"miRack - How To Make A Simple Synth - Beginner Friendly Tutorial!"
FEATURING:
I'm very excited about the miRack modular synthesizer app on iPad!
In this video, I show how you can build a very simple 1 Oscillator Synthesizer,
sequence it with a sequencer and keep your notes in key.
We briefly explore some of the sound potential in the "Audible Instruments - Macro Oscillator", which is based on the real-world "Braids" module from "Mutable Instruments".
More *Beginner Friendly* miRack tutorials to come!

Electronisounds Audio Having a wonderful evening here, lost down the Rabbit hole with miRack and a cup of coffee. Followed your steps and got this patch going. Couldn’t resist trying to add an LFO to modulate the Timbre of the OSC. Connected a waveform from the LFO to the OSC Timbre and turned up the Modulation dial on the OSC. Ooohh! That worked, but out of sync with the sequence tempo. Connected the V/Oct from the LFO to the Clock 1 output...and hey! Now the LFO is modulating the Timbre to the clock tempo! Don’t know if that’s what I was supposed to do, but it’s done something that’s behaving as I wanted it to! Lol. This is so awesome, mate, a huge modular playground on iPad, dream come true! I took the Red Pill! Ok...I’m going further in...more coffee needed.... (Edit) Actually, connecting the Clock 1 output to the LFO SCL and tweaking the SCL dial works even better.

Electronisounds Audio Lol. Now added a synced delay, a reverb, and modulating the Colour on the OSC with a different waveform from the LFO. Don’t know what SAM function is for on the BOGAUDIO LFO, but I’m modulating it from CLK2 set to a different ratio. The result is a very nice spacious polyrhythmic arp which is sweeping through a range of Timbres and Colours. No sleep tonight!!! 🤣🤣😲

Great tutorial. I just purchased miRack last night. There's not a lot of "getting started" tutorials on miRack. I think in chat the other day Spider was saying how miRack runs on a 2016 iPad. Well Dean, it took nearly a year, but I can safely say that this has me hooked. Whether it was your modular Sundays, or Ed B’s encouragement, or the fact that my Typhon has been put back to December, but I determined this week to sit down with a tutorial or two and work this out. I’ve found that the time spent on it increases exponentially each day (there’s a limit, surely?), and I’m now at the stage where I’m annoyed at the quality of the delay modules... Next I’ll be tackling the drum module tutorials, in the hope that if I can build something really cool in miRack I won’t need to drop £250+ on a Drumbrute! Thank you.

Your happy faced intro always makes me smile. Love your content! I think something extra that I would have found interesting and super helpful would have been an insight into your process in setting up this video. For example, you mention that you were referring to an image off-screen to help you build this patch. Where did you find that image and what made you choose to use that particular one? I would also be interested to learn how you know which cable goes where? "Left to left and right to right". Yes but why did you choose the white part of the module rather than the grey? Anyone who I have watched misses out these foundation stones when they attempt to pass on some knowledge. For me that means it disappears into the pile of untethered knowledge that could be so much more helpful. I cannot recreate what you do because some of the very first steps in why you do it are missing. Lastly, you are now the proud owner of around 5,000,000HP x 2000,000U of populated Eurorack space. So you have gone from here, a self-confessed novice, to there, a super-geek, in one year! Now, either you are some kind of learning machine or there's something there that you could pass on too! I hope that I have explained myself in a way that is helpful for you without making you feel like I am attacking you or your channel. That is certainly not my intent. Thank you for all the time and effort you spend on this.
@ElectronisoundsAudio
@ElectronisoundsAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Well, yes - I am a learning machine. This is ALL I DO. 🤓 I can't pas on my personal enthusiasm, unrelenting commitment to creating electronic music, learning ethic or attention to detail. This is how I make my living (sound design) ( www.electronisounds.com ) and is *also* my only hobby/passion/interest outside of keeping my wife happy. 😏 I don't even have a car if you get my drift. I rarely leave the house. LOL I've been an electronic music producer and sound designer since 1994, so I had a *lot* of knowledge already going in to Eurorack - which helps immensely. Meaning, I already knew how to make music and sounds, I just didn't know this exact format of working. The image offscreen was just a SCREENSHOT that I made that helped me remember what modules to use and how to route them so I wouldn't forget or do it wrong in the video. With over 500 modules available in MiRack at that time, and being a beginner at modular, I needed cheat notes! 😏 How to know where to touch and what to patch? Like I explain in my videos - I watch a LOT of other people teaching beginning concepts videos, then LEARN from that, and share what I can. (real-world Eurorack videos are 100% relevant and able to be learned from - just seek out the CONCEPTS you want to learn (i.e. triggers, gates, envelopes, filters, routing etc...) and that infortmation translates to a LOT of things in MiRack. If you watch all my Mirack beginner videos in sequence, You might get the answers you seek. I have 17 videos on MiRack here: kzbin.info/aero/PLK5Ai5ysFp2v7YmCDLCHdFRIu4ZKU4G7h However, this world is the DEEPEST RABBIT HOLE THAT EXISTS (!!), and there is no global manual for it all. I personally got into it 3 other times before I really "GOT IT". These are not easy concepts. Welcome to the arena. You will definitely need to seek out way more learning sources to fully understand this type of thing. I would need to make *hundreds* of videos to even scratch the surface of what is actually possible here. 🤓 Look for more videos on the BASICS, and if you stick with it, things start to slowly make sense, the more time you spend learning it. Like I mention in the videos, this cat right here: kzbin.info/door/uWKHSHTHMV_nVSeNH4gYAg is a MUST FOLLOW for beginning concepts to help you get started with all of this. 👍👍

