I saw Vacation in the theater with my family in 1983. I thought it was hilarious but my Dad was in tears he was laughing so hard. At age nine I didn't realize exactly why it was so funny to him. He had just found a movie that made him feel "represented " to use today's terminology.

As a kid in the late 70s and early 80s. This movie captured the cross country road trip perfectly. There was always a disaster right around the corner. Bored out of your mind for hours traveling across Kansas\Nebraska\Iowa. And the cars back then were such crap they rarely made the trip without at least one repair. Air travel was so expensive it required driving for most of us. Kids always wanted to fly, parents couldnt afford it. Always had to travel hundreds of miles out of the way to visit some cousin you would never see again. By the 3rd day parents hate each other from the stress Ect ect. John Huges was a genius when it came to these movies. He really captured Americana of the time period.

My two pennies: Clark's career working with preservatives mirrors his life's theme; as things always go bad around him, he works hard to preserve the good, to salvage the situation. Yep. The Whipper Snapper is the Great American Revolution, designed by Anton Schwarzkopf with the first modern vertical loop. Some of the POV footage was used in the movie Rollercoaster. The Screaming Meenie was actually Colossus which opened as one of the largest wooden coasters in the world. Colossus has since been remodeled as Twisted Colossus. It used to have two separate tracks but now it has one continuous track. I got to ride Revolution in ‘91 it was a fun ride and at that time still had only the lap restraints. It was very surreal riding a ride I had seen many times in Rollercoaster and Vacation before ever getting to actually visit. I rode again in 2001, but they had installed over the shoulder restraints. Very unnecessary.

The closest situation to a "Vacation" moment happened in the early 1980s. My aunt and uncle and other relatives went to Disney Land. We were living in Law Vegas at the time so it was a 4 hour drive. No problems on the way there or at the theme park. However, on the way back we had car trouble. We managed to stop in this town, more of a test stop it was so small if you blinked you'd miss it. Anyway at the gas station (garage) some guys offered to fix the van but wanted an outrageous amount of money. So my uncle called his brother and he drove down to two is back. A short time after we were back on the road the cops pulled us over. The guys at the gas station has called them and said we were smuggling drugs. Fortunately the whole thing was quickly resolved.

Mate. Watched a whole lot of your vids this morning. I had no idea you were a local Frankston boy. I assumed it was made by a professional US KZbinr. Good clips. Good graphics. Good music. Not too long not too short. Really professional. The only suggestion to make it even better. Your desk shots are great with a good array of stuff around you. Speaking into a mic would sound a lot better. Greats vids. 10/10.

"I'm So Excited" being replaced is like the same issue I have with "I Love The Nightlife" from Love At First Bite being replaced with some generic disco song. The movie just isn't the same to me without that song/ dance number.

Wow this is a great video!! I'm a longtime fan of the movie and have seen it at least 2 dozen times over the years. In the 80's and 90's I had a version that I had recorded from TV and the weed parts were cut out, which made the motel scene where Russ tells Audrey she doesn't even inhale, mysterious. I can't remember if it had "I'm So Excited" or not. My sister and I watched that TV version over and over hehe. I need to find the lost scenes now, especially the ending!

Remember seeing it for the first time. My parents taped it off BBC1. Needless to say the “f” word was bleeped out. Which for me was even funnier. Especially with Clark’s meltdown in the car. That still makes me chuckle

As usual, a great video from Minty. No doubt NL's "Family Truckster" contributed in some small way to consigning the iconic "Brady Mobile" into history's junkyard; however, the demise in the States of the immensely popular station wagon was primarily the result of changes in Federal fuel efficiency requirements by vehicle class. the changes made the design untenable and ultimately gave rise to the SUV class of vehicle.

My understanding is during the test screenings, the movie got great reaction, however during the last 20 mins the audiences was deadly quiet. They also all seemed disappointed, because they went on this entire journey and never got to Wally World. That’s why the ending was redone

Thanks Disneyland! You're TRULY the happiest place on earth! lol :P

5:26 it was Six Flags in Valencia, California . The “hostage/cop” ending of the movie takes place where the Revolution coaster gets out. The actress that played Audrey ended up being a semi-regular on Beverly Hills 90210. And Cousin Eddy’s daughter is the great Jane Krakowski

#11. The roller coaster featured in the film is the infamous Eagle, located at Six Flags Great America, just South of Chicago. The tallest wooden racing rollercoaster in America. I remember them running it backwards every year during Halloween. Truly terrifying.

You are wrong, the wood coaster and the "Whipper Snapper" were both at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif. (Verified with IMDB) That is where ALL of the Wally World scenes were shot. The woodie was "Colossus" and the loop was "Revolution" (As they were known back then. Both great coasters BTW.)

This movie came out right before my family took my favorite vacation of all time to Eureka Springs, AR. It was my parents, my brother, my grandmother, and me. We called it an adventure, because nothing quite worked out as planned, yet we had the time of our lives! And my grandmother was way more fun than the old aunt in the movie. My dad even asked the girl at the McDonald’s drive thru how to get to Wally World. To this day, I keep the marionette my dad slipped me the money to buy (despite my mother saying no and that it costs too much) in my room. This movie makes me happy, because I remember that trip we took in a crowded car. I remember the old dinosaur park we found, and how we begged our parents to take us, which they eventually turned the car around and did. This movie brings back a lot of good memories.
