The stories are not bad either but as with most 2nd tier Dc books it slipped from public attention and in an age where most kids probably had a low budget for buying comic books they were a last or second to last choice sometimes picked up if a higher choice was sold out.

SSSsshhhhhh!! I either have completed, or I'm actively collecting, all of these except the Charlton titles as I am a reader foremost. Back before the internet/Ebay/etc., it was virtually impossible to compile large runs of these titles by hunting in the wild or conventions. Maybe that has something to do with their desirability even today. Out of sight, out of mind. The title which is difficult, even with the internet, for me has been My Greatest Adventure. That one is a challenge.....wowzer. I'm sometimes in disbelief that some of those issues even exist in any condition other than "run over by a truck", if you can find a copy at all. I'm also putting together the DC war titles and the Marvel western titles. The difficulty with those is the sheer number of issues, along with condition.

Sea devils is Russ Heath covers, he also is credited with doing the comics in playboy for about 20 years. Russ heath also made the advertisement in almost every silver age comic of the army men you can buy which ended up being 2D and no kid liked it, and Russ was unhappy with it, but he was paid 50 dollars for each different type of toys they sold. So he made a few hundred dollars total.

First time viewer/retired television journalist here. You do a very good job, sir. I bought many of these in my yout (as in "two youts"), but I can't say I was a collector of any. A favorite of mine perhaps would have made your list had it been a bit longer...Silver Age Spectre. One quick question for you. Atom and Hawkman made the list separately... but no mention of the 7-issue run of "The Atom & Hawkman" in '68 and '69? Finally, one comment about another title. What made Metal Men really fun was the sarcasm-infused humor missing from almost all other DC titles at the time.
@bobbuethe1477Күн бұрын
"The Atom & Hawkman" was a continuation of the numbering of "The Atom." Hawkman's title was cancelled and Atom's was changed into a combination book, which alternated full-length team-ups with separate stories of the two heroes.
@noozienomoreКүн бұрын
@@bobbuethe1477 Of course. So don't you think it would have been worth a brief mention?
@bobbuethe1477Күн бұрын
@@noozienomore Absolutely. I was just pointing out that some collectors consider it a continuation of "The Atom" rather than a separate title. (At least, that's how I sort it in my collection.) But it should have been mentioned.

Charlton is such an underrated company, they brought us characters so good that they inspired Watchmen characters. Rorschach being a dark parody of The Question will always be cool to me.

It’s so funny that you mention comics like Hawkman, The Atom, Rip Hunter, Metal Men, etc. Because ALL of those books have been rebooted/pushed SO many times. And, EVERY time the comics bomb and get cancelled. Personally, I think it’s because there’s nothing about those characters for most people to latch onto. BUT, each of those characters has fanatics who LOVE them. It’s just the people who love them are few and far between. They’re like Gorgonzola cheese. Most people hate it. But, those who love it, LOVE it
@justicierodelaliga5 күн бұрын
With Atom, DC barely gives his a chance. His original series wasn´t that long. The one that came after (Sword of the Atom) and the only one that truly made use of his subatomic powers (if just to make him live on an undiscovered world) lasted even less. Not sure if it was only meant to be a mini series. ...and by the time he came back they decided to create a legacy character. Has for Hawkman with the Venditti series it proved how great it can be. Basically an Indiana Jones character. ...heck, even the New 52 take (turning him basically into Wolverine) was fun as well.

The Sea Devil covers are some of the shining lights of Silver Age art. Anyone who has a respectable full run of DC Showcase is either very rich, or been a great trader, lucky or all of these.
@PaulSaether2 күн бұрын
Even if you had a full run of Showcase that you bought for cover price when they came out you would not still have them unless you were very rich! You could sell a high grade run for a fortune, buy everything in archive/Omnibus Editions and buy a nice house and take a round the world cruise. So you WOULD sell them unless you were very rich. I've often wondered if Paul McCartney has a collection. He had Silver Age DCs on his piano in HELP (Or maybe HARD DAY's NIGHT) Met Stan LEE and wrote a song about MAGNETO AND THE TITANIUM MAN, and he loved RUPERT THE BEAR so much that he wrote a song and made a video about THE FROG CHORUS (And met Alfred Bestall). I'm sure Macca loved BEANO, DANDY, LION and EAGLE comics too. Hope he somehow gets to read this comment and sends me an invite to spend a few days in his comic library if he does have one!

This is SUCH a wonfderful video James. You know what's funny? As a CHILD (I'm 57, so were talking back when i was 11) I actually liked- and collected- BOTH Hawkman AND The Atom-- even though there was no "reason" to lump them together. I MYSELF however- for whatever reason--lumped them together! Maybe it had to do with the fact that they both kind of came on the Silver Age scene around the same time, or possibly it was because they just "felt" like kindered spirits for whatever reason but yeah: I bought Hawkman # 1 as a 12-year old and The Atom # 5 at the same time. 40m years later I sent them to CGC and after a C & P, Hawkman 1 came back a 6.0 and The Atom 5b came back a 7.0! With all the moving around I did and with how (relatively) poorly those books were treated (back before I knew anything about "protection"- at least in the COMIC BOOK SENSE lol) it was/is a minor miracle that they managed to make to back, slabbed, in those respectable grades. Anyway they're firmly in my PC, and now thanks to YOU (Damn you James), I am checking/searching for more of these books... See what you started?!? Seriously though- THANK YOU FOR AN AWESOME TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE. Man was THAT a fun vid to watch. Great work brother! Hey man last question: how old are you if you don't mind me asking? I'm just curious because you know SO MUCH about SA comics and yet if I had to guess, you were likely BORN in the 80s (which makes it all the more impressive. I'm not saying that you have to be FROM an era in order to talk about it, it's just always great to see younger people into the books that were the staple of my Bronze Age childhood. I was surrounded by comics from the 60s- which for me was simply "last decade"- whereas for you it must've seemed like "That's when dinosaurs walked the earth"). Anyhoo, once again big up to you and your channel- and i can't wait to drop into your store someday soon.

Steve Ditko, Tom Sutton, Pete Morisi, and Sanho Kim, are the main four I think, though later on there was a few Joe Staton, then some Rich Larsen and Mike Zeck. Great stuff! I have two long boxes full of Charlton comics myself. Most are 7-8, maybe a couple dozen are 4-5s just to fill runs until I can upgrade them. I have a few with double covers too! Mostly horror, but a lot of Captain Atom and Space adventures. I have some western stuff but I think the best were Cheyenne Kid and Geronimo Jones.
