She just had the „certain something“. This program was a tribute from Katarina to Sarajevo, where she had won her first Olympic Gold medal 10 years before. During the war in the 90s the skating rink where the Olympic competition took place had been completely destroyed, like most of Sarajevo. Katarina was so sad about this that she decided to make this program as a tribute to the people there. The song „where have all the flowers gone“ is actually a sad song about the war. She had this music arranged for her. The steps from 2.58 for example resemble the marching of soldiers. Katarina wanted to go to the Olympics one more time not to win a medal, just for herself as a free person without the pressure of having to win. She wanted to enjoy the Olympic experience, she said in an interview some years ago.

I remember watching this and being so moved. I'm sure she had some hopes of getting a medal when she went in to compete (I mean, who wouldn't?) but by this time it would have been clear to her that it wasn't going to happen. But you know what? All the others were trying to outdo each other with jumps and leaps and showing off their technique, and Witt went out there doing a sincere, heartfelt routine. Sure, it may be low-key, it may not be the greatest ever...but there's emotion and heart behind it, rather than just raw ambition, and that makes a huge difference.

Truer words have never been spoken. I didn't see this Olympics because I wasn't born yet, but I like watching videos of these performances because I'm interested in Olympic history. Watching this moves me to tears every time. Without a doubt the most heartfelt performance of the games, and it didn't have to be risky and daring for it to be so. If only we could see more of that feeling these days.

I know the whole ~classic~ figure skating crowd loves to debate all of these performances, who should have won, how unfair the judging system was, etc. But as someone who only really started watching figure skating in the past few years (and doesn't have any childhood nostalgia and biases clouding my opinions) I gotta say, SO many of these women's performances from the 80s and 90s seem so similar and simple with just the bare minimum of arm flailing passing for choreography. THIS program, however, has true artistry. I could watch this again and again.

victreebel She in my opinion, and I remember watching this performance, was more powerful to me with her grace and the way she skated. She was powerful and her jumps seemed so effortless to me. @Juice_Lover1234 жыл бұрын
Exactly. She still passed off in 1994 by showing up trying to say something. Her contribution to the sport was the creation of programs that wanted more than just a few triples. It demanded acknowledgment of the music. A character to identify with. Not just a Lutz with a smile.

I recorded this on my VHS in 1994 and watched it over and over again. Thanks for sharing this video. This was one of the best programs in figure skating history, so moving and so touching. As figure skating is one of Olympic "sports", most skater concentrate on their technical skills even now and back then. However this presentation by Katarina showed us that figure skating is really an "art" itself. Numerical values cannot show the value of her artistic expression except if we could count the number of hearts that she stole from the crowd. I think her decision to participate in the 1994 Olympics was what made her a true legend.
