While I am unable to be there to repour the bearings on the Minneapolis, we did find it to be a 1/8 inch out of square. This was causing the angular travel of the connecting rod and the binding we saw.
If you have any information of what actually happened to this engine while at Rollag, please let me know.

Lighting to me is important and your new lighting is an improvement. The best thing I ever did in my shop is changing from fluorescent lighting to LED. I put in the same number of LED's as I had fluorescent and now its so bright that I have to turn off half the lights. Only using the brightest over the machine I am working on at the time. I enjoy watching your videos .

I remember over 50 years ago in the secondary school metal shop making a four way pulley. Initial setup was with the cast aluminium blank in a four jaw chuck to face the large end and bore the hole through it. Then we had to make a tapered shaft to put the pulley blank on to machine for the belt. Turning the shaft involved offsetting the tailstock slightly to produce a very slight taper in order to have the pulley blank near the center of the shaft. The instructor came around from time to time and I had almost finished a pass. When I checked the pulley, it was too close to the tailstock, so I took another one thou cut as the instructor came back and was worried that I was taking too much off, but it ended up that the pulley was pretty close to center. That was an old Hercus metal lathe, which had none of the sophistication of newer (and older) lathes.

Someone sure made a mess with that Minneapolis crankshaft. It sure does sound like a cover-up for someone's original mistake, whatever that was, to cause the original damage. Hopefully you get it all sorted out correctly this time.

Hi Josh: You can never have enough light when working with machines, as you do. I hope that they are LED type. You can add much light and the cost will be lower only the initial cost of the fixtures. I think you will actually see your electric bill go down. That is a very good thing. Making tapers is not easy. Your experience shows. You make it look easy. One more comment: They kept breaking these, I gather, because the material was too soft. You changing to a stronger material is a very good idea. You sort of work yourself out of a job by picking the correct material for the job. I have to agree 100% with your way of doing business. I bet you will be getting more work from these videos. O know that if - " I were looking for the job to be done right, at a fair price, the first time", I would send it to you. I have to believe business is picking us. Keep up the excelent work. Regards: JP

These new LEDs are replacing older one. Much more wattage and lumens. No way my power bill is going down with these. But worth the expense to see better. I tend to help my customers upgrade and save money. Yeah it costs me some money long term, but I have happy repeat customers. Work isn't picking up, but it's not bad enough to need a second job, yet. It is slowing down though.

You mentioned going blind with the new lighting ..... It will in fact be the opposite with having better lighting being better for your eyes with no eye strain. The new lighting is definitely much better, we can see the difference. It's always good having good light with whatever you are doing. I set my small 100 square feet shop up with seven lights, so that I have a light on each bench or machine and one brighter in the middle of the room. My wood shop is a little smaller and has six lights. I'm using LED bulb lights, not strip lights.

Josh, i just installed some LED panels in a simular shop. I would recommend LED panels, because you get more light, you don't brighten up the ceiling, the hole light comes down to where you need it. The light distribution is far better and and you get less shading. You get different sizes, i used 120x30cm (about 3ft by 1ft) with 40W. Colour should be 4000K and for filming i recommend a good CRI of more than 80, 90+ is ideal. Greets from Liechtenstein

In terms of pouring new white metal (babbit) bearings. I don't want to teach you to suck eggs, but these were the options we had when pouring the same things for our steam engine crank. The choice is about whether to use the actual shaft as the former, and then scrape back to size and clearance, or use a dummy oversize shaft with the clearance already on it. First option probably allows you to align the actual shaft and conrods etc more easily, but is a bit laborious and flaky as far as accuracy of size is concerned. 2nd option is the right one, and how they usually did it during build, but you then need to jig it all up to get alignment right. You could pour and then line bore, but you're back to the alignment issues and it was partially the avoidance of line boring why some engines went to white metal instead of bronze in the first place. And of course, put a bit of smoky soot off an acetylene torch on the shaft so the white metal doesn't stick.

Added lights are excellent. Might consider adding a work light to the carriage or near the headstock for added lighting. Possible reasons why the trailer spindle is failing, if there is a sharp transition at the shoulder where the bearing sits, that sharp transition becomes a stress riser that grows into a crack then propagates until the part fails. This is a cyclic failure or repeated loading/unloading over many, many, many cycles before the part fails. Cure for this is to put a large a radius as the bearing (bearing IDs have a radius to accommodate the shoulder radius) will tolerate at that shoulder transition and make sure the radius transitions are smooth. 1144 "stress proof" steel is a good material choice for this spindle.

A cheat for axle issues like that is to use a bigger radius at the shoulder. Then you can use a washer with a bigger id to clear the shoulder but the proper width so the bearing doesn't hang up on the radius. I fixed a big grain cart that way years ago that use to break spindles every year it probably has been 20 years since no issues.
