@carsonhunt46424 жыл бұрын
Sam O i suppose that’s true, however while they obviously leaned left, I didn’t think they’d come out as full support for speech censoring, platform controlling, and controlled narratives for the public by big media 😂 To be fair, if they can convince why the general public is too stupid to have such freedoms perhaps I’d be inclined. To be honest, I've learned a lot about things from KZbin. Whether it's about black holes, quantum physics, human history, or even hotly debated topics like climate change. Additionally, it gives a voice for people of marginalised groups which can otherwise not reach the same amount of people with ease. I realise that it isn't ideal to let an ad-based for-profit company steer your knowledge and views, and I think that your comment was also a bit exaggerated on purpose, but I think it's too simple to say that it's bad that people trust KZbin.
@JohnEP2234 жыл бұрын
Perhaps KZbin could become more trustworthy if they created an internal Ministry of Truth to help steer the algorithms.
@hedgehog31804 жыл бұрын
@@rensoliemans143 I mean the problem is that people trust KZbin itself to be reliable. It's one thing to trust individual videos but it's another to just trust the platform itself. And that's generally a problem, but this is basically an education issue, to few schools in the US teach proper critical thinking and source skepticism. I'm not gonna pretend that other countries are perfect but it's definitely notable that in other countries whether or not Covid-19 exists and whether climate change exists is not a debate. In general people need to learn to be critical of information they receive and to do some basic fact checking, but it's generally easy to just accept things that support your beliefs.

1:28 I mean it's pretty hard to prevent misinformation and not catch something else in the cross-heir. Often times when people try to get rid of misinformation it ends up just straight up censoring content whether it be truthful, good or otherwise. It's a very delicate balance and unfortunately that's just how the internet works.
@MaxTax_4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and then some people would end up growing paranoid of the censorship and think that the truth is being hidden from them. Maybe some sort of credibility rating system instead of a censorship system could work better? If not, better education on misinformation and how to deal with it seems like another solution.

*engages to help* just a quick word on the side: It is not youtubes job to factcheck videos or recommend the fact checked ones. Neither is it for facebook or twitter to censor others, no matter how wrong they are. They can... but then they are interfering with free speech and equality. It is up to the parents to teach kids that not everything they see is correct. And that sometimes, they have to research for themselves. Which is why I fact check every video where I have reason to believe that they are wrong, misinformative or badly worded. It's not a perfect solution, since things that I already thought were true, but might not be don't get sorted out. But it is better than demanding platforms to fact check for you.

Check the description for linked sources. Also look at the channel's other videos. There is not a very easy way but usually all trustful creators have links to move material about the subject in their description. That does at least sort out a few videos presenting wrong information.
@kf101474 жыл бұрын
A lot misinformative videos also have highly edited/doctored thumbnails that do not appear in the video. Pay attention to if the info makes sense and see what channels they associate themselves with. Most of the good channels know each other and collaborate/cameo. Finding out the person who started the channel can also help by seeing their educational background. A lot of the reputable people have an undergrad science degree with further education in science communication or their field of choice. This isn't always true (Tom Scott has a linguistics degree for instance) Best of luck!

@ScytheNoire4 жыл бұрын
@@hopelessdecoy No. "First lie wins" is based on human cognitive studies about how most human minds will accept what they are told, build cognitive structures in their brain about that item, and then it becomes hard to destroy those mental links. And if a person already had a biased towards the lie, then the links are even stronger, the lie is more effective, because it reinforces the mental links we already have. But it's true of many untruths. Many people still think humans only use 10% of their brain or that we eat X number of spiders a year in our sleep, simply because they heard these lies early on and their brain refuses to break the mental bonds.

KZbin can't legally do it. They are a platform not a publisher. This is why science channels should stick to science. They are misleading people about the Law while complaining about people being mislead about science.
@jeremydavis36314 жыл бұрын
@Roy Riley Are you sure about that? I'm unfamiliar with the legal requirements of a global business like KZbin, but as a private company, I'd expect them to have the legal authority to decide whether to remove something from their own website. In fact, there are specific types of things that they don't allow in videos even if they're legal in most places, such as pornography. I wouldn't be surprised if the terms of service explicitly stated that they could remove a video or an entire channel without notice for any or no reason at all. I'd expect that to hold up at least in a U.S. court for two reasons: (1) it's their own website, to do with pretty much as they please; and (2) Google has plenty of money to hire lawyers and lobby for legislative changes, which does, unfortunately, have the effect of making the law more lenient for them. I've heard people complain about KZbin limiting people's right to free speech, but the U.S. Constitution only guarantees that the government won't do that. KZbin isn't even obligated to have a website, much less to host someone's video on it. I don't know if that was where you were coming from, but it's a common enough complaint that some reader will probably think it. I'm also unaware of a legal distinction between a platform and a publisher, but I'm no expert, so it might exist for all I know. If anything, I'd expect the rules for a platform to be looser so that they don't have to vet everything on the site, whereas a publisher is assumed to have done that and agreed to some extent with everything that is accepted for publication. It seems to me that KZbin has in this case just gone with the easier, more profitable option of doing nothing, as we should expect any for-profit company to do, no laws required.

I used to watch a channel called the infographics show and for the longest time and never really had any major issues with their information, that was until they made a video talking about the sultana steamship disaster. I myself have actually heavily researched this topic and I was mindblown by all the errors they made, what pissed me off the most is that they said that the disaster happened because of "government corruption" which not only did they not justify in any way, it's not even true. At no point did government corruption play any part in the sinking of the sultana. After watching that trainwreck I proceeded to fact check pretty much every other video I've watched from them and I could not believe just how bad it was, sometimes it seems like they didn't even research the topic at all and just based them off other youtube videos.
