She just had the „certain something“. This program was a tribute from Katarina to Sarajevo, where she had won her first Olympic Gold medal 10 years before. During the war in the 90s the skating rink where the Olympic competition took place had been completely destroyed, like most of Sarajevo. Katarina was so sad about this that she decided to make this program as a tribute to the people there. The song „where have all the flowers gone“ is actually a sad song about the war. She had this music arranged for her. The steps from 2.58 for example resemble the marching of soldiers. Katarina wanted to go to the Olympics one more time not to win a medal, just for herself as a free person without the pressure of having to win. She wanted to enjoy the Olympic experience, she said in an interview some years ago.

Zetra Rink is now rebuilt if anyone is in Sarajevo. It's a walk or a bus ride far outside the old city but you can walk easily if you know the city. They have public skating and if you are nice, will let you look around the locker rooms and things. It's very special.

I remember watching this and being so moved. I'm sure she had some hopes of getting a medal when she went in to compete (I mean, who wouldn't?) but by this time it would have been clear to her that it wasn't going to happen. But you know what? All the others were trying to outdo each other with jumps and leaps and showing off their technique, and Witt went out there doing a sincere, heartfelt routine. Sure, it may be low-key, it may not be the greatest ever...but there's emotion and heart behind it, rather than just raw ambition, and that makes a huge difference.

Truer words have never been spoken. I didn't see this Olympics because I wasn't born yet, but I like watching videos of these performances because I'm interested in Olympic history. Watching this moves me to tears every time. Without a doubt the most heartfelt performance of the games, and it didn't have to be risky and daring for it to be so. If only we could see more of that feeling these days.

She did not have any hopes to medal. Yet, she was disappointed, look at her face. Her performance at her German Nationals 94 was the closest the she would want to get it to be. But still: She made her point . She was beautiful out there. @@unleashedgeek7295

I'm not a great lip-reader, but it looks like, after she brings her hands down and has that disappointed look, she says, "I'm sorry." Like she had hoped to do better, not for a medal, but for whomever she was honoring with her skate.

I know the whole ~classic~ figure skating crowd loves to debate all of these performances, who should have won, how unfair the judging system was, etc. But as someone who only really started watching figure skating in the past few years (and doesn't have any childhood nostalgia and biases clouding my opinions) I gotta say, SO many of these women's performances from the 80s and 90s seem so similar and simple with just the bare minimum of arm flailing passing for choreography. THIS program, however, has true artistry. I could watch this again and again.

victreebel She in my opinion, and I remember watching this performance, was more powerful to me with her grace and the way she skated. She was powerful and her jumps seemed so effortless to me. I think her and Tonya, in my opinion, were both strong athletic and Nancy was more cautious and safe? They all were beautiful and each mastered their place in skating history.

Exactly. She still passed off in 1994 by showing up trying to say something. Her contribution to the sport was the creation of programs that wanted more than just a few triples. It demanded acknowledgment of the music. A character to identify with. Not just a Lutz with a smile.

Where have the flowers gone long time passing is a wondeful tribute she did and the song has a lot of meaning also. My significant other passed away last Feb on the 6th and he loved gardens and planting vegetables and the such!! I will miss him again this summer and spring!! I have planted 3 Clematis vines in his honor 1 was donated the other 2 I bought 1 full price the other half off. they did great last year and hopefully again this year. He loved to be outdoors but he developed cancer Kidney but he did what he could do in the sun chemo doesn't let your body sweat so he had to be very careful and I had to tell him when enough was enough or he would listen to his body. This song means so much to katerina Witt and me also. Where have all the flowers Gone??? I will see my flower/angel in heaven and he knows this and we will be buried together he was only 73 he died on Feb 6th 1 month after his birthday on Jan 6th 2018. He lived a very active life even before I met him and he loved the outdoors and so do I!! I help a friend with her horse and they both love me!! See you in heaven my Richard till the end and forever we will be together my one and only love!!

I recorded this on my VHS in 1994 and watched it over and over again. Thanks for sharing this video. This was one of the best programs in figure skating history, so moving and so touching. As figure skating is one of Olympic "sports", most skater concentrate on their technical skills even now and back then. However this presentation by Katarina showed us that figure skating is really an "art" itself. Numerical values cannot show the value of her artistic expression except if we could count the number of hearts that she stole from the crowd. I think her decision to participate in the 1994 Olympics was what made her a true legend.

Katarina should have just done a special exhibition performance at these Olympics with this program. While being brave to compete, she just wasn't bringing the technical content. Her layback was stunning here.

She did the right thing. To express her pain about the war and also her own pain of losing her identity war more important for her instead of winning with an easier topic. She is still the queen, a role model for everyone and unforgetable.
