Hard hitting action that has a playoff intensity to it. OC Mark Trestman is under a lot of pressure for his conservative play calling in Cleveland.

The freakiest thing about that stat they showed late in OT about Minnesota being 0-7 in Week 15 since 1981 was that their last week 15 win was against the Browns in 1980 on the infamous Hail Mary from Kramer to Rashad. Back then these teams would have only played once every 3 years, now its every 4 years.

The Vikings lost a considerable, dominating home-field advantage when in 1982 they became a domed, climate controlled team that no longer had this intense, brutal, Antartica-esque like wind chills and blinding snow storms as their allies to compliment those great SB contending teams of the late 60's and 1970's. I fully understand and if it were old enough back then probably would have supported moving into the Metrodome, from a logistical standpoint. Twin Cities have certainly benefited as being the host of two SB's and numerous NCAAB Final Four and regional tournaments, but if the Vikes play some of those huge playoff games outdoors in mid-late January with below zero temps and -30 or -40 wind chills, more then likely they don't lose those games. Compare their postseason win-loss record at home at old Met to Metrodome, since the Vikes played at Metrodome, they might have more postseason wins there, but there playoff winning percentage isn't nearly as good or as dominant. And I still don't think it's a coincidence Minnesota hasn't played in a Super Bowl since 1976 despite having countless good or great teams loaded with talent, good HC's, great seasons due to them playing indoors in January, no one has sufficiently disproven that posing at least a secondary factor.

Minnesota’s kick blocking abilities were legendary under Bud Grant and his disciple Jerry Burns. Faking the field goal at the end was a pretty clever move. If it doesn’t work, throw it away and kick it for real on 4th down. I also love how clever the NFL Today graphic was at the very beginning, all synced up to the music and even noticing that the inside of the CBS eye is the same shape as a football.

@wyattmailloux94194 жыл бұрын
@@rustykuntz94 Brent Musburger wasn't officially tossed until April 1st of 1990. (Still 3 1/2 months away from the airdate of this game which was 12/17/1989) CBS underwent a management change earlier in the 1989 year. They felt that Brent Musburger was getting too many plum assignments and that some of the younger guys like Nantz and Gumbel should get some of them as well. so for the 1989 season Nantz was given lead pbp for college football (Musburger fell to #2) and the Masters. Musburger still got the NFL Today and college basketball lead and was slated to be the lead for MLB that started mid-April 1990 but something went down during that Final Four weekend at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver CO. That CBS decided to dump Musburger altogether so April 2nd 1990 NCAA Championship game between Duke and UNLV was his last assignment for CBS. Jack Buck took over as lead for MLB, Nantz got his college basketball lead and Gumbel took over for NFL Today. ABC hired Musburger 32 days later and that started a 27 year run there where did a variety of things most notably college football. (Michaels had issues at ABC at the time but they kept Michaels and Musburger separated) In conclusion, some networks believe that they should spread the wealth (ESPN being the most notable) others believe in a "face" and CBS is one of those networks, Nantz is the current face of CBS like Musburger was before him.

One of the all time stupid things done was demonstrated in this game. After trading the farm, the ranch, the mansion, the house, and the deed to someone else’s property to Dallas for Herschel Walker, they then *misused* him by trying to make an outside runner. I don’t care what their offense was, you cannot pay that kind of price for them and then expect that player to “magically” do what he didn’t do best.
@garydarland5259 Жыл бұрын
The worst trade in history. The Vikings didn't need him for "what he was good at". The Cowboys used him in several different ways (out wide, at flanker and even at fullback) and he played well. Once he got to Minnesota he was only good as the halfback from the "I", and even then he wasn't THAT good. Mike Lynn should have been shot, that trade hapoened right before he went to the USFL job... Cleveland Browns both had Brian Sipe & Bernie Kozar for quarterbacks but never had a defense to help them out.

It’s interesting how they celebrated plays back then. I’m not saying good or bad, just different. It’s interesting to me. They celebrated more with their team than with the camera.

@@richiebee1984 The Giants defeated the Cowboys 15-0 that Saturday and the Rams blew out the Jets 38-14 the next day. The Giants won the NFC East that year with a 12-4 record. They would lose in overtime to the Rams in the Divisional Round 19-13 on Flipper Anderson's touchdown catch. The Jets however, finished 4-12 and head coach Joe Walton was axed after the season and replaced with Bruce Coslet.
