Minute Of Angle (MOA) Made Easy

The other title was going to be MOA for dummies :) This is a SIMPLE breakdown of how to understand where I prove that I can NOT do simple math at 2AM! Watch the video, you'll understand. But the purpose of this video is NOT to make you an expert at MOA, it is to keep people from looking dumb on the range talking about things when they have NO idea how it works. I am NOT claiming to be, by anyone's standards, a supreme expert on MOA, however for anyone that is going to undertake longer range shooting the ideas within are essential for moving forward and becoming better at long rang engagements. Again this is a VERY BASIC breakdown to help people understand the concept, so please don't get technical in the arguments and take it for what it was meant to be.

the key is to "know your ammo".... every type of round has a certain known drop at a given distance.... all you have to do is divide that drop by the number of 100 yards you are shooting...... its very simple..... you research your ammo and find that it drops 54" at 600yds.. moa is 1"~ every 100yds 54/6=9 ... you would turn it 9 clicks and aim at whatever your shooting at... the height of the target is virtually irrelevant at similar elevations....

What a great video for explaining this. I've crunched numbers etc before and it never revealed what the conceptual basis for MOA was and therefore minus a scientific calculator and scratch paper I was lost, especially if moving to a different rifle. This brought home the foundation and the functional "rubber meets the road" meat and potatoes of application of the concept and how it relates to optic adjustment. Now with an optic I can rough judge distance with the parallax setting and then know my holdover to compensate for bullet drop! Thank you very much, god bless.

I thought about what you were saying and analyzed it on paper.I understand clearly now.MOA only means angle of bullet drop.Draw a line from 54"high to 0"over 600Y and lines for every 100Y it crosses. A bullet drops at the same speed weather free falling or projected with powder.9"every 100Y(9+9+9+9+9+9)One must offset this by changing the angle to form a arch!The greater the distance,the larger the arch"higher in middle"But each bullet has different ballistics.Thanks for making me think about it

Very simple run down of minute of angle...while reading some other comments, well, I don't want to be harsh but if you don't or can't understand 1 MOA at 100yards is 1" and the trend of increasing 1" every 100 yards to 1000 yards I am wondering if you should be shooting long distances or even shooting at all. The place the 2 lines (scope/barrel)of paralex cross is the focal point.But this is to be adjusted at a known distance.So number 0-6 about 1 inch spaced and the top line is from the scope and the bottom line is from the barrel.The focal point is the crossing at the numbered distance.This explains that if off 1 foot at 100Y than off 2 foot at 200Y.600Y is 6x what you are zeroed in at(100Y)If bullet drop of 54in @600Y (you need to unmultiply "divide!" by 6. 54in@600Y/6=9. Our 54in drop is 9MOA

Here’s simple: scopes adjust in MOA which describes inches of bullet movement at target distance, 1 inch at 100 yards, 2 inches at 200 yards, 3 inches at 300 yards…Example bullet is 2 inches off mark at 100 yards so since an MOA equals 1 inch at 100 yards the sight adjustment need is 2 MOA.

It does have something to do with it if you are shooting at something other than paper at a known distance. If you intend to use it in the field, yes, you need to be able to range with a mildot scope. And it has EVERYTHING to do with it. You can't learn everything from a KZbin video, and it you read the other comments below it has helped many understand.

After watching the video I read some of the comments and yours helped me visualize it. So easy.. I never zeroed my scope in, only adjusted to hit target at 50 yards. 1.Zero scope 2.Find known bullet drop 3.Divide by 100yard groups to find the MOA focal point 4. Adjust scope for distance. My only question with this is can't you just use the dots on the cross hairs to do the same thing if temporally shooting a greater distance?

The man has given you a good lesson on the background of and workings of how scope manufact. use MOA as a point of ref. There are a dozen or better reasons how you could get the differ. It takes 3 to 5 shots to zero a gun. If your taking a box or more, I bet the person in the mirror may be offering more problems than the formula is defending.

I have to agree with some - not too clear. I've taught minute of angle concept as a preparation for teaching how to zero a rifle to patrol rifle classes. I've taught it to the point of mathematical proof which is what was attempted here and learned that it is a waste of time and effort because it has no practical value to the shooter. A minute of angle is most simply defined as 1/60th (one sixtieth) of 1 degree of angle. That's about as complicated as the discussion really needs to get. So when you click that scope up one minute of angle, you have adjusted the trajectory of your shot up 1/60th of a degree. It is important to know what that means in terms of inches when you are trying to make your bullet hit where you're aiming at whatever range your target is. The important thing to teach to shooters is that 1 minute of angle = 1" PER hundred yards on the range. Not 1.047 or any other measurement of thousandths. Why? because .047 inches at 100 yards is insignificant just as .47" at a thousand yards is insignificant... It's splitting hairs and it's counterproductive especially considering you can't shoot a .47" group at a thousand anyway. The graphic at 4:15 is the most practical info in the video - would be better to cut the decimal places out and not talk too much about it. Not meant as a dig against you. It's obvious you understand MOA brother - getting someone with no knowledge about it to understand it is another matter and I think the video drifted into explaining everything you know about it which is way more than a shooter needs to know to function.

