro and don't breath the dust. Cleaning the outer magnets is a good idea while you're in there, hitting that with carb cleaner can't hurt. I did mine. Don't get carb cleaner on the coil coatings.

@@StephenF. Got it, Thank you. I got all the parts in today except the Armature. I was talking about the wire brush on the magnets though, not the armature, it will be brand new. Carb cleaner is a great idea, thank you.

@@arklaser Man, armature is not a cheap unit either. Yours must have been pretty bad.

Can you tell what thrust your motor is by the parts Inside of the lower unit??
@StephenF.4 жыл бұрын
You can try by googling the part numbers on the armature... Not sure if that will work or not tho.

FiddesModsTV looks like there different if you buy one I got a terrova the guy said it was a 80 pound but I found the serial number it says 101 I’m not sure what to run it on lol
@StephenF.4 жыл бұрын
@@andrewmonks3007 There should be a model number on the head, or somewhere else. Maybe try calling MinnKota and asking about it.

You can order straight from Minn Kota site. Has a very user friendly platform for ordering as it shows a diagram and you hover over the parts you need and add to cart.

Ish? After a full day, it had only a tiny bit of water in it. maybe 1/8 cup (kitchen cup your wife/girlfriend uses to make delicious food with) vs being COMPLETELY full before. I think it might be leaking right around where the arm goes into the lower unit. I'm going to slap some RTV on that to see if that fixes it for good. If not, there might be a crack in the arm, which case I'm not sure how I'll fix that. I'm not paying for a new arm.
@StephenF.5 жыл бұрын
Update, as I commented above too, but I ended up siliconeing around all seals except the propshaft seal. That did fix the leaking. I think the corroded paint that flaked off was the problem even with the new seals. Problem no more!
