the practical effects of these movies is so good it still holds up today. no one would go through that effort nowadays. J5 wouldve been 90% CGI and be soulless. as is, he is a classic protagonist and the stories arent perfect but they are tight and fast paced with plenty of humor and character progression that make you care the entire way through and you do FEEL that J5 is ALIVE. the scene were hes beaten nearly to death still gets me sad even today. also, his voice was perfect. somehow a great mix of curiosity, energy, love, and even aggression as needed. its such a great experience seeing these movies and how much effort went into making them so good.

The change to Ben's last name, from what I heard, was because the original name, Jabituya, was a pun name that wasn't meant to be taken seriously. When Ben became the central character of the sequel, they felt that it was too inappropriate for the main character, so they changed it. I saw what was the alleged third movie script, one time; IIRC, it had Ben and Johnny go to California to help Ben's mentor with a NASA-funded University project that ends up getting some Soviet spies involved, and Johnny 5 takes up the theater class while there. It was interesting, but I felt the "Spies infiltrate to steal the NASA project" plot to be too similar to the second movie's plot. While the first movie will always be my favorite (I skip the Sandy/Ben interactions for being schmaltzy), I feel like the sequel gave a better feel of the struggles of Johnny 5 to convince people that he's alive; in the first movie, he hardly interacted with anyone beyond Newton at the end and Stephanie, so we didn't really get to know what the average person would react to seeing him living life outside (which, I believe, is what the creators wanted), but in the sequel, he interacts with the general public all the time, so we really get an idea of how people would treat him.

As a kid, I actually saw this one before the first. I had a VHS tape with a TV airing of the sequel recorded on it.

Hi! I actually saw the second one first. I loved it, and when after several years I saw the first one I decided I liked them both equaly. Cheers from Poland!

While the first film introduced us Johnny Five, the squeal is my favourite. On discovering badly beaten Johnny Five 😢, I thought Michael McKean gave a spine tingling performance. He and his silk shirt made me laugh 😂. Love 80s films ❤

This was the very version of Short Circuit I grew up on, and I love it.

I really loved this movie as a kid, surprised to hear it was a box office disappointment but whatever, it lives long in the memory. Thanks for the video

The kiss of death for any franchise is being sold to Disney. In fact, I am starting to hate Star Wars IV-VI because of crappy Star Wars VII - IX was.
No kidding, this is probably still my favorite movie. Has been for 30+ years. And I don't care so much for the original! The creativity of the company Ben was making and the do it yourself nature, combined with the caper nature of the escape... Man, it just hits everything my inner 9 year old loves.

SC-2 ran on a over the air TV channel around 3mo ago. The film fell flat. 1980s. Like a few other cash grabs 🤑. Cocoon, Crocodile Dundee, etc.
