I love how Celia offers bus money. It shows how even though she was rejected, she still offered to help them get home for coming all the way to her house. Any other white characters, such as Elizabeth and especially Hilly, would have kicked them out in the mud and treat them like garbage. It just shows how kindhearted Celia’s character is.

I read the book and Celia came from Sugar Ditch, a very poor neighbourhood close to Jackson, so she really learnt to stand by herself since young age. In the film we can see that when she immediately notices that Minny's injury is not due to a fall in a bathtub. In the book she actually physically defends Minny against a white drunk man who had come to the house, probably to steal something. In the book Minny often underlines how strong this fragile woman is.

I think that it was originally written that Celia grew up in a really poor neighborhood but it was never mentioned in the movie. Which makes sense because she's very down to earth and treats Minnie like an equal rather than a subordinate. She also says "I've never had a maid before!"

The movie makes a good presentation of showing how racists bully the others who want to change the dynamic. The main issue is the way these bullies also use their platform to enact laws that codify racism. The one maid who couldn’t send both kids to college even though they got in made it so clear that “pulling up by bootstraps” is such nonsense. It is so difficult to get oneself out of poverty unless someone is helping you. I also dislike that this movie was tarnished by calling it “white savior” story. Who ever says that didn’t understand the movie at all.

Even the subtle body language with direct eye contact. Celia embracing Minnie by grabbing her arm in excitement... with no negativity or violence. I love those details you see by watching a scene over and over again. In comparison to the other Households, Celia stands out as a very loving, protective, caring, beaming and fun personality. Minnie later sees Celia's deepest traumas of her past. All the babies she has lost and the struggles she has faced. Celia notices injuries Minnie has. They have a bond. They respect each other and keep each other safe. I love their connection. Also, the husband being a decent person. Respecting and thanking Minnie for taking care of his Wife and himself is a lovely uplifting ending.

One thing I loved about this movie is how it showed that this situation is very complicated. Not all Southern white people were racist, but there was certainly a lot of racists who didn't (and today don't) believe they're racist. But when you see all the individuals and their relationships, that's when this world really comes to life, good and bad.

@@b2kzangelalwayz Perhaps, but I think most people would agree an ignorant person who is blind to the world’s problems isn’t a bad person… just uninformed. Ignorance is bliss, right? Celia here is a good person, and for people like her, we need to be more often lifting people up for their positive attributes rather than critiquing them for their negative ones. The former encourages people to continue on the path they’re on and learn more, while the latter usually aggravates or offends people. That’s what I’ve found anyway.