Thanks for your attempt to explain MOA in layman's terms, even though I have learned more about it at the range sighting in at 100yrds using the center of the cross hair, then shooting at 500yrds using the top of the heavy plex of a standard duplex reticle and it proved the concept 1 inch @ 100 yards did come out a 5 inch group @ 500 despite the irrelevant hold over to hit the target, so long as your rifle is up to the task and loads are good ie Extreme spread and Standard deviation, but that's another aspect/topic. My non professional opinion is that if your scope doesn't have the ballistic plex built in, one has to do it manually. Also, if at a distance so far the target might be out of the scopes range and must be compensated for the distance drop. But I understand what you are saying and if your scope has the MOA dots, it is faster to use them. Just got off the phone with CCI and found out that all their bullets are hand made and was sent a ballistics chart for each bullet "Very cool!"

It's so simple. People just think too hard. Determine size of your tgt in inches and divide by moa reading on reticle (you can multiply by 100 if you want but it's really only moving the decimal point two spaces). So, if your tgt is an average 12" tall Priairie Dog and you measure it at 3 moa tall on your reticle, the target is at 400 yards (12/3=4). Or, you read 1.5 moa = 12/1.5 = 8.00 or 800 yards. If your target is a Plains Coyote that averages 9" from top of fur on back to bottom of fur on brisket, and you measure 2.5 moa on your reticle, it works like this: 9/2.5=3.60 or 360 yards. So, basically if you measure a coyote at 3 moa or less they're at or beyond 300 yards, 3 moa or more and they're at or within 300 yds. So, the coyote is at 300 yards and you know you're 223 load in your Savage rifle with 18" barrel drops 9 inches (or 3 MOA) at 300 yards. Hold the 3 MOA tick mark (or .9 mil* mark if using mil reticle) center mass between top of back and bottom of brisket and pull the trigger (as long as you've confimed your ammo is zeroed to match your reticle!). Now, you do one: Your target is the avg man that measures 40" from top of head to bottom of crotch and you measure 7.2 MOA (or 2.1 mils*) via the reticle. What's the range in yards to the target? Keep it simple guys and crank up the practice on Blue Helmet Liners while pushing your range. *You can use MRAD reticles for MOA too, just use .10 MRAD stadia line as 1/3rd MOA measurement (3.43 MOA per Milliradian/10 = .343 x 3 = 1.029 moa - close enough). The formula for the milliradian conversion is to express your tgt size in yards, or portion thereof, for instance, a Plains Coyote is .25 of a yard (9/36=.25) and the P.D. is .333/yd, then multiply by 1000 if you want (it only moves decimal point) and divide by the mil measurement you read on your reticle. E.g. .25/.6=.417 or 417 yards. If the PD looks smaller than average, use 10" as your estimate of height then 10/36=.278/.8 mil = 348 yards. Hope that helps. (Answer for man size target: 555.5 yards)

RKBA so you take the size of object in inches, then divide by the size of object in minutes thru scope in reticle , and that's how many yards it is? So say a rabbit is 10 inches, in scope it's 3 minutes, that would mean it's about 330 yards out? Does it make a difference if you have sfp or ffp?

E.g. if 1/4 MOA adjustable turrets, it takes 4 clicks per moa regardless of range. So, if you need to move your bullet impact up 3 MOA, it's 3moa x 4 clicks=12 clicks up.

@@birdcityaz13 With an SFP scope you need to ensure it's set on the power setting the manufacturer has stipulated the reticle is aligned with (most often the highest but check owner's manual). Reticle readings on FFP scopes remain constant throughout their power range.

size of target in inchesX95.5divided my MOA in scope.= range to target, I use a vortex viper pst 6-24x50ffp and use strelok+ and I can engage targets with relative easy. strelok even compensates for wind if I know wind speed and direction. I usually go with full value wind @10mph and it works out pretty good. As long as my eye and math is right my shots are usually spot on.

