Minsk was Amazing when I was there in 2018. Gorky Park, the river walk. The Soccer Stadium was gorgeous. The architecture was very strong and with clean lines, and well maintained. The use of color in the city is an artistic paradise. The castles, the cat museum, the underground shops, the huge mall, the food was delicious. The people were genuinely nice. The city was very clean, there wasn't trash laying around. People had a sense of pride about their country. The churches were being restored. People were old fashioned, but had an air of modern touches in the right places. A very romantic feel. God Bless Belarus. 🙏🏻😇🙏🏻

@チムール What in your mind is a completely different culture than that of the Russians? Let's turn to the definition of what national culture is in general. National culture is the norms, behaviors, beliefs, customs, and values shared by the population of a sovereign nation. It refers to specific characteristics such as language, religion, ethnic and racial identity, cultural history and traditions. Russians and Belarusians have one language, the Belarusian language died a long time ago and not a single person uses it as their first language, both have Orthodox religion, celebrate the same holidays, live in the same information field. Hell, the Belarusian and Russian people are so close that they are the only Europeans who prefer the "strong leader" regime. Or are you saying that the Belarusians, who are mostly vatniks, feel closer to the Poles or Ukrainians?) You probably live somewhere in Japan and haven't been to Belarus, if you say that. In general, I was rather criticizing the author of the video for the promotion of a false image of Belarus, rather than discussing the cultures

I am getting old now. I'm in my sixties. I studied Russian and Czech languages at university in the UK in the 70s and I spent time studying in Moscow, Leningrad (as it was then) and Brno in Czechoslovakia (as it was then). I found myself split. In both countries I was in love with the country, the culture, the history and most of all the languages. I made really great friends. I was keen to tell people at home that Russians and Czechs were not all secret agents or mindless Communist propagandists. But I was aware of the reality of living under communism. I knew who I could trust and who to avoid. I knew what to say in public and what to say in private. I knew what I had to pretend to believe. And I could see the corruption, the dishonesty, the hypocrisy and the utter helplessness of ordinary people to do anything about it. What I found complicated was this. Myself I used to like to tell people at home how people on the other side of the Iron Curtain were just like us and a lot of the propaganda was just caricature. But I would also get annoyed by people who visited the east and came back romanticising about the Soviet block, believing the propaganda and describing everything as though it was just fine. I felt it was both naive and also showed a lack of respect to the victims of a brutal regime. And this is how I feel about this film. I fully understand the human contact and the feeling that people in Belarus are just the same as everyone else. I understand that living in a dictatorship doesn't stop you from being an ordinary person. But to make a film like this painting a picture that ignores all the people beaten by police, imprisoned, exiled and even killed shows a lack of respect for the victims of a violent regime. Maybe as a Russian you have just trained yourself to turn a blind eye and say the right thing because that's how to survive. By the way, I have remained a russophile all my life and maintained my links with Russia and have been a regular visitor over the decades. I was never afraid to visit the Soviet Union under Communism and although I sometimes felt a bit nervous, I never felt afraid. I do now. Russian friends the same age as me tell me it is worse now than under Communism because it is violent and aggressive. The one good thing is that ability to travel allowed their children and grandchildren to leave before it became too difficult to travel.

Hello Bob! I’m only 27, so I don’t know if you’re going to take my opinion seriously.. I’m Ukrainian by nationality and was born in Kyiv. And I’ve travelled a while through recent years talking to people from Syria, Lebanon or Yemen. Interestingly, the «democracy» hasn’t done anything good for these people, but the attempt to establish it by overthrowing their governments has left them homeless. On the other hand UAE is not a democratic country, but their development and happiness index are great! Singapore began as a «dictatorship of development» and without authoritarian decisions couldn’t have reached all the results it has now. So I’ve learned one great lesson: don’t disturb the country, leave it develop smoothly and pass to democracy it’s own way. No other countries should try to get into this path and disturb it, or it will be a total mess like in Syria and many other countries that US tries to change unsuccessfully 😢 And we’ll find a way to speak for ourselves, don’t worry!
@Alex-gc4td Жыл бұрын
Dear Bob. As a belarusian who loves his country, I'm fascinated with your understanding of the situation and at the same time terrified by the opinion of the author in the previous message. Many of the people are so used to live under the "protection" that forgot what it is to have own free will without being punished for it (for several generations already). People are so used to it that it seems to me it is some kind of a Stockholm syndrome developed by the idea that "if not this way - it is going to be worse".
@KazimierzMalewicz444 Жыл бұрын
Bob is spot on. The author either doesn't understand things, is deluded, or simply a paid shill. How is democracy at fault for the situations in Syria? It's precisely the authoritarian strongman who doesn't want to lose power, throwing people into the meat grinder without caring a bit. How is democracy at fault when the Houthis try to take over Yemen? What the hell are you talking about? Then you handpick the UAE and Singapore as literal exceptions that prove the rule. This is just a cheap manipulation. >Singapore began as a 'dictatorship of development,' and without authoritarian decisions, it couldn't have achieved the results it has now. Yeah, "trust me bro." Many countries didn't go that route but still achieved success. Democracy isn't perfect, but it's the best we've got. If you prefer being thrown into prison for the color scheme of your socks, just say it. Don't make up things that are not true.