Hey Hey, Grant! I find it pretty confusing and intimidating as well - it's so deep! 😀 👊 I'm using the *large* mixer for routing audio (it's not super important in this first stage, but when we start routing some effects through it to add to our synth(s), and adding more instruments to the session, it starts to work it's magic!) The other little mixer I'm using to connect the amplitude envelope to the oscillator.

I’d pay some close attention to the video at around 4:00 (give or take) regarding LIMITERS and how “absolutely the way to go” they are for the safety of your tympanic membranes. I’ve had some scary times in Garageband working on some subtle dark ambient experiments where I had the volume turned up fairly high already due to low initial gains. Then I started monkeying with new plug-ins to hear their effects and sometimes there were some…SERIOUS unanticipated “effects”!! 🧨⚡️💥🙀😬😵‍💫

Dude, i can’t even tell you how super useful this video has been for me. It instantly kickstarted my understanding of the app so much more and i already turned this synth into a 4 osc full stereo synth with multiple send effects. Damn this is fun and addictive. Is there a good stereo chorus in miRack though that you know of? I don’t know if there are more available than just the two that pop up under the Chorus tag. But i am not impressed by those two at all. I wonder if there is a way to have miRack routed with AUM in such a way that i can use my own AUv3 plugin effects inside AUM working as an external send effect for the mixer inside miRack... hard to explain maybe what i am trying to accomplish.... i am not trying to put my AUv3 plugins on the overal master sound of miRack, but interested in putting them as send effects on the individual mixer channels inside miRack. I doubt there is a module that functions as an interface between AUM and miRack to route such things. shit, i am starting to see why you switched to hardware Eurorack gear. LOL! 🤘😎👍 Hope to catch your live Eurorack stream later today again 😃

BOOM! Great job, Ed! 😀 👊 Unfortunately I'm not super familiar with the chorus modules in Mirack to know which one(s) might be good, sorry! I love your idea of INDIVIDUALLY routing the audio out to AUM to create FX sends! WOW! NICE!!! Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to do this at this time, like you said - we can only put the fx on the entire "master" of what is coming out of MiRack when hosting it in AUM (that I know of !). Nice and clear walkthrough. I guess you could lose the one channel mixer and route the envelope output directly to the main mixer Level CV input for the same effect? Doesn't make much difference here but if you have multiple channels keeping the module count down probably helps. All depends on how quickly a module processes the CV I guess for an accurate envelope.
@ElectronisoundsAudio
@ElectronisoundsAudio 4 жыл бұрын
The one channel mixer I think is needed, it's connecting the amplitude envelope to the oscillator. This is the part that I have the *most trouble* understanding, right now - that specific routing/connection between the Oscillator and the amplitude envelope. 🤔
@MatthewJohnCrittenden
@MatthewJohnCrittenden 4 жыл бұрын
@@ElectronisoundsAudioIt's all a fun learning experience for very little $. As far as I can tell the envelope is just modifying the level so this could be done either in the one channel or main mixer. I will compare the two at some point myself rather than just spout ideas. :)

I had this same question: why the single-channel mixer? Figured since I looked into it and found that it (routing ADSR “out” into mixer’s “level” port) could be done on a “main” mixer without needing the intermediary module, I’d comment here. I figure if we were needing to purchase additional modules this might be pricey, but since this is miRack (ouRack? youRack?) and additional modules & cables don’t cost a penny, you can patch it whatever way makes most sense to you. 👊🥸 Digging this series, Dean. Hoping you won’t abandon miRack tutorials now that you’ve splurged on hardware.
@kyletallon
@kyletallon 2 жыл бұрын
The one channel mixer is being used as a VCA - voltage controlled amplifier. The Envelope from the ADSR module is controlling the level of the mixer, which is amplifying the signal from the oscillator. Each oscillator basically needs an envelope generator and vca so you can control it instead of it just droning on whatever note it’s receiving via v/oct signal.
