Its design was based on large, prehistoric frogs, but the English version of its name used the suffix -saur (likely due to the pokemon's somewhat reptilian appearance). Also, in the original Japanese games, its name was "Fushigidane," from fushigi (meaning "strange") and tane (meaning "seed"), its name can also be interpreted as "Mysterious Seed" or as the phrase "Fushigi, da ne?" (meaning "Strange, isn't it?").

Aside from the bombardier beetle, there's another analogy I've heard being suggested. A snake's venom (or a komodo dragon's saliva) can also be described as giving a burning sensation. So the myth of dragons with a lizard- or snake-like body, might also be a potential origin for the dragonfire myth. So... the same could be suggested for Charmander and other fire-pokemons.

2:49 now hold on, it doesn’t necessarily have to discharge through water, if the animal could touch the attacker or prey then it wouldn’t matter that it lives out of water. For a matter of fact if it could jump off the ground, then the fact that air is such a bad conductor of electricity would prove to the shocker’s advantage, this way the electricity is more apt to travel through the victim rather than back through the shockers body to get to the ground (in this case, both meanings of a ‘ground’).

I feel like an animal could evolve to manipulate spring-loaded plants if it were activated like a venus fly trap, since all you'd need to do would have limbs that could reach wherever the plant is (in this case, the back) and activate the plant. Ofc, it would have to be bipedal or an invertebrate, but still. Also, a land-dwelling animal that uses electricity could maybe (I say maybe, since it might require a voltage that's simply way too high for any animal to achieve) work by having skin that can electricute at around the voltage one of those electric shock prank things.
