Just a short video showing off the new perch trap offered on Reel Texas Outdoors. This perch trap is our new "Z - Trap" and man it catches the fish! The best part is that this new perch trap really DOES NOT require bait to catch the fish. You'll see this in the video... so be sure to check it out. Also, please be sure to drop me a comment if you have a question about this new perch (z) trap.
This trap is perfect for perch, bream, sunfish, bluegill.

A trap with lose bait will attract the fish to the outside edges without the need to enter to feed. Try a comparison of a Z trap without bait and one with bait but, have the bait centered inside the z trap. I believe this will give a better comparison of bait vs without bait. Just my thought on the comparisons. Great vid!!

Paul Speidell - hi Paul... great question man. I’ve come to this conclusion... trapping fish is still fishing, and therefore very subjective. It definitely depends on weather conditions, time of day (bream don’t hardly go in a trap at night), bait, water temp, fish activity, etc, etc, etc... As for as traps go, I don’t believe that anyone would be disappoint with either the z-trap or the 4 leaf clover. Both are absolutely killer in the water, and both will produce the bait you need. I think each had its advantages as well. The z-trap honestly tends to fill up a bit faster and catch quicker, but it doesn’t hold as many fish as the clover. Plus, it helps whenever you know there are baitfish in the area. The clover is excellent whenever you’re not sure where the baitfish are and need to use some bait to draw them in. I hope that makes sense... been a long night out in the shop building traps. Lol. Basically, they’re both great traps and will catch the fish. However, they could be viewed like fishing rods... no one rod is perfect for all conditions. Each has its strengths. Hope this helps, man.

Hi Terry.. thanks for the comment! You can't go wrong with either trap as both are excellent. However, I would say go with the z-style trap if you are fishing an area where you know there are tons of baitfish. This trap seems to catch pretty quick in these areas. However, if you're having to "fish" the trap and locate bait fish, then I would recommend the clover trap as you will be able to hold the bait in the center of the trap for longer and draw in bait fish. You can also bait the z-trap as well by tying off some bait in a mesh bag, sock, or pantyhose, etc... Again, both traps work great and you can catch plenty of bait with both. Please feel free to shoot me an email at mike@reeltexasoutdoors.com if you have any other questions. Thank you, sir!

@ReelTexasOutdoors
@ReelTexasOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tommy - thanks for the comment. The opening would allow for large crawfish as they are 1 in by 3 inches. However, the orientation for the crawfish to enter is wrong on this trap... this has the entry points vertical instead of horizontal. We do make a "combo" trap on the site that you can easily flip on its side and use for crawfish or baitfish. Now, you can catch some crawfish in the trap in the video...I just would not recommend it solely for crawfish. Hope that helps, man. If you want me to link the combo trap just let me know. @ReelTexasOutdoors
@ReelTexasOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul - thanks for the comment. You may check for your local body of water (some smaller lakes don’t allow trapping), but you generally don’t have to register to use a trap. You simply have to tag it and throw it in the water like you would a trotline. There is some information about trapping on the Texas Parks and wildlife website, but it’s pretty vague and refers to a perch trap and not a bluegill/sunfish trap. I mean, most folks call bluegill and sunfish “perch”, but they are not actually a species of perch. This is what gets confusing when reading the information on the Texas Parks and wildlife site. Anyhow, I’m rambling at this point… But in order to use a trap in most public lakes all you need to do is tag it. Hope this helps, buddy.

Hi Leeroy. Thanks for the question. Unfortunately, I don't know of any trap design that would be excellent for mullet alone. Species of fish like mullet and shad simply don't trap well, and a castnet is about the best way to do it. Hi there... if you're going to trap bream/sunfish, you cannot go wrong with some old dry dog food or balled up white bread. You may even test the trap without bait at all as well. A guy yesterday sent me a photo of a cloverleaf I mailed to him that had 11 bullheads in it. It was hist first attempt at trapping... used no bait... and only let it set two hours. These things will catch some without bait too, but if you do bait... go with the two I mentioned above. You can pour them into an old sock, pantyhose, or a small mesh bag if you're using a Z-trap. Good luck!

@@MrSierraRoad - my apologies - that last reply should have gone to a different comment. Not sure how I mixed it up with your's. As for depth, there's no set standard. It's fishing, so it will depend on the year, your body of water, temperature, and so on.... Since bream typically stay around cover, i would start shallow (1-4 feet) and go from there. You will almost always be able to find them in shallow depth and around cover. If you're having trouble there, then look around docks or isolated structure... but you should not need to go over about 6 ft to find bream/sunfish. Again, start shallow... around 2-4 foot and you should be fine.

It is illegal to trap bluegill or sunfish in public fresh waters in Texas.
@ReelTexasOutdoors
@ReelTexasOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, that's incorrect. Bluegill/sunfish are considered non-game fish here in Texas. They can be trapped and used for bait (on consumption). What a lot of folks get hung up on is the wording in the TXPW regulations. Around here everyone says "perch" in reference to bluegill, sunfish, crappie, etc... where "perch" would be a game fish... sunfish are not. The stipulation is in the size of the trap and that the openings cannot be more than 1 in by 3 inches. I hope this helps some.
@jerrykrobby
@jerrykrobby 5 жыл бұрын
@Reel Texas Outdoors I stand corrected. I've been looking into this issue since I last commented and it is clearly legal to use these traps as you stated for sunfish in Texas. I did call TPWL asking about this rule. I spoke with a young lady in regulations who couldn't answer my question but put me on hold and talked to her boss who is head of Inland Fisheries Regulations (Ken). While talking to her boss she took it upon herself to use the word perch instead of sunfish (she thought they were the same thing) and therefore I got the incorrect information. I called back and finally spoke with Ken today and he clarified this issue for me. I apologize for the mix up! Hopefully this hasn't created any issues for you.