I think being on the range and seeing the adjustments and impact points might help tie the math into the process. Wait a minute now.In your example,are you saying 9 clicks or 9 MOA? Most but certainly not all scopes have 1/4" MOA;meaning it would take 9x4 to get 36 "clicks" to raise your cross hairs the appropriate amount,right?

Being a math nut helps a person understand what your saying. Funny part a roofer or good carpenter is also going to see it based on the drawings. If you relate this to building a roof on a house, you have x= elevation y = length or distance. If you turn it into a building 1Moa at 500 yards is to a carpenter a 5-12 roof pitch if 1ft of roof travel =100 yards. 5 inches of rise per 100 yards. Easy enough. Now I know how to explain it to the knucklehead that works for me. He just wasn't getting it. Nice vid.

Last night's research led me to other research I'll share.Everything has gravitational attraction"car,person,your wallet."It is so small that you would never realize it though.The size of the earth gives 100 pounds of attraction.Which is a base measurement for other sized planets"moon 1/6 of earth.A pure mass object the same speed no matter the size of it.It falls at aprox 24 and every second it is in free fall it accelerates by 9.9Mps.Pertaining it has no force acting upon it"wind resistance.

Okay I've got a question. I'm shooting a 204 ruger that's zero is at 200 yards. Will that throw off the MOA? Today I went and shot 500 yards. My bullet impact is -28 inches. So I take 28 divide by my MOA which is 5.658 and its 4.966 inches. Well come up that on my scope and I'm not even on paper. Please help.

Yes sir. Went out yesterday and shot when the wind was blowing something terrible. But I was still able to make 5-6 inch groups. What if you consistently shoot a 1" group at 100 so that be 1×8 for 800 yards would be 8.37 inches?

Yes. So then to stay on target at 800 yards, you need to dial your scope up 8.25 turns. Assuming you have a 1/4 moa scope.

Let’s make it simpler, with a 1/4” scope….at 100yds = 4clicks…at 300yds = 12clicks….at 600 yds = 24clicks. Is this correct??? (So, whatever your yardage. Multiply x 4clicks).

The worlds fastest punch by Bruce Lee and the fastest kick by Frank Dux "Blood sport by Jean Claude VD. A punch covers aprox 2ft and kick aprox 5ft. The record punch is 66fps and kick 102fps. That means you'd get punched 33 times in 1 sec and kicked 20.4 in 1 sec. From the time a sound is made the brain receives it 1 millisecond later. Sound travels 1125fps. His audience are those with the inquisitive minds, those who don't just do as their told and take everything they hear as fact. Double Tap does an excellent job trying to explain WHY 1.047 inches determine 1 MOA, or 1 arc minute of circumference in a circle with a 100 yard radius. This video is THE ONLY video which attempts to do that. Most videos simply begin with the conclusion of this video. So, my hat goes off to the creator of this video; it made me think. But doing the math isn't hard. What is difficult is trying to visualize the geometry, and that took some extra work. In addition to understanding the geometry, some algebra and trigonometry are used. This diagram will give you a top view of the situation: tinhatranch.com/understanding-moa-and-how-to-calculate-it/#.WoBoNZPwZE4 You can see the shooter is in the center of a circle. The diagram would have been improved if it placed two dots on the target, which is tangent to the circle: one dot above the point of tangency (left of center line) and one below (right of center line), each representing one MOA (arc minute) in either direction. Double Tap has correctly explained how to calculate the distance between the missing dots. Also, visualize the target as having a circle on it since that is what you, the shooter, would be looking at. The MOA is the distance of 1" away from center. If you expand the radius of the circle to 200 yards, 300 yards, etc, the calculations for MOA double, triple, and so on. Double Tap shows this as well with the slide showing an angle with similar triangles at 100, 200, 300.....yards. Here is another way of looking at the shooter from the ground level: mathspig.wordpress.com/tag/sniper-maths/ In this view, you can imagine a cone extending from the muzzle of the rifle, with the vertex (top point) being at the rifle muzzle and the base of the cone (a circle) being on the target. You see a right triangle formed by a line splitting the cone by extending from the vertex perpendicular to the center of the target, forming the long leg of a right triangle, and the short leg being the radius of the target to the point of impact. The acute angle at the vertex of the cone is 1/60 th of one degree. The rest is right triangle trigonometry. It is interesting to see that tan(1/60) is equivalent to Double Tap's calculation of 0.0002908, which is 2π/21,600, or one unit of radius for any circle. Multiplying that by the number of inches in 100 yards produces our 1.047 inch minute of angle. Some people enjoy the math involved with shooting, and I wasn't able to understand some of the assumptions until I researched the geometry, then I could understand why 1/60th of a degree is the starting point. Thank you for your hard work in doing what few others have tried to do.