@@ohthatscurious9458 You say 'leave countries to pass to democracy in their own way..' but how long does that take? Is there a time limit? Do the rest of us have to suffer the actions of dictatorships indefinitely? Example, in 2006, Putin murdered Alexander Litvinenko, in England, with Polonium. In 2018, he murdered an innocent British citizen, in England, with Novichok. England is a democracy that has never threatend to attack or invade Russia, no western country has ever threatened to attack Russia, NATO has never threatened to attack Russia. Soviet governments invented a western threat to keep themselves in power. Putin has taken that concept to another level. You watch too much RT, maybe?

I feel sad that i had to scroll down so much, to find someone with a realistic view of the currant situation. Most of the people in these comments would prefer a totalitarian regime for perceived "safety and security" while at the expanse of others. And that scares me. Sadly I won't be able to visit Belarus and see the rest of my family in the near future, because of this oppressive dictatorship. #freebelarus

Not sure what the author means by "Europe" given it is neither a real continent and its status as a geopolitical entity is more somebody's imagination than anything else, but Montenegro is still ruled by the iron fist of Milo Djukanovic, but nobody cares because he is in NATO and is pro-EU. It's only because Lukashenka reists the will of the West that they call him a dictator. Outside of the US and about of its 30 vassal regimes including all neocolonial regimes that line up the eastern shores of the North Atlantic, he is not seen as a dictator by any of them. At the same time, nobody truly considers the regimes of any Western nation truly democratic. Faces sure change, but policies remain obdurately inflexible.

Maybe because Lukashenka is a dictator?
@99Boiko2 жыл бұрын
@@Alex-nt7uh ...oe maybe everything I said. Isn't it funny that everyone who brands Lukashenko a "dictator" all seem to have two things in common.1) They are all transphllic supporters of the EU and NATO. 2) They have zero evidence that there exists a more popular choice of president in Belarus.
@Alex-nt7uh2 жыл бұрын
@@99Boiko yes, I support EU and NATO and democracy in general. You know, freedom of assembly, voice, press, elections, etc. None are present in Belarus. Sounds like a dictatorship, correct?
@99Boiko2 жыл бұрын
@@Alex-nt7uh Incorrect. Until such time you demonstrate your burden of proof. I'm not interested in the crap to emanate from the corporate media as they are certifiable detractors of a Belarusian state that is friends with Russia and independent of the global deep state. Meanwhile, you are welcome to support NATO and the EU, and you are welcome to support "democracy in general", but it's one or the other, because if you know the EU & NATO as well as I do then you'll be aware that the shoehorning of Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Montenegro into NATO could be said to have been a lot of things, but "democratic" isn't one of them. That goes for their accession to the EU as well, whether full members such as Croatia (where less than half voted to join in 2012), or EU candidacy such as Macedonia with its shifty name change where which the public in one fell swoop rejected: the name change, EU membership and NATO membership, all in 2018. The Zaev regime and his EU handlers didn't give a shit; they just railroaded the country into the event horizon. Go read about it. So you like free speech then? If you live in the EU, you won't be able to watch RT or Sputnik now. I don't claim you would wish to, but how does it feel knowing the reason you can't watch them is because you have been told by your masters in the unelected Commission that you cannot - because it is being switched off due to "disinformation". Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a supranational organisation of any kind merely answerable to the media? Apart from the fact that the shadow-banning of the networks violates the EU's charter on free speech, I'd like to know who appointed a body that is beholden to all of the media as a paragon of honesty that will decree who spreads "disinformation" and who spreads the "facts". Nobody forces you to watch RT, but in a democracy, whose choice is it? Yours? Or an elite whose appointment you had no say over? Fuck the 16 million KZbin subscribers (the record for any news network); fuck the millions who watched RT UK in Slovenia, Croatia and Bulgaria. You see, it doesn't matter what you personally think about RT, because it's the thin end of the wedge. From the shadow-banning of RT/Sputnik to the incarceration of Julian Assange - the whole thing is one dirty attack on the fourth estate. The EU is happy for you to know about the Ukraine crisis, so long as the information reaches you via their approved operators: corporate media such as that what is Rupert Murdoch-owned, and state-owned media in the West such as the BBC and Voice of America. Nobody else will do. That's not freedom, and that's not democracy; and the US is no different - shutting down RT America and weeding out two candidates for every presidential race. Each "election" compels a media circus that gets bigger ad bigger with time - for what is nothing more than Tweedledee vs Tweedledum. You get no say in the preliminary process, and if you want a candidate who will recognise the State of Palestine, he will never be forthcoming. You choose between two clowns who will serve the banks and the deep state. That's not democracy friend.
