This family retreat in northern California, situated on an oak-studded hilltop, is wrapped in a protective shell of standing-seam metal. The house, designed by Studio VARA, stretches east to west along a ridge and is composed of two volumes separated by a breezeway. Its prismatic form is kinked at the center to maximize sunrise views to Mount St. Helena and sunset views to the west. With a structure of prefabricated glue-laminated timber beams and a concrete base, the house features a clear layout that demarcates public and private areas, creating an open and airy space with full-height windows and vertical cedar screens that shade the outdoor living spaces.
