One of the things I like most about Minthara is how self-aware she is. She knows that Drow society is messed up by the standards of the other races. She knows that a parental relationship like she had isn't ideal. She knows that her views are harsh and her morals cruel. She just believes that it's neccessary because the world is cruel. She's not evil, she's jaded. She's a product of the life she's lived, but there are many glimpses of a kinder heart and of a more thoughtful mind, that peek through at times. 10/10 writing. Such a complex character.
@lewnaticАй бұрын
This is my favorite part of the more morally grey characters in the party--Astarion, Minthara and early-game Lae'zel have this commonality where you can see that they recognize cruelty, they recognize kindness, but they have lived lives that taught each of them that cruelty is needed, that ensuring survival comes before trying to create a bond or help others. The fact that keen eyes will spot fear in their body language, usually followed by their harsher sides--it's so *real.* The fact that everyone in the party has been written with deep empathy even for their more evil sides is honestly legendary.
@rustkarlАй бұрын
Not so much complex as much as it is well reasoned and more importantly well portrayed. You can easily tell that Minthara’s often psychopathic responses to most normal social situations is a direct result of a life lived in a web of advantage, treachery and utilitarianism which she applies to all things. While it may not be necessary in Baldurian society she still sees such harshness as an advantage to take in a softer social climate if no-one else is willing to take such advantages.
@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_HumanАй бұрын
@@rustkarl And how rare is that in video games? Not that many studios yet have really taken full advantage of the storytelling and character building possibilities of games, many of which are unique to the medium. A movie can't make you be the one to pull the trigger and shoot a doctor, and a book can't give you the chance to make a genuine sacrifice to help others like Nier Automata did. I could probably count less than 20 games with characters nearly as nuanced and deep as BG3's. The sheer amount of time you spend with them lets them be more fleshed out than any movie or TV character, and the interactive, choice driven aspect of gaming allows you to explore different parts of their personalities like no book could.
@Fearnil15 күн бұрын
She's evil *as a consequent* of being jaded. There's a difference. You can be jaded and choose to be kind (be a good person); she chooses to be cruel and as such, she's evil. Cruelty is a necessary and sufficient condition for evil. And yeah, she is a very well written (if a tiiiiny bit overacted) complex character - her being evil doesn't remove from how complex she is. Her glimpses of a capacity for kindness make her complex, and also drive the contrast of how much of a monster she chooses to be.

I don’t think Jaheira’s children disrespect her or she has little less love for them. I 100% believe that the way they talk is how they show love and affection to one another. Sarcastic, tough and rough but they clearly love each other. The reason why Rion speaks “disrespectfully” towards her mother is because she was scared, relief and angry with how she suddenly left without talking to them. But in Jaheira’s defense. She love her children so much she’s couldn’t bear to say goodbye knowing it maybe her last time seeing them. Charging towards kethric thorm and the absolute is no easy fight after all. Maybe seeing her kids for the last time will kick in her mother side and leave the harpers just to keep them safe. And that’s not her. Jaheira is a good mother. And Her children love her very much.

What I love about Minthara’s character is how most of her more psychotic attitudes can be traced back to the life she’s lived to the point that such cutthroat ruthlessness is both second nature and matured by necessity from her surrounding environment. Unlike most examples coming out of said environment doesn’t redeem her or break her worldview but does give her just enough distance to see why it doesn’t fit with the rest of the world. She’s never really given a concrete reason to abandon it either, even if such lengths are perhaps not a necessity in other societies they would instead be an advantage within such softer societies. She does have some personal walls she may let down and gains a modicum of self-awareness through which she might let the player see some vulnerability, which still places her apart from many Lolthsworn, providing a much more palatable insight to the mindset of that culture.

I mean, both are right. Jaheria is right to try keep her loved ones from the risk of death, but Minthara is right to say they need to know how to kill just incase. It's wise to avoid putting yourself in danger if you can, but it's wiser still to know how to kill that danger should it be unavoidable.

I like how she has the self awareness to be like "my life is fucked up so don't base my relationship with my parent as a standard"

Glad they made it so you can recruit her while saving the grove, she has such a unique perspective on everything and falls squarely in lawful evil but enough leeway to allow her to go into neutral, her being evil feels like it’s just natural and practical given the circumstances of the world and when presented an alternative she’s open to it. “Life is conflict” but she says with hesitation meaning if she can avoid conflict then she would but that’s an ideal the pragmatic solution and reality is to be prepared.

Holy shit, Minthara makes me think of my grandmother. She was a hard and realistic woman, not really maternally warm, but practical and effective.

Eh I dont really think someone who "coddles" their kid is a worse mother than someone who (quite likely seriously) threatens to murder her own child for simply being disrespectful.

Her heart died with Khalid in Irenicus’s dungeons, torn to pieces each time she heard his screams followed by the silence death should have brought, but he was not allowed the peace of death, he was brought back and tortured over and over and over. Her heart died a thousand times in that dungeon, and from then on the feeling of love became synonymous with the screams of endless torment.

The only Baenre that I'd trust to be a good mother is Liriel.

I am honestly surprised that she had the insight to not consider her relationship with her mother the ideal example.
